But why - somebody tell me why - is there an opening on the BOTTOM of motorcycle fuel tanks? Who decided _that_ was a good idea? Plenty of room under the speedo for sending unit, wouldn't have to remove tank to service filter - and there wouldn't be an opening on the BOTTOM. Who started this? F'Heaven's sake, why? Okay, had my rant...

(Re: fab) | | There'll be a bit of that form over function thing goin' on and doubtless, and more likely, a matter of cost during the production phase. All bikes should be produced by race engineers ... they like to do things whereby they can be stripped and fettled with minimum effort ... the bikes also!

If you can seal the tank, what difference does it make where you put the hole? You don't gain or lose anything in terms of manufacturing costs, complexity or risk. These bikes are made for ease of manufacture and price point. You ability to work on it is not a consideration.

I just can't wrap my mind around putting an opening in the bottom of a container, least of all a fuel tank. I know it's not new (new to me maybe) and we all take it for granted since it doesn't appear to be problem and hasn't been a problem far as I know. But I can't imagine being the first engineer to suggest it, should think I'd be laughed out of a job.
