There must be some expertise on here about this.
What do you use to capture sound?
What editing suites have people used, and which are the best. gopros free one is very limited.
What frame rates do you use for different shots?
What lens settings are best for what?
Which are the most useful mounts?
Anything else useful to know.
Note to anyone from down under. No it's not for shooting porn. I know how your minds work.

OK but not very helpful. Do you use duck tape, selotape or superglue it to your butt.
What sort of mike works best for that then.
I'm sure I'm going to regret asking this.

H.264, 30fps, FinalCut Pro editing software + a dedicated hard drive.
An external mic with a good wind muff helps audio (recorded w/video). Most action cams have a wide-angle (fisheye) lens at 130-degree or so (2.5mm); covers lots of area but too much distortion for me. I've been using lenses in the 6-8mm range, about 50-degrees, which is close to "normal." Longer lenses act like telephoto/closeup lenses. Don't know about GoPros, but changing lenses is not normally an option for action cams, requires some hardware hacking.
No end to mounts out there..... have fun!

The price dropped when the 4 came out, and it seems good enough for me since I'm a video novice. You can find a ton of information on YouTube. You can find about 400 video tips from MicBergsma alone - Link GOPro also lists tips as well. Just go to their website for information. So far I've just used 1080 @60fps. You will likely find differing opinions about settings, so just play around with it and see what you like best. Good luck!
The weather by me looks great for riding this weekend, so I plan to capture lots of video of the changing leaves.
Enjoy your Go Pro!

I bought a 64gig micro sd card so there should be enough space and I've got a terra bite external drive with not much on it to keep finished stuff on.
I'm getting the impression that a spare battery would be a good investment. The go pro has some different lens settings to change the wideness of the shots which I assume are software driven. I guess it's a case of finding the time to try different settings. and find my way around the camera.
I got an accessory pack of mounts with a case, the body harness works pretty good. It's nice to have options, even if I'll never use some of them.
Thanks for the help.

You'll be going through the same learning curve as me then
I'll have another go this weekend and try some different settings, if I can figure out how to change them. I'm not much good with phones either. Computers are a different thing I can manage them.
We should swap notes

Yes, it's definitely a learning curve for me! I've watched a ton of videos and gotten lots of accessories, now it's time to ride! I must admit, my laptop is a 2008 Mac. So far, I can download and edit videos, but I can't export them. I'm trying to figure out if it's a glitch or my perhaps my old laptop is not compatible with the new technology of the Go Pro.
I also thought about your sound problem. Where are you mounting it? You can do a voice over if you want, but if you want to hear your pipes, you might try mounting it closer to them. Also, are you using the skeleton back door? That will allow for more sound.

It picked up the engine OK, but I'd have liked to record my first impressions of my new bike as I went along. I still have the raw footage so I can re-edit when I get the editing software I have ordered and look at adding a voice over then.
I wanted to leave the original sound track running under the speeded up sections as the sound is muted if you speed up the video, fading up and down original sound, music and voice over as appropriate. However, the gopro software couldn't handle anything like that. You can't insert video just add a new section which cuts the sound track.
I guess I was expecting too much for something that comes free. I've did a bit of video editing at university, did a media studies degree so I have an idea on what I want to achieve. That was back in the early 90s when it was all tapes, it should be a lot easier with a decent editor now.
What are you using to edit yours? Doesn't apple supply video editing software on macs?

BTW: iMovie edits and exports video, QuickTime also has export options.

Seemed to work OK. I have tried an external mic but it is hopeless on the bike so I put music on all my youtube videos - I guess if people don't like the music track they can hit mute. You just have to experiment - I have made my own mounts for different views when surfing and always use rubber bicycle tube etc as a cushion on the bike to stop the vibration a little. Consider things like leaving the camera mounted on the road instead of on you and doing a run towards then a run past with the camera the other way. Even time lapse is cool on the bike when riding through the city etc.. Be prepared to do heaps of editing. I use iMovie on my mac and it is really easy and basic. Have a look at my most recent video for some ideas of different angles. Cheers, Dan Link

A Bob Dylan track was cited as a copyright infringement on the one I posted, so no sounds which kinda made it look silly. Tom Petty must be happy for us to advertise his music though as nothing was said about that. There's a guy with an LT, on the RAT site, posted some vlogs and he got a decent sound on a mike. So I guess it's possible with the right mike and the right placement.
I like the different angles. It tells a good story and adds interest, your basic TV manipulation trick of lying about time.
Vibration damping, I'd thought about that when I got the bar mount. I'd have to nick a bike to get an inner tube, and I can't run fast enough to get away. But yea some sort of robber/foam.
This new software seems to have the flexibility to do give a lot more control on what you put out. When I get time I'll have a proper play with it and see what I can come up with.
Thanks for all the suggestions though. I was interested to find out what people found useful, saves me finding out the hard way.
Don't suppose I'll ever be a George Lucas but then again he doesn't ride a Thunderbird

| Posted : 07 Nov 2014 - 03:47 Post title : Re: How do you get the best out of videos (Re: Steve) | | I've managed decent audio using an external mic with a muff - my tailcam gets audio because the pipes are right there - but at some point wind noise will overcome everything, so after 20mph or thereabouts all you get is noise.
I've made a bunch of solid mounts, stainless and aluminum, no rubber anywhere, and get excellent results. Front cams mount on handlebar near LH grip and on riser, tailcam on luggage rack, mounts that clamp on footboards, even one that hangs from saddlebag. Vibration has not been a problem at all, mainly because the T-Bird is just that smooth.
Having said that, there is a phenomenon known as "CMOS wobble" that is unavoidable. It has to do with the way CMOS ('sea-moss') chips fill video frames; a given harmonic frequency from the motor will cause waves, as though underwater, and the only way to avoid it is to avoid multiples of that specific engine rpm. Image stabilization helps, but it can't touch CMOS wobble.

There IS something that can be done about the "jello effect" with the GoPro. It is a "trick" used in the film industry. Putting a Neutral Density filter in front of the lens "tricks" the GoPro into slowing down the shutter rate, thereby reducing the "wobble." Yes, the pictures will be a little less crisp (softer) looking, but you should only notice this when grabbing single-frame stills from the video.
Make sure that you know the difference between FRAME rate and SHUTTER rate. You can still have 1920x1080 video at 60 FPS (frames per second) but with a slower SHUTTER rate. The shutter rate decides how much light gets into the camera with each picture/frame. The FRAME rate is how MANY pictures to take each second.
I use an ND Filter with a rating of 6. This keeps good light control, adds color depth, and slows the shutter just enough to get smooth footage at 65+ mph highway speeds.
Of course, a good, solid mount helps, too!
Cheers!
