OK, I've seen them in the flesh, and every photo I see of them, makes me wonder what was going through the head of the designer that came up with those God-aweful sissybar and backrest pad! Do they think a Thunderbird owner is in need of overly chunky, fat, shapeless, over-sized bits of tubing and fake leather sitting on the back of their otherwise beautifully sculpted machine? This isn't a behemoth like a Rocket III that can get away with that sort of over-zealous styling. That sissybar, apart from it being QR, is terrible. And the fact that it pushes any bags a further inch (or more?) away from the bike, is even worse.

So, what other options are there?

There is the DIY method:

Link grown sissy bar brackets)&InSkin=BlackKnight#NewPost

But is anyone aware of a commercial product that is svelt and stylish enough to put on our lovely bikes? :)

I've looked far and wide for something aftermarket but to no avail. Probably another year or so before we see much. I gave up and ordered the QR sissybar and pad on Friday. Looks like it will probably be at least a couple months before I get it (which I think is ridiculous).

I felt the same way and over the top price made it worse. Thats why I made my own, I have done a thousand miles with mrs1600 as pilliion and no probs. They are black at the mo but I have some more work to do - rack fitting and bag bars etc. I shall then consider the finish - but will probs go with matching blue. Mine are fitted with spring clips (hidden) and utilise the back two fender fittings with much smaller 'bobbins' than the Triumph ones. It comes off in secs.

Found these others .They looked a bit bland to me and not chunky enough.

Agreed. How can they release a bike that is so popular but not have anticipated demand for a Sissybar???

Good job finding something that fits the Bird, but agreed, those don't do it for me, either.

Do you have your DIY job drawn up in any sort of detail, like CAD, or PDF? I think my only option is the get some made, too. If I can get some dimensions from you that I could pass onto the metal working dude, that would be great. :)

I'm thinking polished stainless, though, so no need for chroming or painting. :)

Cheers,

I have a cad drawing of the flat component I can send you. The actual bar and pad is off e-bay so you would have to get one and have the brackets laser/plasma cut and bend them to suite the width of the 'down bars' and drill any holes needed. The bobbins are turned from st/st which I did myself (can provide drawing). The spring clip i made up as I went along and never produced a drawing for. If you have a basic idea of fabbing and metally type work you should be able to work the rest out from my designs on the cad drawing. The only reason mine were not from st/st is that I f*cked about that much that I just used the samples that I got cut out and bent up. (st/st ones next winter). Is dxf. ok for drawing format - most water/plasmer/laser dudes should be able to get it off that.

I waited more than two months for mine. Ridiculous! Even more so considering I've seen at least three new SE models sitting at dealers with the kits installed. Nice way to take care of customers Triumph.

Hopefully you'll be able to cobble something nice together.

That would be perfect. The company I work for has a supplier that works with stainless and does laser cutting for us, and also do rolling/bending to our specs.

I'll have to do a search on eBay for a decent looking backrest. I think I ruined mine by shearing a bolt off in one of the mounting holes. Don't ask. :(

Could you send the DXF files to: thunderbird [at] mark [dot] jelic [dot] com [dot] au

Thanks! :)

I'll put up pics of anything I make up.

In the new catalogue from Highway Hawk they make notice of the wide sissy bars (height 400mm from fender) fits the TB. Code 526-1030.
Also available with a luggage rack (525-003).
I can't find them on there website but I've never found anything there. There site is just crap.

Well at least things are starting to become available from all the regulars. Not a big fan of Highway Hawk styling, but it's an option!

Hmm.. A little agricultural for my liking, but I like the grab rail. :)
I'll have to ask the Mrs if she wants one on the thing I design. Lord knows she needs it! ;-)

Isn't it funny how no-one (even in the news/media) dares to try to pronounce the name of it, simple calling it "That Icelandic Volcano" is all they try. :)

I think is sounds something like "Mount Iprefervanilayoghurt"

Have they made it to suit the long haul seats cos they are a tad bigger ? My first brackets went in the bin cos I changed seats.
