Needed to be inside the bird today to sort my battery. Decided to take of the OEM sissy bar and rack. First time I've ever done that .... They weigh a freakin' ton. Got me thinking .... bike looks real pretty without that stuff so I'm gonna try and find a nice comfy single seat to interchange with my long haul duo. Market seems limited here in England. Do I buy a long haul single from Triumph or get a second hand stock seat and get it custom fettled. I'd like it with a big padded rear bolster but not sure you could do that with a stock seat pan. I'm assuming that the long haul has a different platform from the stock unit.

I like the Triumph single tour seat. 45000 miles on it now and no probs. You could start with that and then get it modded if you are not happy. you could of course just get the stocker sorted.

try this guy. - Les Wood seatman@btconnect.com
he will be padding out my pillion seat this winter.

Thanks mat1600. That's the kind of info I'm after. I will likely go the long haul single seat route and as you say I may be able to get it reconstructed into a full on custom seat if necessary. If that were the case I'd like it to be very different. My bike is red white and blue ... it'd stand a tan coloured seat or something.

For those in the US of A, Seth Laam does a real nice job for Thunderbirds.

I took my stock seat/pan to a local upholstery guy a couple of weeks ago, and he said he would add a layer of padding to make it more comfortable, build up the back so it's at the same height as the pillion would have made it (almost like a long haul seat) and cover it in leather for about $250US.
One day, I may do that, just for kicks, but ultimately I chose to go with the much more expensive Mustang Vintage seat.
My only concern was that it's easy to get something made to a certain size spec. But trying to get something made by someone that is "more comfortable on a long ride" is a very subjective thing.
At my age now, the seat is of critical importance so I thought I'd go with the guys whom I KNOW, know what the hell they are doing.
If it's for short rides, it's obviously not as critical, but for long rides, even as a single, I needed to make sure.

I have placed my order for the mustang seat and pillion. I like the corbins but their pillion pad is not as nice as the mustangs and no where near as (i hope) comfy for the passenger wich i will have more often on this bike and remove when not. The corbins are a great seat, but it took me a couple years of sorting out the rear height by adjusting the legs of the seat a little at a time until it was just right. They have a tendancy to out you low and back in the saddle, with an inseam of 30" that can be a challange. And for the very same reason i think the mustang will work out good for me, appreantly moves you forward a wee bit, i am ok with that, i hope down a bit though becasue i do feel that the OEM sits you up a bit high. Regardless it will be better.

Decided to go the new OEM unit route. Got a brand new one off ebay for ??30. If it's not comfy enough as is I'll get it reworked. Also bought one of those li'l medallion things to clean up the rear mudguard. Once I've put all my new bits on I'm hoping this will have the look I was wanting from the start. The next two days look like they maybe relatively warm and dry so I'll prolly get motivated and start the transformation.

Swagger you'll not be disappointed with Matt's recommended upholsterer, I took a long haul dual seat to him end of last year and he added 2 gel pads and an extra inch of padding on the passenger pad ( for Mrs G's comfort). He made a cracking job and I thought it was a reasonable price, he's also a biker and knows what he's talking about.
