This weekend my wife and I went to a monthly ride in to Cassoday, Kansas...We have been a couple of times and one of the things that gets a large crowd is the Dyno testing exhibition....this is usually overrun with hopped up Harley's......I walked by and sitting next in line to get was a blue and white BB Thunderbird!!
It was not getting much attention because right behind it was a flashy, screaming eagle Harley....but when the Bird got strapped in and after some confusion about where the plug wires were so the torque could be calculated (The Harley guys never could find them) they started the test.....it sounded great, completely different than the popping and coughing of the Harleys prior to it.....

When they were done the announcer said how disappointed he was that they could not get a torque figure because the bird was putting out 89 hp at the rear wheel and a top speed of 149mph.....and he REALLY would have loved to have seen what kind of torque it was putting out because it was about to pull itself out of its tie downs...then the Bird got a lot more attention!!
The best part of the story is that the screaming eagle Harley drawing so much attention was putting out 87 hp (2 less than the Thunderbird)... I would have loved to see the face of the HD owner that spent who knows how many thousands of dollars only to have his moment of glory fade away.

Side note... the TB run got people talking about the Rocket III tested earlier...it apparently had some extra goodies on it because they said it was putting out about 153 HP at the rear wheel and then added that they couldn't remember the torque figures but it was just a ridiculous amount....and said it would just be silly for the street.

Interesting to see this from another perspective.... that's Argyle, he posted about this over at the TriumphDayCare.net... er rat ... (I'm being catty, don't mind me)

Here is his sheet

HooRad made a guestimate at torque..

OK, I think we can get a rough idea of the torque. I take it this dyno run was done with the bird in 6th gear? If we first of all assume that the bird does approximately 75 mph in 6th gear at 3000 RPM (mine does). Then we take the RPM at which the bird has max torque to be approximately 2750 rpm (the 1600 does, anyway - is the 1700 any different?) and we can approximate which speed that the bird had max torque. This is 68.75 mph, according to my calculations. Then using the equation relating horsepower and torque T=(5252*Power)/RMP and plug in 2750 and the approximate horsepower generated at 68.75 mph (I estimated 57 HP according to the graph) we get 109 ft.lb of torque. That is in line with expected max torque with some loss of efficiency due to measurement of power at the wheel. If there is, in fact, about 12% loss, then the measurement at the wheel would be about 123 ft.lbs. If assuming 10% loss, then about 120 ft.lb. It that clear?

Not bad figures and I should be just above that myself. Can't wait to get the tuneboy and break 100 rwhp

That's a good number and about right compared to what Triumph states it would put out. I am waiting to fully break mine in and then will dyno mine.

I just loved that everyone was so excited about HD's getting HP ratings from 59 to 67 and then here comes the Thunderbird which was getting ignored by people...until it blew away everyone I saw being tested.

almost brought a tear to my eye
