| Posted : 01 May 2010 - 01:43 Post title : Yet another Badge swap | | Well, I finally did it. Found the badge style I want (for now at least). These are from the Rocket III Roadster and as pricey as any of the Triumph badges.
Nothing fancy, just a straight forward Triumph logo, just like I wanted. Now the curve wasn't right. They were much deeper and as the end of the badge (or front depending on which side) hits the front break of the tank and needs to be molded quite a bit to get it to fit.
By the time I got the badges on it was getting on towards dark so the pics aren't great but I thought I'd share nonetheless.
I'll try and get better ones later but as I have to run down to Georgia in the morning to pick up my son (he ships off to Kuwait on Tuesday and this is our last chance to see him for a year) This weekend is all but shot for spending any time with the bike.
As for how I affixed them, I heated them with hair dryer (face side) while applying pressure to them to flatten the main arc once on the bike I used the padded handle of some pliers to hold pressure on the end while I heated the end of the badge, coaxing it into shape, taking the heat away and holding it place. I'd just listen as I pulled back from the badge to see if I heard any pulling away of the adhesive. Once all was quiet on the badge front I moved to the next one.
I never liked the original badges, but I will say this. They are pretty hefty things. Solid and heavy. Hey, that just made me think... I'll have to weigh them.. I just shaved some more weight off the bike.
Anywho, there ya go. Hope you like em (I do)

But i must admit, and i don't know how it happened, but i think i actually prefer the stock ones over any of them. It seems to fit the bike best to my eye, tho i'm sure it's just my being used to it. At first i wanted different badges, and i'm surprised how i changed how i feel about that. So now i think i'll be sticking with the stockers. I do like those a lot tho thatch. Bike is looking good...looks mean.

Daz, I'm tempted to think it's 'getting used to it' simply because each time I've made a mod it's taken me a bit to like it. When I picked up the bike I liked it, now that I've ridden it as much as I have I love it and while when it was new I easily picked at what I didn't like it becomes harder the longer I've had it as those bits are all part of the bike I love. Things like the bars that I now absolutely love were first met with indecision because it changed the look of the bike so much.
Interesting note about that. I was at the dealership the other day talking to one of folks there about my bike and this guy is looking sideways at the bike, slowly comes over and says to the dealer 'You got one of those in there?' to which the reply came 'Yeah, we've got three, it's a Thunderbird' he just kind of shook his head, smiled and said 'They don't look like that. That's badass'.
Kinda made my day.

Well, like i said it looks mean. I think thats mainly a product of the bars, as they change the bikes look dramatically and really is the only change you've done so far that alters the lines to any serious degree. I have the T bars and i was pleasantly surprised at how they changed the bike's look. Yours change it even more due to how drastic a change they are. I think knowing what you like and having owned a speedmaster myself, the next logical stop for you to give it the full on hot rod treatment would be to have the side covers all blacked out with the same textured finish on the engine just like the speedmaster. That would be a drastic change and i think make it look awesome. I like that look myself, tho i also like chrome and prefer it for it's ease of maintenance. (funny...others thing the opposite, but to me it's the easiest thing to clean) Otherwise I'd love that look again. But i must say the speedy was far harder to keep looking new with the fully blacked out engine.

| Posted : 03 May 2010 - 14:37 Post title : Re: Yet another Badge swap (Re: OKCTBird) | | Thanks for the kind words. I do like them a lot. Give the bike a bit more old school feel which is where I'm going with things. I'm going to skip the engine blackout at this point as I don't like things to be too mono-chromatic. At the point that chrome starts to look worse then I might do that. Next up is cleaning up the controls, swapping out the grips, doing a seat recover and going with pod filters.
The badges were the going rate for all Triumph badges it seems, about $32 a side. Pricey for what they are but they do have a pretty big impact on things so ultimately they are worth it to the final look.
As for taking them off, it was the tried and true Goo-Gone and fishing line that did the trick. The adhesive on the original badges is pretty stout. Dental floss wouldn't do it for these. I just slid the fishing line behind the badge then pulled it slightly towards the badge and sawed back and forth... cutting it mainly against the badge not the tank. The left over adhesive on the tank was easy to clean off by rolling it off with my fingers then cleaning up with the goo-gone.
I just had to get some better pics, not that these show anything more, just don't like the grainy dark ones.
Oh, and also, thanks for the comments on my son. We are very proud of him. He's come a long way in the last year and has really become a man. We'll miss him of course but glad to see him getting on with his life and making us proud. There's something special about buying your son a beer and just talking as friends.

however the T just seems to be slightly on a rh tilt ( first pics ) how easy would it be to manipulate the letter T ?

So.... Thatch, you have swapped for my second favorite badge! I too had looked at the ones you chose, and was torn between the ones I have now and these.
