OK so there's been some updates on my side regarding the 'conversion' of the LT seat onto my standard Thunderbird seat pan. And to keep things together - I've quoted from older posts and placed them all here.

----------------------------------------------------------------/ QUOTES /-----------------------------------------------------------------

Well as soon as I had seen the photographs of the newer generation 'Birds, I just knew I had to have the:
- Seat
- Tank Badge

And I'm also contemplating the new 'lower' exhausts - as they could fit under the saddle bags better... But Triumph will have to do a TOR's version of the LT exhaust if I'm going to get them!

So - for those of you that haven't seen it yet - here is what the 'Underbelly' of the LT seat looks like ~ albeit without the quick-release mechanism installed:

Does it fit?
I hear you ask...

NO.
Not by a long way!

Here's a direct comparison:

It is too be noted, that the rubber 'stoppers' have been removed from the LT seat - as we had tried to fit it previously!

But it didn't help!

But it sure does look great in my opinion.

There's a massive gap at the back of the seat - if it HAD fitted...

Here's another comparison:

So the next step is to have the seat specialist come in and transfer the new seat onto the standard Thunderbird seat pan - naturally with some filling in here and there!
I'll report back when I know more (Some time in the next couple of weeks).

I don't think the seat fits the 1st gen. Bird.

Correct - which is why the seat specialist is now going to move the LT seat (foam and cover) onto a 1st generation seat pan - naturally with some work involved (filling in and adapting).

Normally there wouldn't be a gap - PROVIDED you could get the front 'lip' to go under the tank pivot point.

What stops this is the fact that the newer seat is MUCH more thinner up front and also wraps around more. This then prevents you from 'dropping' the seat down and slipping the 'lip' under the tanks' pivot point.

A Triumph Dealer said one badge will sell for about $42.00 (+ tax).

They sure are solid! I don't know the price just yet - but will find out later - I'm sure!

Sorry Birdy, I was on the I phone and didn't see your entire post before I replied
Very good job on the comparisons

No worries - and here a little thing I did to try and help me understand what the differences are exactly.
(I don't know if it helps...)

And here's the update....

The Sattler - Kress GmbH - came around to my hander - Moto91 - yesterday evening to talk with me and find out:
- how I rode the bike,
- what was my expectations of a seat,
- what I liked,
- what's my weight,
etc.

It was a good talk and very informative (I'm sure his hourly rate will be hidden in the final bill ).

He also brought along the 'work in progress' to talk things over:

Left: Standard Thunderbird & STORM seat pan | Right: LT & COMMANDER seat pan

The underside of the form showing where some of the foam had to be cut away due to the shallower curve of the standard seat pan:

Background: LT & COMMANDER seat pan | Foreground Standard & STORM seat pan

And here some general photos:

The foam that you see in the photos above is the STANDARD foam that you get with the LT & COMMANDER seat!
Basically you have a softer thinner layer of foam over the harder foam that we know from the standard & STORM seats.

I have asked for the firmness of the standard seat, as I find the softer seats not to my liking. On top of that the sattler will add a thin layer of the so called 'medical foam' (the red stuff you see in the photo above). This is firm and has a memory effect. They say it's better than gel as it doesn't become boiling hot like the gel does when left it the direct sun light!

I'll have to wait and see.....

Talking about waiting - the guy said it'll be ready next Thursday!

Looking good Lee. You've put a fair bit of effort into sorting that out, I'll maybe get a look at it if I head over that way sometime this year. Don't know which bike I'll take though, the Thunderbird would be best for the run down but the Street would be the thing for the alpine passes .

I won't believe it until it has been officially denied.

Hi there

After a Seat test at the Swissbike show where I first sat on the new LT, it's quite a difference from this plank to the LT-seat.
Let's find out if it'll work and -last but not least- what it'll coasts..
Cheers!

I still can't get past that Tank to Yoke gap. The overlay picture really brings that out. I like the pipes, tank badges and rear tin coming down further in the back. Wouldn't sell my now very comfy, functional, powerhouse SE for the LT.

Very interesting project this.I just changed my Thunderbird for a Commander. The seat alone was worth it.I personally find the Commander better in all respects. It is heavier, but I find it easier to control.Balance seems better. The handlebars are what I was trying to do to my Tbird. The quality is better all round.Handling is great and much more comfortable. That is just my opinion.I guess many will beg to differ. It,s 43 degrees celcius here today.Going to my works Xmas party tonight.Staying in an acond room with a pool on the roof.Believe it or not I would love to be riding my Commander. Cheers and Merry Xmas to all.
