| Posted : 14 Jan 2014 - 04:13 Post title : Crash damage and parts | | Thought I would let a few know my experiences during and after a fall from the 2013 Storm...
Firstly - bark, broken finger, two ribs, fractured hip, dislocated both thumbs, torn rotator cuff right arm, but VERY happy with the outcome.
Bike slapped me down on right side, tank crushed right front, indicator, brake pedal bent back, and footpeg ground way way down, right exhaust badly scraped, Kuryakyn Bag scuffed (but remarkably held rack and back rest off ground), right headlight smashed and surround ground down, brake lever ball ground down, handlebars only very slightly bent, front guard scraped, right side engine case scratched slightly, but peg and lever bracket, although bent, saved a lot of damage.
Bike stayed on my leg part way, and then slid about 50 metres on road and ten metres off. Great news - didnt flip - stayed on right side and slid. Bike survived what would have written off many bikes, with - wait for it.... |$2000 in parts (not counting the riding gear listed below...) For an off at slightly illegal speeds (130-140), I am VERY happy...
Now the accessories thread:
I had fitted EBC HH Sintered pads to the front, after the originals lasted 34,000 Kilometres (See, I dont overuse the brakes...). On the day, my girl was not with me and I admit we had been traveling as a group in a quite spirited fashion for more than an hour, when on a long tightening right hander, a number of things went wrong at once...
1. I was at full lean without scraping. 2. As I moved my right foot to adjust my bum position mid corner my foot touched the brake 3. The road had a wide section of oiled bitumen just as I rode over the very slight crest, the back brake momentarily chirped from my foot activity (I hardly ever touch the back brakes but have huge feet) 4. I had a hand full of controlled front brake already, but the instant the back chirped, the bike dug in, hit the peg hard, and the front locked instantly and slammed me down, we rode together arm in arm for the first 30 yards.
The fellow who was behind me immediately came to my aid, but I stood up and was mostly unaware of the damage to me... as we went over to pick up the Bird, Andy pointed to the front and said "Shit man look at your brakes!" Basically - they were just off glowing, they were still smoking hot and the disks were now quite blue. Ok, two mistakes at once there - too hard for heavy bike for too long, and maybe wrong selection of pads for that disk... (I had for maybe 20 minutes been behind a couple of middling skill sports bike riders and had to brake hard a few times as they baulked repeatedly at their corner entry speeds, thus i think giving my brakes too hard a time...I have learnt..)
Now my Triumph riding gear. All I can say - is thank the motorcycling gods I wear all full gear, including an armored leather Triumph jacket, armored Triumph gloves, kevlar jeans (the best), good riding boots and a top line helmet.
Basically when I smacked down, the bike was grinding my right leg into the ground, my head and shoulder and right arm hit the ground very hard, and I slid along after on my face, literally, after parting company with the bike, and my left arm was under my chest with the knuckles grinding on the road. All of the impact points on all the gear worked perfectly (although destroyed by their use), and looking particularly at my gloves and the armor on right arm, the gloves and jacket saved me an absolute world of hurt.
Likewise the full face helmet. I own an open face, but rarely wear it - thank the gods for that - on the day...or I would have had no face left.
I am aware of the subtleties of fate, and of course would not have been going hard if I had open face, no gloves and vented textile jacket on, - but even so - off in oil at 100kph.....so much hurt could have been mine even just cruising...
So - bottom line - happy as a pig in mud with my Triumph gear, Arai helmet and my Mack boots - also VERY happy with the robust design of the brackets and bars etc on the Storm... and thank my luck that it didn't flip... etc etc
Now the aftermath... more story...
I have for 30 years self insured my bikes, whi8ch is to say that I consciously weighed up the cost of insuring multiple bikes over multiple years versus the likelihood of crashes fire or theft, and decided that it was not worth it - instead I saved the money, and as at today, I would write off six bikes i a row and still be well in front.... so no lectures please.... I am happy with my choices.
Getting quotes for the bike damage, the right pipe was $400 from the aftermarket mob I bought it from, and I got two quotes for the other parts, one from the shop I purchased three Triumphs from over three years, and one from a newer company that was started from the staff of the aforementioned supplier. I have in the past for my Hayabusa had to get a new tank (original dies to unleaded cancer), and it was $1540 from Japan, so I expected pain with the Trumpy tank...
The issue is, one quote was $1664 PLUS $85 for right badge, PLUS $80 for left badge, while the other quote (from newer company) was $640 INCLUDING badges
All the other parts were in line only a dollar here or there different. Total $1647 for the cheaper set...
Now I thought to myself one of two things possible, a third remote... 1. Mistake, and when they call me in to collect will go ah shite man sorry its actually $1640 we left off the one... (I had them confirm in wrting by text message, and when I paid deposit for parts - so had ample proof they quoted me $640) 2. Its a second hand tank or something they had that made it easy to sell at whacky price. or 3. It was right, and the first shop are thieves (which they are renowned for on forums)
Well, the parts were ordered, service was great, arrived in two working days, I go to pcik them up, invoice is already written, and they take my cash without a bad word - they are happy and I am happy.. (VERY HAPPY)
So bottom line two Triumph dealerships separated by say 25 miles, differ by 185% in price!!!!!
Does this scare you? It does me...... but I am happy that I checked the dealership wjhere I had already spend $50k....
So, got away ok body wise (sore still), and gear needs replacing, but the bike repairs - wow was I happy with how little damage, how well the bike performewd, and how cheap the repairs.
To do list: Getting aftermarket disks from Metal Gear (here in Brisbane for $165 each, and using their pads at $32.50 a set...
End story

Yes, I am based near Brisbane. I bought the bike from Team Moto Virginia, because I trusted the bloke who was at that time working there and has since left. I bought my spares from Olivers at Moorooka, having dealt with them on a few things. (Although I am having trouble getting the black locking ring for the headlight, having paid $288 for the inner and outer only to find the lock ring is not part of either kit - and they are having trouble finding the part number.. that may be just an aberration though and not too stressful.
Thanks for the best wishes.

I too pick and choose between self insure and insure on house, car, boat, bike and health, but at a minimum I get third party insurance to protect others. I won't knowingly ride with people who have no insurance.

I was behind my mate Bluenose when he parted company with his storm. He wasn't going as fast as you were but his bike caught the verge and flipped. He got up in one piece, and with the aid of two passers by, we were able to lift the bike out of the ditch and he managed to ride the Storm home (about 7 miles). It was later written off. Ivan was also wearing Triumph gear and came out of it with no missing skin.
Note - he too slipped on the bare bitumen strip of death.
Hope your back up and running soon.

I emailed Olivers at Moorooka thinking that the prices you paid for the tank etc would be cheaper to buy new tank and guards instead of painting the bird subsequently allowing 2 different paint schemes to interchange. Anyway old mate rang today and quoted me the 1600 price for the tank. The side panels were about 400 a piece and the rear guard was over 1000. Dunno how you got the tank for the price you did All up brand new panels for the bird was over 4K
