Is it just me (changing from a jap smoothy) or do these engines tick and knock a bit. In have what is like a top end knock when on throttle, that bit where you have got to the revs you need to change then hold it at that for a second or two then change. It seems to have an engine knock at that point. Dealer man said nothing to worry about - its normal - he didn,t even listen to it. He also said the injectors do tend to sound a bit ticky on these. Do i ignore or explore. The knock has not got worse.

There is a bit of top end noise on Triumphs. I'm not sure how many miles you have on yours but they do tend to be a bit noisier when new. They settle in a bit as they break in though. Hard to say if that's all your's is or not as we obviously can't hear your bike but from what you describe it sounds normal.

Got 4500 miles on. I never noticed it before , but I ride more now with open face so I hear a lot more .

Well that could be it... a full face will take out a lot of the higher pitched noises and just let the rumble through... However, that's quite a few miles to have new noises showing up, but sounds like you don't have a good baseline to judge from. I try and start my bike without helmet so I can listen to the motor, hear anything that might be amiss. I just let it warm up while I'm putting on my gear. You might start doing that so you have a more solid baseline to judge what might be going on.

Also, on the jap bikes you were on, were they air or water cooled? The engine noise is quite a bit different between the two types.

I try to listen when hot, ou tagain this afternoon and there is a definate rattle but only at certain revs, just sounds like something is loose inside.

Meeting up with Bluenose next week so will have a compare.

That will be good. I've yet to be next to another running bird. It would occasionally be nice to have something to compare to for a number of reasons.

Good luck, hope it's nothing

mat - may seem odd but you could try getting a long screwdriver and placing one end where you think the knock comes from and the other end against your ear, the driver should emphasise any sounds

best done when you are not riding

Certainly no harm in giving that a go. Thanks for the advise about not doing it while riding I dont think the rattle would have mattered if I had done

Personally, I think the Triumph twins "rattle", especially compared to a rice-burner. I really noticed the noises when I add my wind screen - it reflects noises back that I didn't used to hear. I suspect a helmet change would do the same thing.

To me, it's just a part of owning a parallel twin.

Well I went to the dealer with my rattle today and he listened and rode and took it into the workshop and then came out.' Nothing untoward' he said 'bit of a noise somewhere, but nothing to worry about. Its a twin 1600 and it will have noises'. Put it down to me having open face helmet since it got warmer - just hearing more. But as a bonus he said my Bird had a lot more pull than their demo with the same kit fitted - wonder if this is anything to do with it being a Hinkley owned bike before I got it.
