Looks to me like a cross between a cafe racer, a cruiser, and a naked bike. Not really sure what I think of it.

To help celebrate 90 years of BMW motorcycles, the Bavarian manufacturer unveiled Tuesday its new R nineT classic roadster at the BMW Museum in Munich.

The R nineT was designed to celebrate nine decades of BMW motorcycles, a period that begin with the R32 in 1923.

The BMW R nineT, which has been created to mark "90 years of BMW Motorrad", radiates purism and power in undisguised form. It skillfully blends the boxer engine's rugged character and the design traits of various motorcycle eras with cutting-edge technology and a modular concept that offers the rider maximum scope for personalization.

I sure as heck know I don't like this configuration of their "modular concept":

Frankly, I'd like to see them bring back the 1200 C in some fashion. Clean up the look a bit, maybe punch the ccs up to 1600 to match the TBird's.

Only modern BMW that I'd remotely consider buying. I love all the configurations and it shows that BMW don't have to be 'uptight stick up their ass' designers alllllll the time. If I was in a position to buy, I'd certainly consider that.

The 1200c? .... oh no, that's definetely back in the USUTA mindset, the poster child for 'fugly european cruisers'

Just one thing, it's still a BMW

The only thing to like is the fact it has too wheels and perhaps the cafe seat. Otherwise taken a massive beating from the fugly stick!

Boxers are great fun and I do like the new look with the exception of the cruiser.

Ironically it was designed by an American.

I actually quite liked the lines. A brave departure from the norm.
I have ridden one extensively (although it was not mine) and liked it's handling and some other characteristics.

The one in the 2nd pic reminds me of that modern honda four they unveiled a couple years ago, which by the way as far as i know never made it to market, at least not here in the states. really don't like bikes with pipes on one side tho. I'd like it a lot more with pipes on both sides. Never understood the thinking behind that when it ruins symmetry.

Once upon a time I had an R90/6 and it was a great bike. This bike looks like what would happen if a mama Ducati Monster and daddy Bmw Rockster had a one night stand. I like it and can't wait to give it a go.

Looks as though that design was then subjected to the BMW boardroom, design by committee if ever I saw it. Cruisers are just one of those segments that non-American companies seem to just struggle with. The Japanese early cruisers were just embarrassments, the modern ones are just an exercise in blind aping of Harley's offerings or tragic plastic wheelbarrows. The Europeans however have typically just had no clue. They seems to have (rightfully) avoided just copying an HD design but the general concept of what a cruiser even is, or why people are attracted to them seems as foreign to them as eating a hamburger with your hands is to Germans. The tbird is one of the few exceptions to that. Guzzi also did an admirable job of modernizing their california in such a way that the old quirky design was updated to be some sort of mid-point between the old bike and current cruiser offerings. For what ever reason the blinders are beginning to come off and a few new interesting cruisers are coming out (don't mention the Diavel, love the bike but it's not remotely a cruiser in any way shape or form) The old 1200c though was still in the 'what the hell is a cruiser' days though and regardless of how good of a bike it might of been it was a function over form exercise that never appealed to me or cruiser owners in general. Now, call it a standard, adjust it a bit and quit playing at it being a cruiser and perhaps it might of been better accepted.....

who am I kidding, Americans don't ride standards. (thankfully that is slowly changing as well)

I dunno ... I quite liked it. Well, except for the handlebars on the standard model (the one pictured above is not - I think that was the Avantgarde or Phoenix or something - lower bars) and the jugs hanging out the sides looked a bit weird for a cruiser.
If I recall correctly, a buffalo was used within the design concept. Looking at the bike from certain angles (the tank area), I remember seeing where they were coming from. It didn't appeal to the typical cruiser owner - kinda a tiny class of it's own.
I completely agree about the Japs copying the HDs ... booooring!
And yeah ... the Guzzis of old were indeed very quirky (but boy did they handle). You are right the latest California is a huge improvement (haven't ridden one though).

This was the standard R1200C model:

the 'posers' are all custom bike builders and the 'just happens' was a planned unveiling that they specifically came there for as indicated by the conversations leading up to it.

It looks like a decent bike and without doubt it will be. But I think the only 'motorcycle soul' was in the bunch that turned up to ride them. The rest of the workings will have been on a PC in a sterile glass clad office.

I have never really come across a BMW product with 'soul'. They have always been a spot on design, functionality based and do exactly what it says on the box. Can't knock 'em for it, but like their cars, they don't quite do it for me.

It looks good without the tail on, but unridable on the road without a license plate.

Yep, most of those guys are heavyweights in the industry. Wouldn't dare call them posers.

I don't know Mat, out of 40 odd bikes in my stable over the years (of which 3 were BMW's - 2 are still there) I don't feel the same way. I just consider them a different love affair.
"Souless" I would probably attribute to a few of the Japanese contraptions I had.

The definition of a motorcycle, as I learned a long time ago, is that it is "A FEELING BETWEEN MAN AND MACHINE" a definition that I happen to agree with !!! Whadaya think??? Dave!!!

I agree Dave.
It is the balance and interaction between man and machine. One that to me doesn't exist with a car.
I get no enjoyment from driving and for 90% of time will be two wheels first.
I arrive home from work with no pent up stresses through the day.

What's more any enjoyment that can be had in a car is being gradually eroded through technology removing the need for skill.
In many ways the future car will be an autonomous vehicle communicating to other vehicles and surroundings where the driver is purely a passenger.

At least it's unlikely a need for a google bike

So we'll still have our escape for a while
