This is the actual one I test rode in 2011 whilst making my mind up which bike to buy.

I really liked the look of the bike but I found myself searching for 6th gear quite often and it kept cutting out at junctions! I suspect the idle was incorrectly set.

The fact it was chain drive put me off too, but at the time I thought belts were without issue!

I went on to test ride a silver TB and liked the power and ride more - hence buying one.

I still think the speedy is a great bike though, and that it really looks good in red!

I had an America for a couple of years and put 22,000 on her. Never had too many problems that I didn't create myself but loved this bike. She had good power but I had different sprockets front and rear that I would run depending on my location. Also had different chains to fit the different sprockets. Anyway great bike and would buy another.

I still have my 03 Speedy and it will fly. Have been thinking it is faster than my Bird too. Granted i have the bird loaded with fairing, hard bags crash bars etc. The Speedy pulls much stronger, faster from the start and might even out run it at top speeds. I've had it up over 110 easy. Not stock of course, BB, cam, air box out, exhaust, carb jetting and changed sprockets. for top end. It may get ridden a few times a year and I really should sell it but every time I ride it I change my mind. Damn motorcycles

Here's mine. I have had it since 2004 and bought it to cruise around and go a few miles down to my favourite watering holes.
It has ended up going to 26 or 27 countries (some numerous times), ranging from Sweden to Morocco.
As can be seen, there are 2 Triumphs in this picture.

She's a beaut! I like the red/maroon? color. I haven't been following the more recent Speedy models, is that a standard color?

I got a new '11 Speedmaster as my re-entry bike to riding after a 24 year hiatus. Great bike, very peppy, but found it to be lacking when two-up in the Texas Hill Country -- lots of gear changes. And, maybe it was just the EFI, but it seemed pretty herky-jerky at slower speed. Bought the Storm 6 months later and kept the Speedy for my wife for a while. Alas, she decided riding just wasn't her thing, so I eventually sold it. Of course, with all the torque of the T-bird, I don't even really notice she's back there. Sure was a lot easier to push around in the garage though!

On an related note (this is the 'Other Triumphs' category) I recently got (stole!) one of the few remaining Sprint GTs left on the showroom floor here in the US. I did a 2700 mile trip on the Storm last spring, and got the touring bug bad. Thought the GT with those massive panniers and fairing might be better for long hauls. That 1050 triple engine is simply intoxicating, but still trying to get used to the vastly different ergos compared to the Storm. It's a much more involving bike to ride compared to a laid back cruiser, but corning is beautiful by comparison. Now, if I could just figure out how to fit that triple into my T-Bird frame... Oh, I guess they did that already some years ago.

I've never quite understood why Triumph has two almost identical motorcycles of equal cc, the America and the Speedmaster. I know of the few differences that distinguish the two models from one another, but in the grand scheme of things it sure doesn't seem like much. I'm surprised there's enough of a market to two support both models and that Triumph continues to produce both...I would've bet some ago that one would have been phased out by now due to their overtly similar nature.

I think it is pretty simple, Two different marketing strategies. and We still think we are the "Young Bulls " but in reality we really are "The Ol Bulls"

SM vs America = Young Bull Vs Ol Bull

Storm Vs TBird = Young Bull Vs Ol Bull

LT Vs Commander = Young Bull Vs Ol Bull

Except on the first pair there's a difference in cc and hp/torque, and the latter pair have different standard touring accessories to differentiate them. The differences between the America and Speedmaster seem, to me, to be far more subtle and negligible.

I suppose you're right...it's probably more about image and perception than anything else. I can't think of what else could account for it.

Don't forget the models from where it all began Bonneville Base,T100 and scrambler, so there are five 865cc parallel twin bikes from Triumph.

this is my 05 speedmaster bobber project. Mostly done except for paint. lots of custom bits whittled out of aluminum on her. I am still getting used to the big front tire. It is just a fun, fun bike to ride.

I love speedmasters. My last bike was a '05 and i'm thinkin if the day comes when the Tbird is just too much for me anymore in several respects including $, i may just go back to one.

I had an 05 Speedy.
At 92 thousand km I did the 904 kit. The old pistons looked like new and the barrels were perfect.
I did a few other things to it as well. Air box removal, battery relocation, trimmed fenders, rear suspension, headlight extension, lowered speedo, brake/light and other cosmetic stuff.

At 6ft and most of it in the legs I just found it 2 inches too small for me. The Storm is a perfect fit.

Funny, I don't remember being absent-minded.
