What is the point of that. It's a bit like riding a Street Triple and bitching that it's twitchy...

personally I tire of all the raving reviews that simply repeat the talking points that Triumph has undoubtedly provided to all the journalists. This guy said it as he sees it with is biggest "issue" was that the bike could handle, but would scrap the pegs before the limit. He also said that one could sense some very clever brains at work:
"You sense some very clever brains have been at work, flowing previously unseen levels of chassis understanding and engine refinement into the cruiser sector..."
I'll take this type of review over reheated talking points any day...

He just doesn't like cruisers, which is fine if you are a motorcycle owner, but when you are a motorcycle reviewer you best put those issues aside and judge the bike on how it does what it was built to do. It's like a music reviewer complaining that there wasn't enough kettle drum in the bluegrass album or food critic complaining that there weren't any vegan options at the steak house.

For example, when he complained about the low foot pegs one could assume that he is a sport bike guy and wants a setup like a sport bike. What I think he was trying to say is that since the bike really does handle well for a cruiser, why didn't Triumph take advantage of that and provide a bit more ground clearance. A point that is enhanced by the lack of peg feelers on your Tbird

I could certainly use a bit more clearance (was on this great on-ramp this morning that I could really get on it and lean into it... 70 mph hard accelerating and grinding the hell out of that right hand peg... wooohoo) BUT, that's part and parcel of the cruiser setup.
Anywho, the title I gave this was a bit tounge in cheek as well... because as much as he just didn't seem to 'get it'. It was essentially a fairly positive review. But, this is the worst so far.

Well said. I agree completely and don't think it is a bad review at all. He's right about the lean angle restriction. All I disagreed with is that the bike feeks heavy. But then I came here from 2 Valkyries and a Rocket III.

| Posted : 14 Apr 2010 - 15:30 Post title : Re: Worst Review Yet | | I didn't even read it ! I started to but by the time i got one paragraph in and read "Unsurprisingly, the new Thunderbird is no canyon-carver" and i stopped right there. Had it been a sport bike would he have said "Unsurprisingly, the new daytona is no cruiser"? that was enough for me to know what thatch was saying, and i don't care how positive it was, it was done in a backhanded way. It's like saying it's good for what it is, but what it is is shit. Why not say "surprisingly it is quite a canyon carver for a cruiser"? After all, who doesn't know cruisers generally aren't, so why point that out. But it IS, and that IS surprising, so that should have been how he started it out. But there was indeed an underlying comparison between the bird and sport bikes going on in his mind, whether or not he outright said that. Do car reviewers compare a porshe to a mack truck? They both have 4 wheels. I understand what you're saying engage, but i just don't see the need to even go where he went. Those comments cloud the review and don't tell the story the way it should be told in order to give a cruiser enthusiast the info he needs to form a conclusion as to where it sits within the cruiser category. Some will get it, some won't. But i just don't feel guys like this are impartial enough. If he can't review it for what it is because of his personal bias he should step aside and let someone who CAN do the review.
Like i said, i only read that one thing. But i stopped because i have read 1 or 2 other reviews by someone with similar disdain for cruisers and i know how it goes. I don't mean to imply this is a real sore spot with me because to be honest i could care less. but if you want to evaluate a reviewer and how he went about a particular review, then theres my opinion.....i think that if the rest of the review went like that line that stopped me, then he was the wrong man for the job.

Having said the above, it sounds like he is more entitled to his opinion about something he tested than you are about something you didn't read. I have a book on quantum mechanics that I doubt you have read. Would you care to write a review on it?

Hit the right peg hard yesterday. Scared the piss out of me, but I have at least touched both sides now
Back to the topic at hand. It wasn't my intention to start a debate. I read the article differently (and apparently wasn't the only one) so I said so. Thatch understands this.
Opinions among people vary for a lot of reasons - often personal. For me, I've spent a lifetime in corporate america and have grown tired of the constant marketing "spin". All these articles we read about the Bird say the same things: handles great, smooth power, designed by whats-his-name, fills a gap, not a V-twin, blaw, blaw, blaw. All the journalists are 1) riding the bike and then 2) rearranging the words Triumph provided them so that the article is "their's". I know this because as a software executive I have been a part of this "game" and have grown tired of it. So while this last article wasn't as "nice" it at least seemed honest, which is why it didn't have an issue with it.
