| Posted : 08 Sep 2013 - 17:13 Post title : Platt vs Foran | | Hey guys, been awhile since I've been around. Hope everyone is doing well. Anyway, have been contemplating a new exhaust and was originally thinking I want the Foran pipes but the Platt pipes are getting some pretty good remarks. I don't see any comparisons between the two though. Has anyone seen and better yet heard both of these in person?
My thoughts are: I like the simple look of the Platts and the remarks about their deep bass note, but I'm a little concerned about the heat shield aesthetics and that they seem to be more prone to decel popping. The Forans have excellent remarks about the sound and have a better visual transition at the junction, but have very unique styling that I may either love or just think is so-so once I see it in person. I have the feeling that both are very good build quality. Not having seen or heard either in person, I'd appreciate any thoughts from those who have some experience with them.
Also, I live in the North Dallas area so if anyone has either set and is close I'd really appreciate a chance to check them out. Thanks.

The Platts as far as I'm concerned have no comparison The tone is and I don't mean like Midges voice no matter how good his Neil Diamond is I understand that Dave Platt is working on new shields that would cover up the join. I'd go for them, though most admit I like the conical taper of the Triumph TORs.

I have the Foran pipes and I think they sound better than anything I've heard but that means nothing since there is no bench mark for what pipes are supposed to sound like for any given bike. Most compare with the Harley note and that is tough to match given that the HD engine is designed to render that note. Buy what sounds good to you and who cares what the rest of us think.

That's why I'm asking for info from people who have seen or heard both. I've listened to clips and I've looked at pics but we all know that you never really know until you see it or hear it in front of you. Thanks for your input though.

Can only speak from experience as i bolted my Razorbacks to my bike 4 weeks ago. Never heard or saw a pair other than this forum , but had a mate ring me and tell be he just saw a set of curved pipes on a Thunderbird and sounded bloody awesome. So rang Denis and had a chat and placed the order. Sound is great from idle to accelerate. Tuned on a dyno with 87 hp and 116nm torque and also running the K&N high flow filter from Fast Eddy. My mates prefer to ride behind so they can listen to the note as you accelerate out of a corner as they reckon its a great note. As a rider it sounds awesome to me anyway. Like all things there are horses for courses and some like these , some like the BC , some like the Platts. They all offer a great product and sound is really something that suits the individual. So good luck with your choice.
I find the best way is just say - Fuck it think i will get me some of those.
I know personally i made a great decision on this one.
Cheers Murray

Sure did. Fiqured i would get the best bang for my buck . We elevated most of the back fireing as well whilst on the dyno tune side of things. Whilst cruiseing it has a nice, not to loud rumble and only comes into play when you twist the throttle. Twist a little just a small improvement in noise quality. Twist a lot and bring on the rumble of the Razorbacks.
Cheers Murray

I think you will find it 116ft lb of torque which is about 157 nm. Forans sound better than any others I have heard and they are made of stainless steel so will never rust or lose their shine.

But, if I recall, the Forans are up there at about $1500USD, while the Platts are listed at about $900USD. That's a lot of change that can go toward a dyno tune, or other goodies. If you got the spare coin, then it might be worth that "perfect sound". But to me, if I had to choose between the 2, I'd probably go with the Platts because it's gotten equal, rave reviews.
Probably doesn't help you much, but it might make your pillion happier

My problem is that, while both exhausts seem to have a reputation for high quality and craftsmanship, I am not sure exactly how much they cost. That's because I've emailed both and heard back from neither. Which is pretty disappointing. But since I know that you guys in the forum are very helpful I should point out that I'm running elbows right now instead of cat. So for each system I'd be requiring the crossover. I'm under (possibly the wrong) impression that the Forans were around $1500 and included the crossover and I think I recall looking at the Platts and thinking with crossover they'd be around $1200 or $1300, which is a much smaller difference in price. But I guess it will have to come down to flipping a coin since I can't see or hear them in person, and apparently nobody else has seen/heard both either. I know someone earlier mentioned them both being great and I should just pick one, but that's a lot of money to drop on an exhaust and not be sure it's the best one for me.

If he does, might save you a few bucks, but even his price was $1650ish.
Good luck!

+1. The shorts look very sporty to me, the opposite of grandad. If anything looks grandad it would be the forans. After all, like grandad they're flaccid.

Since I bought in bulk I got basically $150 off each set when you include shipping to the US from AU. $1600 plus shipping to your door.
