I got a hot rodding magazine and had a intresting artical on headers which included math for picking header/making headers. the math has alot to due with where intended peak torque is. This effects is by the pipe diameter. So where for the thunderbird would be the best point for peak torque. As to when i leave afganistan and go back home i intend to make a set of custom headers.
here is the math they provided

PPA (Primary Pipe Area)= (peak torque RPM / 88200) x 1 cylinder ci

PPA= (pi) R squared (pi time radius squared) solve for radius

some math done for the 1700
5000 rpm = 1.93 inch pipe
3000 rpm = 1.50 inch pipe
what are other peoples thoughts where peak torque should land and what is the factory inside diameter of our headers being they are double walled?

they had messurements for how long of pipe to run before collector and its effect on rpms as far as stepped information i didnt see anything on this.

Nice warthog! That's my favorite plane since I was a kid watching them haul ass out of the Air Guard base in Syracuse. As for the optimum RPM, I'd say about 3000. That's the speed where I find myself most often wanting to do a "roll on" on the highway to pass someone and need it the most - equates to about 70 mph indicated (about 65 true speed). A two into one design culminating underneath the bike would be really cool, by the way. If you want to make a run of them, I'd be first in line.

Underneath? Have you been under there lately? Barely enough room to close an umbrella, I tell you what.

And as I understand it this h-pipe config is far better. Carry-on.

i found a book with more information about this math and have ordered it will reasearch more. before building my own headers

...just any h-pipe?....Like every T bird owner it seems, I want another ten to fifteen lbs of torque....but the combinations of different tunings and pipe configurations have me baffled...(no pun intended).... I want a sweeter (more) sound, more torque, and better mileage.........on the cheap, haha.....

how many people would be intrested in 1 3/4 inch headers if i got some one to build several sets.

Problem is a 1 3/4 header isn't going to help at all. You'll need to step up to 2 inch headers. That's what I run on my Thruxton and it made an additional 4 hp on the dyno. What you're trying to do is scavenge exhaust gases much faster. One quarter to half an inch isn't going to do it.

do you think the cross pipe would make a diffrence? looking at header math it looking like 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 is where you want to be with out loosing to much torque

Forget your little math book. For the cylinder volume of the 1600/1700, you're not going to get any benefit with the diameters your calculating. The cross over pipe balances the exhaust pulse and is required without a doubt.

These were made by Urbane Exhausts in the UK. Everything from the manifold outlet is 2" through to the silencers. Price wise, you don't want to know!

Exhaust tuning involves a load of calculations as to the diameter and the length of pipe. I'd like to see what happens here.
