I was looking at Saddlemen tunnel bags that mount to the rear seat or pillion. Models TS1620S or TS1450R. Amazon says these don't fit the Bird.
Does anyone know why? My first thought is that the stock Bird doesn't have good attachment points on the rear fender to hook bungees and such. Does anyone have experience with this bag? Or, can anyone recommend a top bag that works. I have no sissy bar and don't plan on getting one.

I used a gym back with bungees this weekend. It served the purpose, but was clumsy to get stuff in and out.

Saddlemen TS1620S Tunnel/Tail Bag - Black
TIA.

Not sure about those models, but don't look like they can fit much. When I need to pack for a weekender (or longer), I use this:

It's a Saddlemen, too.

I can load it with roadside gear, wet gear, spare helmet (or bungee net a helmet on top), clothes, and still have room for cleaning stuff, a six pack, and my laptop. I've used it both with and without the sissy bar. Sitting either on the pillion pad or on the tubular fender rack.

It has adjustable quick buckles, and I attach the front to the upper shock mount, and the rear to the tubular rack, sissy bar, or use the quick release sissy bar studs. Putting it on takes about 3 min, taking it off takes about 3 sec.

When I don't need so much stuff, I usually have either my softball gear or my laptop bag held down with a bungee net, on the tubular rack, and simply hook to the QR sissy bar studs and the rack itself.

It sure looks like either of them should fit quite nicely.

I wonder how well it would work strapped to the flat tubular luggage rack, since I don't have a pillion seat. I am concerned about the sides hanging too low and rubbing something that shouldn't be rubbed. Sitting on top of a pillion though, it should work just fine IMO.

I recently picked up a small Kuryakyn tail bag to sit on my rack. It's basically a flat bottomed roll bag. Great quality, just the right size I was looking for but.... Even with all the D rings and Velcro straps that came with it, I couldn't get it properly secured to the rack. Instead of drilling holes in the bottom of a $110 bag and fabricating my own mounting system, I took it back and will continue the search. If this bag doesn't sit too low, I may have found what I'm looking for.

Jamie, how deep is the tunnel section of your bag?

John,
The "tunnel" bags, like the OP found or the one I use, don't rub anything. Mine actually sets lower, just below the rear fender. Most of the time, I have it on the tubular rack, and still just about even with the lowest point of the fender. Sits a tad higher if I sit it on the longhaul pillion (w/ or w/o sissy bar) as the pillion seat is a bit higher off the top of the fender.

As for tie offs, if you don't have either QR sissy bar, or the Easy Brackets (or other saddlebag brackets), Eddy has some bungee/tie-off mounts that bolt to the fender mounts.

The downside of my tail bag is that it may not work well with any of the "flip top" hard bags (hardstreets, leatherlyke, etc.). But might be okay with some soft bags like Saddlemen, Willie and Max, etc. Otherwise, gotta take off the tailbag first, before I could open the saddlebag.

Thanks for the info.

I have Hardstreet slims with easy brackets as well as a one piece long haul seat with QR backrest w/ rack. This combined with my Nelson Riggs luggage is perfect for multi day trips. However, for the majority of my riding time, I like running a little more 'naked'. Just a solo seat with the chrome luggage rack. I need something to carry a few things so I strap a small roll bag to the rack. Unfortunately, my roll bag has seen better days, and is a bit small. I think this TS1450R might be just what I'm lookin' for.

Not a problem. I'm reading what everyone has to say. Looks like I'm not the only one looking for this solution.
