| Posted : 16 May 2013 - 20:15 Post title : Louder sound | | I have noticed that when my short tors equipped storm is ridden hard for a few hours the exhaust volume increases at least 50%, this was really obvious coming back from the flocking in Walcha where we rode back to Sale approximately 1300 kms on the Sunday. The next time I rode the bike it seemed to have quietened down again, obviously it must be heat related, but I miss the throaty sound it had while out on the road. Anyone else noticed this happening it was very noticeable .

Mine was doing that. I have decat, straight thrus, K and N filter and Dizzee tune. I also had the intermittent MAP sensor pipe error,,,,,
After chasing my tail thinking it was the tune loaded wrong, redoing the adaptation each morning - which made it run well, sound great - but mid way thru the ride it went bad again - now I have red (important it must be red) duct taped the pipes into the elbows, I set tune, ran adaptation - and rode with the right grin on my face - all solved. So I believe that when the pipes are intermittently leaking, the ecu adapts badly - resulting in a shitty sound and really rough low speed running, and bulk decel popping. Fixed the leaks - and now reliably runs sweet as a nut, quiet when I want it but still with a beautiful bark under the hammer. I am happpppy....
If you need the red duct tape - I can ship rolls from here for $1.50 per roll plus $389 shipping....

I'm going to keep an ear out and see if your 'heat related' question is valid. I think it probably is, now that you mention it.

Then when it warms up it relys on the sensors to tell it how much fuel to add. Even with the stock exhaust after about 10 minutes the bike not only got alot louder it ran alot better. If you park it for an hour and start it up its quiet again till it warms back up. Another way for me to tell is the idle. It idles at 1200rpm until it is fully warm then it drops down to 1000 rpm. The bike gets louder when the idle settles down.

Could be expansion and contraction, as in when the pipes are cold the diameter is smaller and you get the leakage. As the pipes get hot they expand and take up the gap. You could say that both parts of the pipe would expand at the same rate, however if one is thicker then it may account for expanding at a different rate. Good to know what the fix is though.

A while back, when I was still tryin to figure out the belt adjustment,I had removed the mufflers while road testing the machine for belt noise,in order to gain easier access to the adjusters, and noticed that the sound was indeed "A LOT QUIETER"then with the mufflers in place. Usually,it's the other way around, but not in this case.Does anyone have an explanation for that??? In other words, the motor is louder with the mufflers on, then off! Now my machine is completely stock and has the factory catalytic converter still in tact. ????????????? Dave!!!

i would put money on the bike being quieter with silencers.
2 reasons, maybe
1 - your going so much faster without all that weight so you are leaving the sound behind unlikely in your case
2 - a naked speaker is generally quieter without a "boom box" or designed housing. Maybe the silencers are acting in a similar way. We know different silencers produce diferent tones. (used to love the short mega on a matchless i had) had to check the date..... its not april 1 is it?

When you get rid of the silencer, the 1600 (or 1700) runs far better.
