| Posted : 14 May 2013 - 21:33 Post title : DIY super quick seat release | | Since I'm also a boater (34" trawler) and used quick release pins for Bimini tops I figured why not. I'm still looking for a knurled 6mm bolt for the back of the tour seat but I know that will be easy to find. As for the two seat bolts after some measuring and research get a 6mm drill bit and find 2 metric 6mm x 25mm locking pins. I got mine off Amazon $20.00 each but are US made and stainless. There are many types out there for about the same money. They are also available with lanyards which I may or may not put on. I order two of the seat bolts just in case I screwed something up but did not use them. These are available to anyone that wants them for $20.00 shipped US. One is pictured both unused. In any case I thought a drill press would be best for a good straight drilling. I got impatient and used a steady hand in a vise. They secure very well and I can have the seat off in seconds.

This sure is a brilliant site and forum, I am so happy to be here, a lot of facts and good ideas can be found among the friendly banter All is straight forward no banners no ads no commercial bullshit. On occasion I do visit other bike forums but give up after a few minutes getting pissed off with trying to sift out what is an ad and what is a real person post! Thus I am not a fan of "like buttons" and all the other wizardry that can be found on those commercial sites. Keep it simple

I would have done it your way but went got the Fast Eddy raised knurled bolts that are easy to do by hand: I find that with a ball end allen wrench the aft seat bolt is pretty easy to un screw. If the boat my wife and I crew aboard does not sell this week we are going to move her to Jacksonville for the summer. I'll PM you if that happens and we will have to ride.

I make a knurled lock screw just like this for a customers product, only they are M4. Not much out of my way to leave a bit on. They are stainless also.

Fishy, No doubt the BC were another great option. I'd just had the thought for a while and went with it. Do let me know if the boat makes it to Jax. I met a couple crew on a 125' Johnson in St Augustine a couple of years back. That wouldn't be you would it?

I'm with him Already lost the pillion seat after being parked up in London, got home and it was gone. I can only put it down to some low down thief loosening the bolt cos it was secure when I left it.

It just doesn't happen in my area. A buddy lost a helmet once but understand we leave the items loose on bikes in my area so quite easy to grab. To take the time to unscrew something would be out of the question, besides who in the US wants Triumph stuff. I usually ride to places bikers frequent and everyone looks out. Could be because so many carry guns.

Can't wait to get to fresh water.
We started on our own 32' Trawler and found that that big pile of bills were better being someone else's.
Riding from Jax is pretty good and were looking forward to escaping South Florida. Will PM when we get up there.
The quick pins might be too quick for me. For city parking I might think about putting back the hex headed bolts.
Where do you keep your trawler?

These look much easier to use. Do you think they would abrade the material base of the seat? I bet you could find them from Granger. The sides aren't really too hard if you have a long T allen wrench - until you strip the threats. That's why the push ball things come in handy.

I guess the trawler would be considered an accessory right? I keep it on the ST Johns river in Julington Creek at a friends place. He' s also a rider so we split between my 1981 Mainship, his 21 Scarab and our bikes. We are very close to Julington Creek Marina and Holiday Marina. Since the fairing install on the Thunderbird in late 2011 the boat never went out in 2012. I'm making an effort to do both this year. Let me know when you're coming. June 6 I'm taking the boat to St Augustine for a long weekend. Staying at the Marina in town. Where are you in south Fla?

Then all you would have to do is slacken the bolts off a couple of threads and pull the seat off. Quick-ish release but secure.

Doesn't rub the seat, easy to get on and off with the allen wrench on the bike. Put two rubber caps on both ends and it looks like it belongs on the bike. I don't like making it that easy for anyone to remove the seat. They can be had from New Thruxton for $27.45.
