| Posted : 13 Apr 2013 - 10:21 Post title : Chrome Wheels | | G'day Guys 'n Gals,
Just a quick question - does anyone have the factory chrome wheels on their Tbirds? If so, are you happy that you took the plunge and bought them? How is the quality of the chrome?
I'm up for new tyres soon, and have been seriously contemplating getting a set of chromies while i'm at it. I love the look of the stock alloy wheels, but keeping the shine and preventing tarnish/pitting is a pain in the freckle. Chrome is far easier to keep clean, and i much prefer the look of chrome.
If you have chrome wheels on your bike i'd really love to see a photo, if you would be so kind. I'm guessing they would stand out a lot more than the alloys.
Cheers. Nux.

I'll contact him if he doesn't reply to this thread. Cheers for the heads-up.

The quality is just "ok" and they are easier to keep looking nice than the alloys. They could've improved the quality if they would've smoothed out the sides of the spokes before they chromed them. No idea how durable the finish is, as I wipe them down after every ride.

Thanks Matt, .... yes I bought the chrome wheels ( twice ! ... but that is a different story )
I love the look of the chrome wheels they really add an extra bling to an already tarty bike
Unfortunately , despite looking after them from day 1, using Belgom with it's wax finish and a generous coating of ACF50, cleaning them everytime they got dirty, and generally cosseting them, ... the inside edge of the rear wheel rim began to develop small corrosion marks (less than a year old at about ~3k miles) which gradually got worse and then when I used to clean them it would catch and tear the cloth or cut my fingers on the sharp pieces of flaking chrome.
The rear wheel is definitely worse, the front wheel is still pretty good.
The dealers in the UK are all aware of the problems and have offered other owners to pay to have them powder coated, BUT I paid for bling and am not a great fan of the powder coat finish. More importantly though as my painter said even if we powder coat them the corrosion is still going to continue underneath and it's only a matter of time before the powder coat over the shitty chrome comes off.
The fact of the matter is that Triumph should not have chrome plated this alloy metal, it does not lend itself to this process and was always going to be a time bomb. (info I found out too late ) And Triumph should not be paying to have them powder coated it is only delaying the inevitable. BUT, I suppose if they last for a time that brings them outside of a reasonable warranty period then that could be their strategy.
I'm replacing mine with OE wheels.
It's your decision but I wouldn't get the chrome wheels, unless they were completely free and you knew that they would need replacing sooner rather than later.
Cheers John
BIG PS
The chrome pulley is also afflicted with the shit chrome condition and I've had to have that replace back to OE as well !!!

I've got some thinking to do, they really do look great, but it seems the quality is not all that flash - although Leethal says he has no problems with his.... so i guess it would be a bit of a gamble. I clean my bike after every ride and i would be using an anti corrosive sealant on them as well... i guess worst case scenario is i only get a year or so out of them until they look so shitty that i go back to the alloys.... which of course i'd still have, and i'd be down about $1600 .... but i guess i could flog them on ebay and get a few bucks back. I'm very saddened to hear that the chrome pulley is also of poor quality, i was going to get one of them too - along with the swingarm cover to make it really pop. I guess i could just stick with the alloys and buy a good stand so i can drop the wheels off every so often and give them a really good clean and coat with the anti corrosive sealant. It's just a real pain trying to polish the alloys when they are still on the bike.
Anyway, thanks heaps for the advice... it might all come to nothing anyway if they have stopped making them.... unless there's some still in stock in Australia - i'll have to ring Triumph tomorrow and find out... might even be able to haggle a deal since they've abviously had a lot of complaints about them.
Cheers guys, i'll keep you posted.

It seems that a fool and his chrome are easily parted I didn't wash my bike after a ride out a few weeks ago because it didn't look dirty and the roads were dry. Must have been some salt in the air though because when I went back to it a few weeks later there was some minor pitting on the pulley. Rear wheel also had very light corrosion but was easy enough to bring up to a high polish - the benefit of alloy with no coating (probably easier to restore because Id coated the wheels in poorboys).

I replaced the OEM rear pulley with a chrome one and so far so good. It came from a supplier in the States but I suspect they're all made in the same place. Not really enough k's on it to see a difference but it has been through quite a few soakings and covered in baked on mud from trips to the S.W. of WA and still cleans up good so far...

Pardon my ignorance, but i've never heard of ceramic coating.... in the famous words of that controvesial bloodnutted aussie - Please explain?
Like, what is the process, are there many places that do it? and how much does it cost?
Also - @ Leethal - I was actually wondering that too, about maybe the environment in oz is kinder to chrome than the UK.... it's a possibility since it seems aussies dont seem to be having any real issues with the chroming.
Thanks again to everyone who has provided feedback, it really is much appreciated.
Cheers.

if you Google ceramic coating it will tell you the whole process and what its made from you can get them ceramic coated in silver or black, I got mine done on the central coast (pro coat is the company) if I remember right it was around $300, ceramic coat is very durable and doesn't need much work to keep them looking good.

Right you are, Sir. They are no longer available in Australia either. I rang Gold Coast Triumph today, and they contacted Triumph Australia and they have been unavailable for about 8 months or so... apparently they are a discontinued line. Oh well, i guess that means the factory chrome wheels are no longer an option at all. I might ring around and find someone who is confident in chroming alloy. There's a guy fairly local here who has an excellent reputation, but he said he wouldn't touch them... too easy to stuff them up he says. I might look into the ceramic coating - seems a much cheaper option... as long as they still look super shiney - that's my only concern.
Thanks once again everyone.
