I ordered a set of rocket III roadster tank badges which should be arriving some time next week, and i know some of you have put these on your bikes. I also remember seeing that someone had mentioned that they had to be reworked a little prior to installing them. Just looking for a few words of wisdom regarding the install.

And what's the deal with the LH badge costing more then the RH badge?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this. I needed to track down a post from before that brought all the best/relevant information together in one place before replying and I can't really search on my mobile devices very well.

There have been a couple people use the RIII roadster badges. I was the first, but that's neither here or there... the reshaping issues are the same regardless of the particular badge (unless of course you are going old school metal badges) with the Roadster badges probably being the easiest simply because there is less mass to reshape. Some have reshaped with a hair dryer, some just used weight, some used hot water, you'll have to experiment a bit to find out what works best for you. I used a hair dryer and weight but in hindsight I think that hot water has the most promise for evenly and safely softening the plastic for recurving. The big key is getting rid of the stock tape that comes on the badge. It's adequate enough if the shape is dead on, but you're not going to get it dead on initially. Get some high 3M super strength molding tape and cut it to fit the backside of the badge (after you've reshaped it) Don't just add a piece or two, but cut it to fit the backside with as good a coverage as you can manage and it will help you with any less than perfect fit issues from your reshaping.

It would be best to read up on what people did to get it to work (and what went wrong). I put together a post about that some time ago that covers the 3 major threads on here about badge shaping and fitting. Take a look for that here...

Hope that helps.

Oh, and as for the issue of more money for the left than the right... No idea. Bike Bandit lists them both at the same price (about $35). It's a rip off for chrome plated plastic but the difference it makes on the bike is worth the expense. Can't say why you were charged differently for them though. It would seem to be a mistake (or purposeful gouging) I'd just ask your dealer about it Bike bandit lists the retail price at $38.82 each. No idea how that relates to you as you are in Canada though.

+1 on what Thatch said.

The double sided tape that comes with the badges is pretty weak. I was not able to (or patient enough) to reshape the badge so that it matched the curvature of the tank exactly, but with a good double sided tape the badges lay down tight against the tank.

My biggest issue was getting the proper placement, and making sure they were symmetrical on both the left and the right. I spent a lot of time measuring and making sure the badge was level. My bike is lowered slightly on the rear, and is slightly raised in the front, so attaching it at the exact same place as the original badge would not have looked right IMO.

Take your time, it will look great when you're done.

Xfarmer,

Thanks!
Must say, that badge sure does look good on the paint. I almost bought the same one back in 2010. Dealer had one sitting on the floor but I opted for the black one.....still kicking myself a little today about that decision.

Last question I promise.....just curious on what everyone used to remove the adhesive off the tank. I've seen the video on YouTube where 3m adhesive cleaner was used, but can't seem to find the stuff anywhere around me. I've heard WD-40 works as well, as well as scratch remover.

Use fishing line 'cut' the badges off. Get a good length and slide it behind the stock badge giving a bit of a sawing motion as you pull it through the foam adhesive. The monofilament line won't scratch the tank (but the badges are metal so control them as they come off). Once that is done you'll have some of the grey adhesive left, just roll off the majority of it with your finger and then use a micro fiber rag with some Goo-Gone on it and clean off the remaining residue. Job done (well except for the whole reshaping, measuring, adhering bit)

3m Adhesive remover, Goo Gone, or any product designed for bug and tar removal should do the trick of getting the residue off. I used a hair dryer to warm up the adhesive during the removal process as well.

According to the guy who straightened a tank for me once, left side drops are much more common than right side drops because of kickstand whoopsies, and so I'll bet the left badges get replaced more. They are probably wholesaled in pairs, and the retailers if deciding to sell just one or the other will eventually end up with a box of rights and no lefts, so the price on the rights goes down. Supply and demand... a beautiful system.

Lookin good Xfarmer,

I too will re position the badges soon, I also want to drop the rear by 1-1/2".
Have you had any major scraping issues since the drop.

Absolutely none. But... as well as lowering the rear, I raised the front about an inch. (do a search for Thunderbike extended fork caps). Also, after putting a 55 series tire on to replace the 50 series Metzler on the back, my actual ground clearance is probably close to stock again. In the picture, i still have the old Metz on the back.
