| Posted : 10 Apr 2013 - 06:12 Post title : Storm Plastic Grips | | Am considering swapping the grips on the 2013 Storm as I find them fairly slippery when wearing thick gloves.
As Triumph don't make an alternative, I am thinking of the geniune heated grips or aftermarket grips such as the Avons or Roland Sands.
I have read the other posts regarding the 'breakage' of the aftermarket/heated grips and the solution to file the sharp edge of the switch housing.
My questions are:
1) Are the bar weights necessary on the Storm grips or are they cosmetic?
2) Does the Thunderbird model (1600) have rubber grips or are they hard plastic like the Storm?
3) Is there an aftermarket grip that comes with bar weights?
4) Has anyone changed their grips without replacing the bar weights and suffered from vibration as a result?
Thanks in advance,
|

If you ride more than 20 minutes at a highway speed it will help with comfort to avoid tingly hands. On the Thunderbird, if you remove the weights, there is an unsightly mounting flange that is exposed. So cosmetically, they are necessary. You do not need to use the official triumph grips. I personally am using regular 7/8" rubber "gel" motorcycle grips for sportbikes. They stretch around the bigger dimensions of the Thunderbird's bars/twist grip and can be easily trimmed as necessary to clear moving parts on the throttle side if they don't fit perfectly at first. There are little nubs on the barrel of the underlying plastic twist grip that keep the stock hard rubber grip from slipping, and should be trimmed with a razor knife for the aftermarket grips to be used (othewise the ridges make bumps on the soft rubber grips). Less vibrations with the rubber grips by the way, as the softness absorbs a lot.

Swapped my grips etc out for the Kuryakin ones, with the helmet holder locks instead of the bar-end weights and also with the palm cruise-control (?) pad.
That was the best thing ever fitted ...!! No hand cramps on long rides as the edge of the palm takes the throttle tension.
No noticable vibration with the original weights removed and the helmet locks are significantly lighter....

Essbjay - what is the black fuel cap that you have there and I like the mirrors. Nice job!
