| Posted : 19 Feb 2013 - 15:12 Post title : Are the current heated grips "improved" as to cable attachment? | | I have read of the failure of the heated grip throttle attachment breaking and wondering if this has been changed on the current version. If so is there a way to tell the old from the hoped for new design?
I'm kicking around heated grips vs heated gloves as I'm finding the heated gloves I wear are too bulky. I'm thinking of hand deflectors and heated grips as the way to go.

(Re: fishy) | | Not a big fan of heated grips, reason being, they only heat the front of the hand. Whereas heated gloves heat the back, front and between the fingers, the bits that really need heated. Now heated grips and heated gloves, well thats a different story.
| I won't believe it until it has been officially denied.

Just got a job in South Florida and I'm looking at 89 F this weekend break out the summer gloves and mesh jackets !
The cool looking bar ends are Manic Salamander brand throttle locks. They SUCK ( sorry to be blunt) as a throttle lock but really kill vibrations On the grips. You adjust tension with washers and I am unable to make it Lock properly. They can be dangerous if not properly functioning so I am using a Cramp Buster when needed.

(Re: fishy) | | I got a set of performance machine grips (roland sands). just ordered them as I have no faith in the heated grips anymore. I ordered a set that fit Star motorcycles. I forget who but it is confirmed that there grips fit our bikes. I will post pics when they are installed, and I will put my heated grips up for sale.

Fits like the Kuryakyns (a little lateral slop) which is fixed with either an o-ring or a short piece of PVC pipe/tube cut to fit into the end of the grip. My Ness' still have the plastic, so I'm keeping an eye on them. I took a dremmel to ease off the sharp edge of the switch housing where the cables enter through the guide. The edge was impacting (acting as a "stop") the grip's plastic cable holder, causing it to crack.

The Aerostitch ones were inexpensive. I will report back in a week or so. I'm sure as soon as the grips go on I won't see any more cold weather. Link

(Re: Bodger) | | I had dealer-installed Triumph Heated Grips put on my bike, a 2010 1700 ABS (Jet Black) , and bought new in September 2012, in October 2012. On Christmas Eve 2012 the throttle failed, stranding me miles from home in the New England winter. Triumph was shut down until after the New Year and once I reached them, they alleged no knowledge of this problem. The repair was fully covered but the towing charges were not. I have the failed sleeve and am astonished that there has not been a recall. If this were an airplane., just imagine...

Bummer about breaking down and no towing. I am a member of the American Motorcycle Association which is a good group that fights for riders rights on a federal and state level. Part of the auto renew membership is a towing package good for 35 miles at no charge.
After reading all these failures I have added to my extensive tool roll some stainless steel wire and some small zip ties. I figure with enough wire I could jury rig a throttle cable or fix the end. Also have 5 minute JB Weld, duct tape and superglue. When your friends ride Harleys you can't bring enough tools and stuff with you
