| Posted : 13 Jan 2013 - 11:31 Post title : Portable bike garage? | | Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with non-permanent bike garages? We are about to move and the new Tbird sleeping quarters are somewhat less than adequate. That is there is none. Obviously this will not do so I am on the hunt for a bed for my two wheeled baby. I have looked up a few options on the net like the Bike barn and the cycle shell. The latter doesn't seem readily available in Aus anyway. I am heading out to look at a few 'garden shed' type options tomorrow as I'm told that there are a few that will house her. Does anyone have any experience with any of these options or something else that would work? The house we are moving into is a rental while we build so a permanent structure isn't an option. Thanks for any help.

(Re: Oak) | | Another option to look at is a "METAL SHED" sold by Home Depot and other places around here.I think you'll find em alittle more stable then a tent and probably compatible in price.I don't know if you guys have a Home Depot over there, but I'm sure someone there sells em.
And yet still another option, which I like the best, is an enclosed trailer.[ like the U Haul variety] I have several friends,[one has a brandy new Gold Wing and another has a brandy new Electra Glide]who bought an enclosed trailer specifically to store their bikes in cause they have no garage and or no space in their garage, not to mention transporting em if need be, or using the trailer to transport other cargo or motorcycles. And because the trailer has wheels, you can easily move it around the yard or driveway.I bought one a loooooooooooong time ago, specifically for transporting broken down or unregistered machines,as well as other cargo.Any way ya look at it,it's a win win situation. Dave!!!

These are an easy option but make sure your bike doesn't sweat inside it. You need plenty of ventilation in metal sheds.

Most of the sheds sold around here have vents made right into the eves or the gables.Even the trailer I have has a roof vent that opens and closes. Dave!!!

I ended up getting a dutch barn shed that has high eaves and double doors and this works perfectly after putting some extra sheets of flooring to reinforce the base.
U use a 10 foot by 8 foot one of these Link
Bargin for the brits this one Link the right size too it seems

Good luck

I'm off to check out the 'garden shed' situation today. if i do go with that option i'll fit a roof wirly bird vent and some flooring to make her a nice little bed.

That was my first thought, too. A small, heated, ground-floor storage unit with outside access would seem ideal.

| Posted : 16 Jan 2013 - 08:26 Post title : Re: Portable bike garage? (Re: Oak) | | Cheers Oak I did see the same thread. If i go with the bike barn or the cycle shell my plan was to go with the bike barn but then attach it to a either a marine ply floor with breather holed drilled in and marine carpet over the top (floor slightly elevated from the ground) or some other timber style floor. More for my own piece of mind I think. Unfortunately the Cycle Shells aren't readily available here in Australia and the cost of freighting here makes them a fair bit less financially viable. I am still looking into the 'garden shed' style but I'm having trouble finding one here that has an opening large enough to fit the bird in and enough depth to house her without being a full garage size which would make it hard to hide from the bloody council regulators who want their two bucks for approval let alone building approval. Any way I shall not be defeated! I have to have some form organised soon as i've only got to the end of the month pretty much. I'll keep you posted!

I had a bike barn for about a year before it fell apart on me the material ripped because of the wind . It serves a purpose but like you have mentioned you will need to do something else to make it last . A base where you can attatch the bottom of the front frame to will defnatly help and get the bike off the floor as it dosnt stop any moisture from getting under it . I found my bike started to seriously rust over the winter because of that. Jap rubbish after all hehehe . But the barn will work as long as you do some mods to make it more stable . Also if you have a base put some kind of clip on the rear part to hook the last section to the base when you pull the consitina down at the back or the wind will pick it up and rip it away.
Oh also its fcking huge.... My wife hated it . Then again maybe I shouldnt have forced her to live in it.

| Posted : 17 Jan 2013 - 07:53 Post title : Re: Portable bike garage? (Re: Druid) | | haha nice Druid. It's so hard to please everyone sometimes I've just ordered a metal shed 2.4m x 3.0m with a double sliding front door (slides open from the centre). I'm going to do the same sort of thing with it I think. That is construct a base out of timber to fix it too. It will be slightly elevated from the ground so it can breathe with a few vent holes in it and I'll slap down a bit of marine carpet over the top just for that added 'crank' factor I'll put a whirly bird vent on the roof because it gets warm over here sometimes (currently a balmy 44 degrees) and she'll need a nice cool home. I'm pretty sure the mrs won't be too upset to live in it I'll put up a picture when it's finished but we won't be moving until the start of next month and it won't get built until then. Where about's in the UK are you Druid? I'm heading over to Ireland with a mate (and possibly the lovely lady) around August for the (Police and Fire) Games and we plan to have a look around afterward. I'm always keen to hear where the good watering holes are
