I'm with Thatch on this one. I like the belt. It's cleaner and less of a hassle compared to a chain and looks better than a shaft. Once you get the Triumph adjustment tool, it's easy to adjust. Lastly, and I'm going to take some backlash for this, but the only folks that tend to have issues with the belt are the same folks that never stop adjusting it. Get it into spec and then leave it alone.

Adjustment tool? We have to adjust the belt? Damned thing is trouble free now 14 months in. Give me a belt any day. This is the first bike I have had with one and I'm loving it.

Adjusting the belt is a part of the process of changing the rear tire. Once adjusted, indeed, leave it alone. I change my own tires so I have the tool.

This guy has been changing bike tyres for over 10 years and I was there when he worked on it and i couldn't see a problem as he slid the greased axle in with his hand ( with some help by me) and only used a soft mallet to tap it home after the thread was already through the right side of the swing arm.

The awkward bit was lining up the caliper.

Anyway thanks guys for your learned opinions.

The bagged version might be the push I need just wish it was more then bolt on stuff. I have a speedmaster I would keep as a bar hopper because I totaled it and rebuilt it. But I have been looking at road kings style bike for my wife and I do to longer trips on. A full fairinged one would be ideal but this might be a good start. There has always been something about the bird that just didn't do it for me. The fatter front, different fender and head light plus bags with a sissy bar might seal the deal. Though that gas tank is still to bag IMO.

How much did the belt cost you. I like wise do a lot of Long Long rides and was thinking of carrying one.

Shortly after buying this machine,I bought a belt for stock as a "just in case". I paid 300 USD for it from the dealership, and they did NOT stock it.So I suspect nor do other dealerships. And it took some time to get, meaning,if ya need one now,and you or the dealer does not have one in stock, you're gonna be drivin somethin other then your bike for awhile.

Now alittle FYI: The belt is made by "Gates rubber co." And the SM has belt specs, pitch, width, number of teeth, etc.listed in it.So,armed with that information,ya might be able to find one on line using those specs, and for a lot less money. But since I already have one,I never checked into it further. But when my belt needs replacin,[I'm told they should last 100,000,plus miles if driven nice Ya right!! ] I'll put the one I have in stock on,and then try "on line" before buyin another one from Triumph.Dave!!!

If I remember right, the belt for our bike was designed specifically for our bike only. I have just got delivery of another Gates belt today for my Haas lathe and it is in the same rounded format but not as big. I will have a go at my belts supplier to see if gates use the same for industrial as for the bikes. Cant see them going to all the tooling and trouble just for a few thousand belts, I bet they are used elsewhere.

You could be right Mat.But remember,Triumph is NOT the only machine that uses a belt drive,so somebody has to make em and somebody has to have specs on it!

Anyways,I lied about the belt specs being in the SM.I just went out and looked and noda. But I know I saw the belt specs somewhere.I just gotta remember where. DUH!!! It might be stamped on the package that my new belt came in but I can't get at it right now cause the wife's car's in the way.I'll look tomorrow after the car is gone.My appologies gentlemen. Dave!!!

You're right Mat.But at 32" wide,I'll bet the belt would last a lot longer.

I went lookin this morning and did find that same number. It was on the OEM parts fiche for the Tbird at Bike Bandit's web site.I knew I saw it someplace but couldn't remember where.Double DUH!! Now if we can find that spec on line,we might just be able to save a few $$$$.And unless I miss my guess,we'll save a LOT of $$$$. Dave!!!

Gates calls their drive belts "POLYCHAIN DRIVE BELTS". For the last hour or so,I've been searchin the web for another source for a belt for the bird and all I'm comin up with is HD's which I could give two fucks about.Someone makes em,AND,for a lot less money. We just gotta find that someone. Is there not a Harley model that uses a belt with the same specs? I'd have no problem buying a belt at a Harley dealer if it saves me money.

The HD uses a different belt from the Triumph, and I think you'd feel differently if ya had to buy ANYTHING from a Harley dealer.lol If ya think the Triumph stealers are bad,try shoppin at your local HD dealership. Then compare Triumph's prices to Harley's prices. They're both bandits, but HD wins the prize in that department. Dave!!!

Oih Mat & Dave
Here is a link that show the Part Number and Price. which I would imagine is in Yankee $'s $288.57

Link

Plus their Triumph OEM Parts Master Page.

Link

If these prices are realistic then it's most probably not worth chasing a "Pirate Supplier"

Thank you for the website Gerry. I was not aware of this particular site.Somethin I noticed on this site that I did NOT see on the other sites is the rear cog flange which bolts onto the inside edge of the rear drive cog.The other sites listed it as part of the drive cog and ya had to buy the whole thing, and naturally, for PREMIUM MONEY. This site lists it seperately. And ya know fuckin right well, sooner or later, you're gonna need one of those.lol Dave!!!
