Long story short I was dirt bike riding with my son at an off-road park that has ONE WAY trails when I come drifting around a bend with a bit of speed on and what do I see coming at me???? Wait for it.... A 4 wheeler (ATV) going the wrong way on the trail. The 4 wheeler was taking up the width of the whole trail which left me no room to go around. I had too much speed to stop in time so in order to avoid a head on with the 4 wheeler I opted to leave the trail and try to negotiate the trees beside the trail. I crashed, broke my foot badly. Number 2, 3, and 4 metatarsals are broken in half and displaced. The X-ray does not show it but the 2nd metatarsal was shattered in five pieces. And yes I had full MX riding gear on. This happened Veterans day and I had surgery four days after to put the pins in. I will be off of any bike for at least 6 weeks. See pics below.

Ouch ! Looks painfull. I've had pins, but not like those. The ones i had were screws they literally drove in with a drill ! Did your son freak when he saw this happen?

Nope, he has seen me get busted up before. I am a big believer in sucking it up as much as you can because losing your mind when you get hurt makes matters much worse. Bad thing was I had to kick start my bike and ride it out to the parking area about a mile and a half away. I could not stand on the pegs or use the back brake.

Ouch. Those tree things don't take prisoners. Did you manage to pass any message onto the ATV rider

Hope things go smooth for you and you have a speedy recovery.

YIKES! That looks painful. Hope the recovery is smooth and quick. This whole mess should really be on the 4-wheeler pilot's dime...

Damn that sucks, painful is an under statement I'm sure.

I shattered my ankle 14 years ago, slipped in my drriveway Ended up with 14 screws, a steel plate, and a pin.

Listen to the doctor and get well quick.

fucking hell! I empathize, I fell off my guzzi a few weeks ago and cracked a few ribs which was painful but it really sucks when you hurt your feet because you become a cripple that limps around. I busted up my foot years ago on an sr500 yamaha and it hurt for a year - and i was in my 20's then, still managed to ride the bike even with the foot in plaster, lucky it was the left foot so i could still kick start the 500 single.
It seems inevitable that we hurt ourselves periodically crashing motorcycles and it seems to hurt more the older i get but we must keep on riding. Hope you get better soon and don't suffer too much tree banger

Tree banger... Nice fellas. Yes, the older we get the more it hurts and the longer it takes. I am 41 and things hurt a lot more now than they used to. Getting around really is a bitch to say the least.

The good thing is I have time to do my valve adjustment that is 8,000 miles over due. I have the thing torn down and five of the valves need to be adjusted, awaiting shims in the post. This bike is a pain in the ass to adjust the valves and reset the timing.

Well at least you can get something done, my last big smash got me in a hospital bed for nearly 4 months held together with bits of wire and weights. Then another month to get to walk again, the only things that functioned in all that time was my right hand and luckily my manhood - but not at the same time.

how many miles have you got on your ride. Have the valves been adjusted before ?

I have close to 28,500 miles on her. I had the BB kit done around 8,000 miles. The valves have not been inspected or adjusted since the BB kit was installed. That leaves 20,000 miles on the valves without inspection (8,000 overdue). All my intake valves where at .0127 MM and the service limit is .010 - .015. So I am going to shim them at .0147 mm which allows many miles to tighten up. Only one exhaust valve needed adjusting because it was out of spec on the loose side. The exhaust valves service limit is .015 - .020 MM and the one valve was at .0229. I am adjusting it to .0190. I figure 20,000 miles between valve inspections is enough, not the 12,000 Triumph recommends. I now know why it costs so much for this service. It is a pain in the ASS and takes a lot of time.

I fractured my navicular bone. It's on top of the foot just below the tallus. I had a long Home Depot screw put across the foot 6 weeks ago. I can just start putting a little weight on it in the boot. At 64 my bones are getting weak. It'll be a while before I know if it's strong enough to take the weight of a 750 lb bike. Of course I had the BB installed while it hurt like hell but I didn't know it was broken. I may have to trade down to a Bonnie or maybe a bicycle.

Good point on the timing!

I cant stand sitting around, I always have to be doing something. So while I am OCC (Out Of Commission) the Bird is getting its valves adjusted, the boys dirt bike is getting a big bore done to it, and my dirt bike is getting a good once over and a new set of grips. It sucks moving around in the garage on a set of crutches tho... I make my boy hand me my tools... lol

I thought about you and Thatch having fun playing in the dirt when I was going into surgery. Bastards...
