Seems they could have come up with their own name for it

I really don't care for it anyway.

Hang on, doesn't Triumph own the rights to the name Thunderbird? Except for a brief period in the 1950s & 60s when they allowed/sold Ford to use it. Some one correct me on this?

It won't matter if they do. This is India - they don't give a 7uck. The woman said 'wow what a great ride' - obviously never riden any other bike. Being made in India means it will drop to bits and everything on it will bend. I looked over a RE at the show and couldn't believe how shit these things are.

Oh My goodness gracious me.

Mat once again you are 1000% right. They look like crap,They sound like they have the power of a "Singer Sewing machine",and they really ride like crap. I followed a mate of mine as he was doing a test ride for about 80klms to put up some Ks for the dealer on a test bike and I could not get over the flex in the rear end every time it went around a cornor. He got it up to 110klms/hr and just about ended up with a horn it vibrated so much.

I'm riding with a RE crowd, and they are all as passionate about their bikes as we are. Still, there always seem to a few issues with the RE on our trips, ranging from peeling paint on brand new bikes, to complete engine break downs and exhaust systems falling off. Still, it is a matter of price, you can get 4-5 REs for a single Triumph Thunderbird.
AFAIK - the Triumph Thunderbird trade mark is protected in most (all?) of the western world, but less so in Asia in general, and obviously not in India. Whattodo???
In any case, I don't enjoy my "real" Thunderbird any less because of the cheap knock off with the unoriginal name...
Have a break, have a ride...

You guys are so harsh. I mean, i agree the styling is horrid, but it's improved leaps and bounds better than the mechanical side. They're really making strides and all you do is insult them !

Some of you guys are kind of harsh here. If you look at the average wage of someone in India you will realize that we are not on equal playing fields. The quality, and subsequently the price are lower for a reason. Taking that into consideration it is a very nice bike for what it is.

in india you dont want to spend a fortune as its life expctancy is probably a few hours on their roads,
this therefore is built into its product
no point over engineering, making a product last for more than a week,
whats the point?
so for india it is a really well machined bike

Hopefully Triumph will sue RE. If the name is registered does it really matter that the company is in India? I believe there is a segment of law that is international. It is clearly a copyright infringement. Besides I don't want my T-Bird in any way connected with the RE T-bird. Yuck.

The RE has only 27.2 hp. Is that enough to keep up with traffic? If I were looking for a 500 cc mc I would get a 2013 Honda CBR 500R for about the same money. Link

I think the RE thunderbird is only sold in India and I don't think Triumph has ever sold any Thunderbird model in India so I don't think they'd have any traction there to change things. If you've seen the news lately Apple lost the rights to the iphone name in Brazil because of a predated product from another company. This isn't much different. Besides, other than them both having 2 wheels, there really isn't any confusing one for the other.

I doubt that, or RE wouldn't have chosen the name. Copyright laws don't always cross international boundaries, and that is probably a good thing. When markets are geographically far apart, and monetarily very different it doesn't make much sense to worry about it anyway.
