Like the way i warded off any of those cat jokes? Anyways, a dremel and cutoff wheels is gonna take too long. What else can i use to open this can?

I had in mind my 4" angle grinder with thin cut off wheel to do mine, doesn't look too involved. Plasma cutter would be nice though.

Don't have one of those. As to looking involved, no. But the issue is the metal seems hard and thick. I ate thru a cutoff wheel and got and inch long cut, the width of the wheel. So gotta find a better way.

+1 on the angle grinder. You can usually rent them cheap for a day.

I'd be lost without mine.........I would likely have to find a hacksaw again, and that's no fun

Whats the thinnest wheel you can get for angle grinders? I don't want the slice to be 1/4" wide. Wouldn't that be a lot harder to weld?

Do you have any air tools? I've been using an air die grinder with a 3" 1/16" thick cut-off wheel to fabricate stuff and it works great. It would probably cut through the cat like buttah....I used it to cut the license plate bracket welds off of the inside of my rear fender, to cut exhaust pipes on another bike, to cut sheet metal, etc and haven't had any problems. Then again, if you don't have an air compressor then we're talking a few bucks, but my compressor is one of the best purchases I've made for my garage. I use that die grinder with cut-off wheels, finishing wheels, buffing pads, grinding stones, etc all the time.

No air tools, don't even own a compressor.

Wow. You need to do yourself a favor and go get one. I'm telling you, I use mine ALL the time. I have a 26 gallon 160 PSI compressor that I got from Sears with all of the necessary fittings plus I bought a ratchet, impact wrench, spark plug cleaner, and the precious die grinder. I thought the thing would come in handy for airing up tires and stuff occasionally, but it became the most used tool in my garage.

I can't. I don't have the option of having a compressor even if i want, which i do.

Electric Angle Grinder with cut off blade or plasma cutter.

Ahh. That sucks, Man. In that case, I agree with TB. I think the angle grinder is the next best option, but I'm not sure how thin the wheels go.

Holy shite, where have you been all my life ?!!! I don't usually talk to my power tools, but if i did thats what i'd have said to my new $15 angle grinder. Of course i knew it would be a lot better than a dremel with a cutoff wheel, but i never really had a job that needed more, just ones that would have been quicker and easier. But i didn't realize how much quicker and easier. Might have bought a good one if i knew how much i'd be appreciating that thing right now. $25 for the grinder and a 10 pack of very thin (1/16") wheels. Took about 20 seconds to make the first and longest cut, which with the dremel would have taken about $20 worth of wheels and probably 20 grueling minutes. Once again the old saying rings true.....it's always worth it to get the right tools.

By the way, anyone who is considering gutting thier cat, keep your eye on the classifieds. If this turns out to be much too loud i'll be selling it soon, and you won't have to do all the cutting and welding.

Question for Steve or whoever else opened thier cat....how did you secure the cat housings after removing the material? Since they are no longer welded to the housing at least on one side, did you somehow secure them or are there welds on the other side that are all it needs? I got it opened but i can see theres probably going to be a lot more welding than i thought.

I know you asked Steve, Daz but the easiest way is to take it to a welding shop. They can use a spot welder for the tags and Mig or TIg weld the long seams, with a minimal bead.

I had to tear the damn thing up so much it's gonna be a hell of a welding job. I think i know someone who can do it for me, otherwise it would cost too much. I had a shop tag that lousy shield on the header and they charged me $20 for a few seconds of welding. This will take 100 times longer.

Hey Daz,
Looks like you have some problems with this project.
Did you cut a large rectangle out of the bottom.?????????
Then when you see the cannisters lying in the inside ,you cut a rectangular portion out of them back as far as the weld line ,then prise the sides out, remove the material, then prise the sides back over and place the rectangular portion back in place and tack wel d it in place ,when you are happy wth the fitment and location you can then go to town with your mig welder ?tIG welder and weld it all back in place.including the little brackets that you may have severed and also add more welds to give it some bracing strength, when you are happy and standing back rubbing your chin you can then place the bottom plate back in place and close it up for now.

Yes, i cut a rectangle in the bottom just like in that pic. I already cut the can on one side, but lot further back than the weld line and then pried the sides out but that material is glued in and solid as a rock. Today i will try again, but damned if it's not a hell of a lot harder than it looked. Might be some are glued in tighter. And i really had to chew up the welds and cut large holes there because the wheel on the angle grinder is 4" and takes out a lot bigger area than i wanted. It's a bit of a mess.

EDIT: it's cut back 3" and the sides are fully pried away and that thing is rock solid. The only way to remove it will be to rip it out in chunks which will take a long tedious time. And while i might be willing to put that much effort in, thats about as far as id go before giving up. And since that would only be the 1/2 way point i'm done. Fucking waste of time and money. well, at least i didn't ruin my only cat trying this.

Looong shot here Daz, but seeing as how you have the material out now, do you think anything would disolve it? Save a lot of hassle if possible. I only ask this as in my industry we have been told that cats are coming in our petrol marine engines (already released in your country) and have been told that any contact with hot salt water will render the material useless.

No, the stuff is metal. But i screwed with it for a while later on and was able to finally pry it out. It was tedious as hell tho and i'm not looking forward to the other on. It also left the canister horribly disfigured. Not sure if i can even get this welded up with all the big holes in the outside from cutting thru to loosen the welds. All i can say is if i go to the trouble to do the other one and weld it, this motherfucker better be good !!!
