Daz,
Steve and I ended up doing exactly the same thing . I removed the cat , turned it upside down on a bench , with an angle grinder I cut 3 sides and peeled it back.
I got a large screwdriver and angled it so that when I belted it with a hammer , I was forcing the baffle material out. I sort of stuffed up the first one but the second came
out like a dream . I left the thin metal "channel" (my fucked up non-mechanical terminology) , got a mate who deals in stainless steel fabrication to weld the 3 cuts , and
now am as happy as a dog with 3 dicks !.
I have short TORS , a Triumph Sports Air Cleaner , I have removed the air vanes from the bottom of the seat and the rubber ring around the intake.
I am the slowest in the whole Flocking group in Oz , but I like the sound , I have not spent a mint , I am happy. As Maxxie has said on a lot of occasions ,
this bike will perform a whole lot better than the limit to which I will take it.
Mate .......just do it !

Daz.
On the picture you have you have a red arrow on the face of the cat material ,get a piece of cardboard and trace around that oval opening first ,then cut and remove the cat material, then reweld ,then use your tracing to trace onto a piece of perforated mesh, cut out this shape with some shears and weld it onto the mouth of the now empty cannister , this breaks up the exhaust flow and acts as a baffle to give a little back pressure, and you are ready to close up its bottom and reweld.
The noise is nowhere near as loud as the elbow bends that some are using.
I started with elbows and they were far to loud ,then I inserted some penny sized baffles in them to calm them down, ( a search of really old links will give you some photos) still too loud for me ,the gutting of the cat has made the sound ideal for me.
Cheers.
Steve

As you said earlier, it's hard to explain in text vs voice. So i really appreciate you taking the time Steve. Thanks ! I've got it now, and i believe i'm going to try this. May be a while tho, but eventually. I may even see if i can get a used cat to do this to. By the way, you say yours and magpies are done the same, and that you are running a TB tune, but do you know what tune magpie is running by chance?

short exhaust....

a few years ago I saw a rocket at windy corner ( no longer a triumph dealer) it used a Zard exhaust that Im sure would fit where our cat box is. its appearance was similar to a small compact vent each side of the bike.

looking on the zard site i think its the penta...

Those pipes are quite popular on R3's around here. I think the bird needs something a little longer but i like the idea.

Mick . . . Keep the rubber side down!!

Zard make a Tbird exhaust thats similar to a short TOR. The point of the thread tho was to have a shortie thats baffled like the stock long pipe so that people who don't like real loud to delete the cat and still have about the same volume as a short tor WITH cat. That way you'd have the advantages of being able to run no cat tunes (otherwise rich mixtures could poison and clog the cat) lose the weight of the cat, and have a not too loud tone that doesn't have that choking sound the cat imparts under higher revs. I guess i'm in the minority here, but it's why i'm thinking of doing that cat mod where you remove the cat material and replace it with a sort of baffle. That way i can use short tors and a less restrictive cat that is immune to poisoning.

Mate you'll have to bring the banjo to the next flocking, we can call you tune boy.

Hey, if you eyes are not spaced as far apart as your ears and you don't have an alcoholic prow for a forehead, the bike is as
easy to tune as a banjo. It is your Deliverance from mediocre power.
