I took the dual long haul seat off my TB today to clean and wax the rear fender. I was not happy to notice the cushions on the bottom of the passenger portion of the seat are rubbing circular marks in the clear coat. I've only had my bike for a few months so I can only imagine this will get worse over time and use. I sometimes like to ride with the solo seat and the rear fender exposed. I'm already upset with the marks in the paint and they won't buff completely out.

Has anyone else had this issue? If so, any suggestions for a remedy? I was thinking a protective film of some kind but would like to hear the experience of others who have used it. Thanks for the help.

Even the standard passenger seat does those marks. I am using a thick protective film, and as long as it doesnt wear trough then I assume . . . its OK

Yeah the marks are annoying when changing between dual longhaul & a single seat.
I started by trying a 3M film but it just looks like dogballs from a mile away (at least it does on my custom dark colour)

I eventually settled with a good thick coat of cunubra wax. You still get the marks from the rubber feet when removing the dual seat but a simple wipe & they are gone without any signs of paint wear damage at all.

Used same wax fix in conjunction with some electrical tape along stitching seams for the leather tank cover as well.

So far, so good but keeping a close eye on all possible paint friction wear spots on the bike.

I've actually mentioned this in a post a long time ago . This is a VERY bad design in my opinion . The T bird is a fine bike with a few annoying faults and this is one of them. I'm using about three layers of cloth bookbinding tape it seems to work . But I'm sure a few layers of duct tape would work , to take away the opportunity for friction between the rubber feet and the guard . How Triumph didn't foresee this problem and provide some kind of guard is beyond me

I am using 2 layers of some clear 3M tape and so far it seems to be working fine. Granted, I've only got about 300 miles of 2-up riding on the dual longhaul seat (with a rider's backrest), but a quick glance showed nothing had worn through. I think it is key to allow the rubber cushions to be able to move and flex freely in place (if that makes sense?).

This is a good thread to see how others are doing it and system works better than others.

I notice when I arrive at a typical rally all of the HD riders bow down down out of respect. My friend (an HD rider) says that I'm mistaken and that the HD guys are bending over to pick up rocks to throw at me. Thankfully, I have yet to be hit by a rock and if need be I can out run them all.

Try to use enough clear plastc discs to prevent the separate seat from moving around, this will stop grit getting between the rubber and the film which will also help, it's a piss poor design though.
Oxford do a rolls of platic film in various colours, just cut it to fit.

Mick . . . Keep the rubber side down!!

Thanks for the info. Anyone use a particular type or brand of protective film that they'd recommend? I'd like to use something that isn't obvious or leaves a residue.

I saw this thread prior to buying my bike, and noticed that the little circles starting to form when I took the seat off for the first time (bike only has 1500 miles on it). I waxed the fender with a couple of coats of good carnauba wax and they disappeared. Today I put the long haul seat back on, but I laid down some blue painters tape on the fender right where the rubber buttons touch the fender. If you're careful with the placement of the tape, it is barely visible, easy to remove, and should work just fine. Eventually the the rubber buttons may wear through, but I will keep an eye on it to make sure that doesn't happen.

I used this technique on the rear fender of my S83 for a 5 day trip once, since I didn't have a luggage rack and my roll bag sat on the fender. It worked great and you couldn't see the blue tape because the bag was sitting on top of it.

A bit late, but 3M is good.

I rode the Dragon a couple months ago with my wife. Highly recommended but next time I want to ride it solo. It is one hell of a beautiful and fun ride. TBird performed awesome...even riding two up.

I've been busy with work and getting ready to close on a new T-Bird stable (house!!). But I plan to mock up a SS "bracket" for the pillion similar to this "Kuryakyn for HD thingy"......

The idea would be to make the bracket "wide" enough to take all of the pillion support off of the fender. Then the pillion's "load/weight" would only be applied to the fender at a) forward bracket, and b) rear bolt interface.

And of course, use only knurled studs for quick, tool-less removal!!!!

Also, just as a heads up, I noticed with mine (after it was too late) that the seat bolt/screw that threads it to the rear fender has ripped a tiny hole into the seat. This is from mainly riding 2-up and is caused from the inside edges of the bolt where the hex/allen key goes. I now have a piece of black duct tape that I keep over the bolt to prevent it from riping any further, seems to have worked but like I said, I was a little late.....Just a heads up for those who have this seat and ride 2-up.
