Any one else have issues getting the Stock Gas cap off the tank? I have to carry around a pair of gloves with a grippy/tacky palm to be able to remove the cap when it's time for petrol and even then it is quite difficult. Just wondering if I have a bad cap or if this is just a lousy design.

I'd say you have a bad cap. Never heard of such a thing and mine comes off easy.

New'ish bike right ?

Do a Google search for Thunderbird fuel tank cap

See how many searches come up for exactly the same thing....its a well known issue for new birds
- smear *very thin* O'Ring grease
- Take cap off , put cap on (repeat 25 times)
- never do the cap up until the ratchet clicks

or

take cap off, throw away , buy billet cap

I got my T-bird June 1st. It was hard to get the gas cap off for a week or two but eventually it got easier. My 07 America had the same problem for a few weeks too. I've found eventually the cap wore in....

I had the same problem with the fuel cap. It also starts to scratch the tank where you try to undo it all the time.

You could try fast eddy for a different type you just replace the metal section of the cap.

Like this one with grip, he also has others.

+1 with Woody. I had similar issues early on, but eventually "broke in". Would periodically have it "uber-tight" though. So I put on the "smooth black" cap like Woody. It's made by Joker, but I got mine through Fast Eddy as well.

Long known issue. Rubber gasket is a bit sticky from the factory. It gets better.

The first time I went for gas, I couldn't get it off no matter what, luckily I had a gallon left - I've got XXL hands and long strong fingers, and with or without gloves, no dice. Had to go home and eventually resort to a super sized vice grips wrapped around a rag. I Didn't fully tighten it for a couple of weeks, and then found it much more pliable. At 2 months now, it's more normal. Weird stuff...

Thanks for all the input, I'll probably give it a few more weeks and see if it loosens up, else I'll get a billet cap from Eddy. Had it 2 and a half weeks and just hit 1200 miles so 'i've put 6 or 7 tanks through it and it's still pretty tight. Seems like something Triumph would want to address, not exactly a glowng impression of your new bike when your standing at the pump cussing because the cap won't open.

Apply a thin coating of oil on the rubber gasket in the cap. That's what I had to do when I first bought my bird. After awhile,it'll loosen up. Dave!!

I replaced mine (which I never had any problem with, btw) with a Triumph OEM locking gas cap and have had no problems with it. I had read of the problem so was dreading that first fill-up, but my stock one was fine from the beginning. Lucky, I guess.

I'm having the same issue with my stock cap. Glad to hear it loosens up after a while. I'll also try some of the remedies posted here to see if they help.

I went to fill up yesterday and about couldn't get the cap off (again!). I'm going to order a new one this weekend and hopefully put this issue behind me. Any recommendations guys?

Well out of the normal range available options I personally feel ,
the standard OEM normal & locking versions look 'ok' but obviously are a PITA.
Although I do like billet style in general...... I think it sticks way out of place on a bird too abrasive for the flowing curves
Aviation style...wayyyyyy cool ... on a Jap racer only IMO
The ever increasing popular pop-up style look cool, but would only take a single time to not function flawlessly stick & I would 'hulk out' in middle of the servo (gas station) terrifying children in adjacent vehicles in the process.

I really do like the mock monza styling, suits classic lines of bird & just has that 'English' feel about it. Pity it is not real monza functional though (flip back & spin handle)

The best part about the petrol cap on the T'Bird is that, like the modern Bonnevilles, when you put the 'bike on its side-stand, the cap is perfectly level and hence a great place to put your coffee cup.

I'm glad that I read this thread. My bike is still to all intents and purposes brand new. I've only filled the tank twice and as yet no issues in taking the cap off. But having seen this I've siliconed the seal ring. So I'm now not expecting any problems ... we'll see.

Havnt seen a gas cap hard to get off issue for a year or so heheheh.

What used to be the issue was overturning the cap meening a vacume seemed to form when the fuel went down in the tank. The way to cure that in the "old days" was when you put the cap back on you would tighten it so it only clicked once and no more when putting it back on. Turn until it got to the ratchet bit then turn until it clicks once then leave it.

Hi there from Australia.I had this problem and it was quite frustrating.Take the cap off and look underneath.Make sure the little white vent is working.Work it up and down with a small screwdriver or whatever.Mine was seized up and this will cause your problem.I got a Joker cap from Eddy but probably didn,t need to.Looks cool though.Cheers from OZ.

Geees Boys
Use a bit of rocket science like Swagger did. Give it a spary with some silicone and all the tightness goes away. Marvelous stuff that Silicone Spary.

***SOLUTION***

I have experienced the same issue. As an engineer, I solved the problem.

Replace the seal with an o-ring!

1-7/8" OD x 1-1/2" ID x 3/16" W

Material: Nitrile (to resist the gasoline)
