I'm closing in on buying a Sprint ST as an east coast bike. I've found a promising looking one for sale close to where it will be garaged.

Anyone here familiar with them? Potential problems etc. It has 60,000km on it. Any info or opinions would be gratefully received.

Recently sold an 04 955 ST. Nice bike that did everything well from a scratch round the hills to a bit of touring. Good two up when you sort out the suspension adjustment. Great front brakes although my rear was a bit wooden.
Loved the donk which pulled like a train and was very linear in its power delivery. The 99 has the earlier donk with a different clutch set-up, an oil sight glass, (not on later donk), and about 8 hp down on the model I had. Triumph moved the clutch to the other side of the donk and beefed it up supposedly. Unsure if the earlier type had issues.
Power wise you would not notice the difference as my mates 99 was as quick.( I had about 30kgs on him though). We both had K&N air filters, TOR cans plus tunes to suit. Suspension will be tired if original as I was contemplating work at 30,000Ks just before sale. Check the rear wheel hub bolt that is loosened to allow adjustment of the concentric chain adjuster. Easy to strip.
Best tyres were Metzler Z6 front and rear if you end up buying it.
Try to ascertain any oil consumption as the odd one would have dramas with the cylinder linings from manufacture. Usually not bad oil use but constant and pain if doing a lot of Ks. Check pipe by running finger around inside of exhaust can for excessive oil type deposits. Put hand near pipe on start up to see if you get any splats of black shit on your hands.
All in all good bikes that are very capable and suprisingly quick in the right hands. Would still have mine but too many regos.

Thanks for the comments and the links. That it compares well to the VFR in the linked reviews is pretty positive.

I've asked a friend of mine over there to check it out and passed on to him the items you recommended checking. Now I'm just sitting here waiting for him to e-mail me his opinion of it. I'm hoping it's going to be a positive report.

I have a 2000 speedtriple (same engine) and think its fantastic, one thing to look out for is they have a small radiator capacity so if you find the fan comming on a lot, back flush the radiator and make sure there are no air locks in the coolant system. Apart from that I have had no problems at all with mine and dont know of any. They may not make the same power as a Jap equivelant but what they do have is lower dow the rev range and is therefore more acesible more of the time which makes it more relaxing to ride with more grunt on tap without chasing it through the box. Enjoy

Mick . . . Keep the rubber side down!!

Thanks for the comments and info about the radiator Mjgt.

The report from my friend in Tasmania was positive so it's looking promising. Unfortunately those east coast slackers have a public holiday on monday so negotiations with the bike shop will have to wait for tuesday.

had one since new, sold it with 60,000 on it to buy the TBird. Great bike, fast economical...cruising 70-75 got 50 mpg!!!Only issue was a leak in radiator at around 45,000, found a used one and solved the problem. be aware many St radiators won't fit, be sure it is for the 99 model year. Gave it up cause i am too old to be getting speeding tickets, would cruise at 85-90 and feel like 60mph. Get it!

Well, It's a done deal. I bought the bike. In the end it just seemed too good an opportunity to pass up. Down side is that the first time I'll get to see it, let alone ride it, will probably be November Ohh, well. Something to look foreward to.

That's a long time to wait for a bike. It will be worth it though. To tide you over, here's a pic of my 2001 Sprint ST.

Thanks for that Thumperama

I'm currently trying to sort out the teething problems with buying an older bike long distance. The fuel gauge has apparently died in the hands of the guy looking after it for me. It packed it in the first time he refueled it. Also one of the mirrors flops all over the place at speed. Oh well, I think we will have it sorted by November

Meanwhile I have the GT here to keep me happy.

I actually had gone down to the dealer to look at the GT when I fell in love with the Thunderbird. Never did ride the GT. I still need to do that.

The fuel gauges on the older Sprints were junk and I know several that have removed them and replaced them with a Whistler motorcycle radar detector. The readout fits perfectly in the space. The low fuel light still works with the fuel gauge missing, so you still get some warning when you need to refuel.

The mirrors are another often replaced item on the older Sprints. Mine still seem to be holding up pretty well after 11 years. They usually get replaced with newer versions (like those on your GT) or with ones from Honda VFR's of similar vintage.
