Just today, I noticed at 55mph the speedo was bouncing up and down a bit. At 50 or less- nothing. At 60 or higher, nothing. Kind've wierd- never saw that last year. May go in to have it looked at. I've got 1100 miles.

Mine was sticking from new and so was my dealers demo bike

They the dealer contacted Triumph UK and were given a fix for it something like
turning the key on and off 200 times whilst standing on your head with your left arm
outstreched only to be done on a full moon but it seems to have worked

Sorry about the lateness of the reply Rabbit...roads to ride No fix for the speedo, it hasn't done it since. I have 5K on the odo.
I'm told one came in stuck at 180kph lol...Coolant leak, I tightened it up carefully when cool and that fixed most of it but there is still a minor leak. It's going in for the cross over pipe next week and I'm hoping we can do something then

Hi Keets
Triumph are going to change speedo under warranty, they fixed leaks (hose clamps) but it started leaking again last week .

They are fitting BB kit from today so they will fix whatever theleak is then, the mechanic works on Triumph race engines and is going to see what he can do to treak the motor a bit more also dyno-ed the bike pre and will dyno again after BB fitted

Guess I will join this elite group. Speedo started reving high and sticking yesterday. Cruising along at 40 mph and speedo showed 90 mph and later stuck on 60 mph even after the bike was shut down. It stayed on 60 quite a while no matter what speed I was going. Back to the shop !

Dealer has repaired the speedo for now. No real problem was found. They checked the connections and reset it. After 200 more miles it is OK for now.

Mine alternately stops and start working every 20-30 miles and then when it does work the needle always drops to zero when i pull the clutch. Lucky it did this for the techie guy too.
The techie at the Triumph dealer in New Hampshire (I think there is only one dealership in the state) spent 3 hours
on the problem
and couldn't fix it. The entire visit took 9 hours. nice guys there though.

He swapped another instrument assembly in and the problem remained the same.
He thinks it may be the wiring harness. He was getting unusual pin reading.

He has to get permission from Triumph (to assure warranty payment to them) before he can proceed.

They were constantly looking very closely to see if any MOD of any sort could be the reason for the failure. It was scary cause
those 3 hrs would have been x $95/hr.
The only mods I had were battery tender and flashing brake lights and he was o.k. with those.

Some what surprisingly, he wouldn't accept my assertion that the speedo goes out completely, because didn't observe it during his short test ride.

So now I wait for Triumph to return their calls.

Interesting, they said they don't get paid by Triumph for those shop hours if they don't fix the problem. Which explains the reluctance of the Vermont dealer to even work on the bike.

My speedo starting "sticking" shortly after I took delivery. Even after I turned the bike of, it would read 80 of 100km/h. Never bothered me that much as i would use the Tacho as a guide instead.
Interesting what others are saying about coolant leaks thou. I do my own servicing and when I did the first service on it at around 800km,, I noticed the coolant manifold bolts were loose and one was only hanging on by a couple of threads. (good pre-delivery check)so i tightened all those bolts, completed the first service and was on my way. The speedo never stuck again. I didnt think anything of it until I read this thread and noticed coolant leaks seem to be a common thing with sticking speedos!!

Well my Speedo has been working again for over a week now (only about 300 miles) and the scheduled repair time is 3 days away.
I'll be canceling it. I can't see how they can fix a problem that doesn't present itself.

That depends. If the problem is intermittent and in the unit (speedo) itself and they plan to change the speedometer cluster, I would let them.

I also have the dreaded sticking Speedo , with only about 400 miles on the bike. Called the dealer (Street Cycles in Falmouth, Maine) and explained the problem in detail. Sticks and holds like many on this thread have described. They called Triumph and where told it was a KNOWN issue that was caused by heat, particularly if the speedo is in direct sun. They will be getting a new speedo and it will be replaced under warranty. Just thought it was interesting to get a variety of responses from dealers on this thread. Maybe they have just recognized it as a "KNOWN" issue?

Hope this helps some of you who are having the same issue.

Me too. Bought in April, now has 3500 miles, been sticking intermittently the whole time. Seems to be related to heat. Had the dealer "diagnose" it, and his "diagnosis" is that it sticks and that Triumph is looking for a solution. (Funny....I already figured that out.)

I don't plan to squawk about it too much until the season is over. But Triumph is aware of it. The solution will be a redesigned instrument cluster, I'm sure, which will cost them a packet. I expect some serious foot-dragging on their part.

Does anybody else wish they'd skipped the Harley-esque tank clock and mounted gauges on the bars? That's the only major styling issue I have with the bike. Glad they skipped the V-twin temptation, but they gave in to the Harley look with the instruments. How ironic that it's coming back to bite them, eh? BE WHO YOU ARE, Triumph! There is already a Harley Davidson and a million different clones.

The Fat Boy tank is a bit much too, but I like the range it gives me so I'm OK with it.

dislike the speedo on the tank intensly, the r3 has some wonderful looking chrome almost teardrop looking meters that fit just above the headight/handlebars, wish list for me.

Couldn't give a rats about the gauges location as I only look at them once or twice during a ride as it is. I do like that they are off the bars and give a clean look.

As for it being a 'Harley thing' Triumph has had tank mounted gauges for years both Hinckley and Meridian. That argument rings as true as the comments that the bird is a Harley clone for the simple fact that it's a cruiser.

Now, is that to say I wouldn't be interested in another form for the tbird as well? not a chance. I hope in the next couple years they release another version of the bird or at least another 1600 based bike. I'd welcome the addition.

can i change my wish list to a land where i can ride free without the need to look at the speedo
where no yellow sided boxes live to treat me like a celebrity
where little minded men in blue are non existent and nothing disrupts my extasy of flight.

to ride on "thatches" roads....

Oh it's not that I'm ridin' full throttle the whole time, I just find it pretty easy to know what speed I'm going by the sights and sounds during the ride where looking at the speedo isn't needed.

but you are right, I don't have to deal with those devil boxes you do. US cops generally give you at least a 10 mph grace before writing you up. (or course they are using unmarked cars more and more these days ... )

Dealer told me that Triumph will have a "solution" for the speedo in a few weeks. Has anyone else heard anything? Am I /They just being stroked with this answer. At this point I am happy to have it documented.

I find that when the tears run down backwards at 45 degrees it's about 50 kmph!
It's when they run backwards at 70 degrees to horizontal that it's time to watch out of those cameras....

Hi Guys, Yep, I got the speedo blues too, mine was one of the first over here to do it, Waiting for triumph to replace it with the updated unit when they come out, no probs since the weather has cooled down but i have no doubt it will return when things warm up....Wont cost triumph much at all, the units will all go back to the supplier/manufacturer, ouch theres gonna be a lot of em but then maybe they should have been tested properly in the first place..cheers all, Tadpole

I had the speedo problem as well. I did a full documentation of it, taking pictures of the problem with the speedo sitting at 55mph while parked in front of a gas pump, etc. I even managed to show the problem to the dealer as a witness, so when I had them fix it, they got a new speedo from Triumph and installed that. This is a semi-common problem, and there have been a number of folks out there experiencing it.

Frankly, for a first year model bike, if this is the only major problem with it I think they have done an excellent job.

for a first year bike there are actually very few problems. seems like this and the coolent leak are the only real issues
