After numerous reviews of exhaust options, I have ended up going with the Short TOR mufflers and TOR tune. I had already had a high flow K&N installed. From my perspective, the bike has a little more tone at idle, sounds pretty mean under hard acceleration, pops some on decel and seems to have a smoother power band. On my service paperwork it says the loaded 020306 tune witch I assume is the TOR tune. To me (seat of paints) it seems like I've lost some bottom end but the bike likes to be revved more. Does this sound about right for my setup or am I missing something? I kinda expected a stronger bottomend with the short TOR's but that is not what I am getting. Any comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

run it for a while first as it will adapt then see how it settles,
you will notice a better top end as it revs/breathes better.

Thanks zolti, I'll have some patience and see how it pans out. It makes sense that with it breathing better it would rev and pull harder in the higher rpm range. It doesn't in anyway feel down on power, the power band just seems to be much broader. Thanks again for your feed back!

hey rihoncye, i have the same setup but haven't had my first service so i haven't got to the topend yet but it seems
to me that the top of the motor is a little rattlely or something, are you hearing any difference in the motor?
i'm coming off a America and the engines sound totally different so maybe its just me.

I assume it's a 1600 in which case thats the proper tune assuming it doesn't have SAI. When mine was a 1600 i got long tors and the bike ran like crap till i had the tune put in. Maybe they used the wrong tune or lied to you or whatever, but that doesn't sound right. I later got the short tors and with the proper tune it made a very considerable difference in the entire powerband. Theres definately something thats not right if you feel any loss at all, or even any area of the power band thats the same as before the tors. Best thing to do is get tuneecu and that way you aren't at your dealer's mercey and don't have to take his word on this. Plus you can try loading tunes yourself. If you aren't familair with it, it's an app you install on a PC/laptop that allows you to read the tune in your bike, alter it, load different ones, check what is wrong when the bike's malfunction light goes on, balancce your throttle bodies, and more. It's free. Just need a PC and the cable and driver to connect it to the bike. Very easy and simple. tuneecu.com

Theres also a page of all the triumph tunes to download there for most bikes including all the stock tunes for the 1600 and 1700.

Just put the short TORs on mine as well (had the dealer do it actually while it was in for it's initial servicing). I can't even quantify how much better these pipes sound over the stock ones, but I'm curious to see if I notice any added performance. I do not have a high flow air filter (still stock)...yet. Thought I'd try one performance upgrade at a time to get a feel for what really makes the most notable difference.

After I put a few miles on my bike with the new pipes, I'll let you all know what I find. Oh, and one more thing...the short TORs LOOK as good as they SOUND! Really gives the bike a sporty look. My wife did mention however that I need to get the swing arm covers to hide the rear wheel bolts...I love that woman!

I agree, the short TORs sound awesome, and look great too. I have the Storm, and opted for the swing arm cover when I bought the bike with the pipes, really cleans up the back end IMO.

I feel I may have jumped the gun on my initial post and maybe just got some bad fuel. I immediately got fuel after picking up my bike from a station right next to the dealer. Just a theory but after running a few tanks the bike seems to have come around. Pulls much harder and even sounds better. I don't know but I'm pleased with how it's running now. On a separate note about fuel, are most people running regular 87 octane or do you run premium 91 octane?

could be fuel as this will have an effect, some of my mates swear by shell V or BP. they say avoid tesco.

but id put some of it to the bike settling and "adapting" itself to the new settinngs you had installed.
i found this after remapping mine.
I didnt bother resetting the tps or doing the 12 min adaption as I decided after reading the manual bit that the bike would adapt itself as it travelled, and it was much more fun riding it than sitting there fiddling and waiting.

I may be wrong here but there a lot more petrol stations than refineries in the UK so most get their petrol from the same distributor as I cannot see petrol made in a refinery for BP in scotland is going to drive it all the way south to Plymouth if they can just pop into the local Shell refinery. They do it with food so why not petrol which means Tesco probably gets its pertol from the same refinery that BP and /or Shell do.
Just a thought

Volti, I going with either fuel or adapting either way the bike runs like dream now. I though maybe fuel because my dealer is in a bad area of Kansas City, there's a Citco station right next to the dealer. I usually try to run BP, Shell or Philips 66. Come to think of it, they probably fill up their bikes there but going from a 900 Vulcan to the Bird they could have put Captain Morgan in the tank and I'd still be happy with the power difference. I think from my experience with bikes, they seem to be far more sensitive to fuel than say a car and you can feel a difference. What ever it was, I had about a week or so that I wasn't completely impressed to now having a bike that runs like a raped ape throughout it's intire power band! Conclusion: Short TOR's and a Highflow Filter ROCK!!!!!!!! This will keep me happy for a while. When I find myself needing more it will be time for the BB kit Thanks all for your comment.

I never bother either. Download and ride - that's my motto .

Also, even tho the pipes are double walled is is possible to brown or blue them if the bike is idling for too long on a hot day - or sold I' e been told...

I put my short TORs on tonight. They sound great and the bike runs awesome without adding the TORS tune (by awesome I means it runs that same as with the stock pipes). I was thinking I would see some power lag but have not. I took it in for its first service over the weekend and it ran the same....except it stalled in first a couple of time coming off the line. Kind of like the idle was too low. Once I installed the TORs, it wasn't doing it as much. I can't wait to see how it runs once I put the tune on it....I feel power gains now without the tune. I think I am going to have to black it out though.

The one thing I don't like about them is that is exposes some steel on the rear that the long piples uses to hide. I wonder if they make a cover for it?

Triumph do a cover for the swingarm in chrome, and I think black as well.

Kirk... I bought a 'bird with Tors already installed and for me it creates a different ride compared to stock exhausts. The Tors sound great under acceleration but I feel more vibration and it appears (to me) that there is more drag through 2500 to 4000 rpm. I rode my friend's bird last night and his bike with stock pipes seems smoother and more responsive. I am trying to tell myself that the feel of my bike is due to the tors and remap required to fine tune the flow of air. I agree that the bottom end seems to strain a little.
Have you had any other comments or advice on the matter?

Satch - saw your post in the other thread, and then this one. It just dawned on me. Do you have the high flow air filter?? Either Triumph, K&N or Uni?? When I went to the Short TOR and TOR map, I added the filter and mine's smooth as butter. They're relatively cheap and reusable.

Satch

I did notice a little more vibration after installing the TOR's and even more after I removed the cat. Not so much that you can't see out your mirrors like a Harley but enough that I could feel a difference in my hands and feet. I agree with Jamie on the hi-flow air filter, you've opened up the exhaust and now she needs more air. I got the K&N filter. I think it's about $55.00. Well worth it, you'll never need to buy another filter for the bike and I think you'll notice a difference.

Kirk... thanks much... I just purchased a KN hi-flow filter and will have dealer install and remap. But here is the thing... the symptoms I am experiencing are rapid and excessive heat in the crankcase; knocking and popping on decel; excessive buzz and vibration throughout the machine; rapping in the cat box like a monkey tapping drums; engine feels like it is "pulling back" through throttle rpm acceleration... This can only mean that the previous owner slapped on the TORS and didn't remap so now I am running very lean. I am no expert but I think these are classic signs of a engine looking for fuel. In the meantime I am having my valves checked as well as part of the 12K checkup. But I think the re-tune along with the new hi flow filter should set me up sweet.
Thanks

This tune 20306 is for 1600, TORs, and SAI. Unless you have a 2010, you don't have SAI. My stock tune for 1700 and TORs is about the smoothest I've ever had, having never owned a Honda. Maybe not the most possible power but smooth as silk.

My dealer said to run 91. I ran 87 on a R3 for 8 years and it was fine. The Bird has 1 more point of compression. There's only one real way to test this and that's on a Dino.

Satch1961, sorry to just now be responding, haven't been on the site in a while. Hope you got things sorted out with your Bird by this
point. I have not experienced some of the things you mentioned other than the decel pop however, I do know that too lean is not a good thing. Hopefully a new tune got you squared away.
