I want a better power solution for my ram-mounted gps than the god forsaken "lighter" outlet I was using before. The thing shook loose throughout the trip and the power saver message kept popping up on the gps.
What has everyone else tried for this?
Thanks,
Jason

There's little hole in the cradle where you can put the connector when gps is not attached. Has worked like a charm since then. Cable would have been easier to install if tank was removed but managed to tie it to the frame with tank on.
Edit : Forgot to mention, my gps is Garmin Nuvi 550. Waterproof and bright enough even in direct sunlight.

The mount fixes to the bars and is hard wired (mine into the headlamp) and the waterproof GPS unit just clips in and out of the mount. The TomTom is probs not the best of GPS but the bike system works great.

i got a fused usb charger and ran it from the parking light, housed in a laser cut bracket between the cable tidies near the cnetre of the headlight ( spotted that positioning point on mats bike ) used usb as it can charge a variety of things. ram bolts to house the gps.

I have a powerlink power adapter for my TomTom. Works fine, have it wired directly to the battery.

Sorry we don't recommend your wussy GPS for motorcycle use, go piss off.
Thanks a lot.
In any case, I kept looking and found this...
and this...
This is the company. Link I figured that it was worth a shot, and at the very least, adding a usb plug on the bike can charge anything from phone, to ipod, and obviously my gps.
I will report back.

Then I ran a cigar lighter/aux plug to the battery, I have a plug in Belkin USB socket that pushes into the aux plug when/if needed. Also the aux direct to the battery means that I can use an emergency light etc if all fails.

| Posted : 15 May 2012 - 00:47 Post title : Re: Hard Wiring GPS (Re: jason0019) | | I've just finished hard wiring my gps onto my 2012 storm. Had the intention of wiring it to the accessory socket which in my case is a 20 amp fuse, until I realised this was not an ignition switched fuse. ie. it was constantly live. Ended up tapping into fuse #9 (horn, brake switch. 10 amp) Very easy to lift tank and loom it neatly. Dont worry about not having part # blah blah to hold the tank up, I just used a piece of wood. Have not taken it for a test ride yet as it is bucketing down for the next day or two, but should be fine. One thing I have noticed is the fuel gauge, upon reconnecting the instument panel, is not registering the amount of fuel in the tank. I am hoping this will correct itself during my next ride.
