| Posted : 30 Mar 2012 - 14:48 Post title : Phone mount options?? | | Hey guys...not sure if this has been asked/answered before, so apologies for any duplication. I've got a Droid X cell phone, which doubles as my GPS. Anyone got any recommendations on a good, clean mount for it? Preferrably on bars between the risers, so it's front and center when in GPS mode. Right now I stuff it inside my jacket pocket or clip it to my belt, but having been "down" once, looking for a safer alternative.
Thanks, Jamie
EDIT - not looking to use the phone while riding (bluetooth or not)...just for GPS'ing around, and not stuffing it in my pocket, etc.

The problem you'll run into on these sort of cases is that the plastic screen (which is needed for waterproofing) tends to buckle a bit and make the screen a bit hard to read. The other issue is that your Droid X is a capasitive touch screen which means it needs that electrical circuit between your finger and the screen to work. The plastic makes this a bit flaky. It tends to still work, but it's a bit fiddly. Of course you shouldn't be messing with it while rolling anyway, and your gloves would do that even worse so it's not that big of an issue. A resistive screen would be much better but those are pretty much only on low end (and military grade) products these days.
I only have the thing mounted up on long rides, local stuff I use a map or if I'm in a hurry, my phone in a pocket with an earbud in.

Go to ram mount. They have mounts for everything. I have a mount for my GPS, Phone, and radar detector. good stuff.

I agree with you as far as using it as a phone, hell I already have her yacking at me from the back through the intercom.

I have a Garmin Zumo mounted on the center of the handlebars about 4 or 5 inches higher. That's what I use for a speedo too. It's exactly where a conventional speedo and tach would be and much safer than trying to loo down on the tank.

There must be a setting to lock it into either Portrait or Landscape. I haven't found it yet and the lean of the bike confuses the gyros. That's distracting. I also have it under a 2x magnifier (Ram accessory) Hey, I'm old.

Geez, Feduke...quit yelling at me. Got enough of that from my ex! Seriously, though...only plan to use it for GPS functions when on long trips. Otherwise it'll be going in a small fork bag (yet to be purchased) as I don't want too much crap in my pockets in the event of an "incident". Heard too many stories of guys getting jabbed/stabbed/impaled by crap they had in their pockets, even in a reasonably minor accident.

You're right. That's not my place to do. Send me your ex's phone number so I can give her a call and let her know what to yell about.
I guess I never thought about the pocket thingie. You're right though. I'm not concerned with pocket contents but, if I landed there I could have a really bad injury from blunt trauma!

(Re: DizzE) | | You can only lock iPhones in portrait (one of their many flaws) - double click the Home button & you get the recently used apps along the bottom, swipe it rightwards, almost to the end and you'll see a grey, square tool with a clockwise arrow. Tap it and it locks the screen. Took me weeks to work it out.

But it wouldn't fit into that case they make, for weatherproofing. Clean look when not in use, too...remove one allen screw and the main mount remains on the bars. Pretty nice...maybe a ziploc sandwich bag over my current phone/clip for bad weather

(Re: bnz433) | | I use my phone sat nav (copilot) all the time in a bracket in the car, so I've just bought this mount for my Samsung S2. Seems ideal, you can even angle it up on the ball socket if you want to video your route. I also ordered 2 spare batteries and a charger for £12, that should last me for a few days.
Handy to have your phone nearby and much cheaper than a bike satnav.

Still searching...but thanks for all of the ideas. Ideally, I'd like something that can go from bike to belt-clip, but that may be a bit much to ask for
