Hi all

I've recently bought a new big bore Thunderbird. One of the accessories I have had fitted is the roadster screen (part number a9741023). It is supposed to be quick release but I couldn't get it off without taking the screws out. Yesterday I took it back to the dealer for it's 500 mile service and they couldn't get it off either. It seems either the top bolts are too large or the spring clips are too tight. They've ordered another one to see if it's just that screen but I wondered if anybody else had experienced this problem and perhaps found a way round it?

Thanks

Welcome, it's been discussed before, but you're not to know. The 2 sprung latches at the top of the catches are easily lifted to help persuade the screen to come off (you may need 3 hands), also the position of yourself helps; two feet either side of the front wheel and hold the screen about 300 mm above the latches and give it a good, confident yank. It does take courage but it gets easier.

Some folk on here have mentioned the large recessed washers that take the latch have been fitted the wrong way around, making it a tight fit.

This might not help and you've probably already tried it (there isn't any instructions for the screens themselves, only the fitting kit):

PS I'm in Nottingham tomorrow for a Gentleman's Day of Culture, with some mates. It's my birthday, although we'll be bikeless 'cos of the nature of the day. If you can get the bike down to the Trip/Poacher/Orange Tree/Bell Inn/Fellows M&C/Vat & Fiddle between the hours of 12 & 5, I'll be willing to give a Masterclass in screen removal. I don't advise letting me try after the first 2 establishments though. On the other hand, perhaps you only need a few pints for success.

Hi thanks for that Ted. Unfortunately I can't get to Nottingham tomorrow afternoon as I've got a meeting I can't get out of. I'll have a go again myself now I know that it should come off with a bit of brute force. Shame it hasn't got a lever like the Rocket.

You asked this in another thread and I don't think anyone answered... well, at least not in a serious way. Anyway... I've NEVER heard of anyone being offended with the term, "Yank" or "Yankee" (The New York Yankees {baseball team} are VERY popular). We Americans have pretty thick skins... oh, except when it comes to abortion, guns, religion, politics, taxes and um, the size of our cocks

Don't call anyone south of the Mason-Dixon line a Yankee. It is definitely meant as an insult in the South. I mean, I personally don't care, but some redneck may pop you in the mouth.

Yeah, you've not spent much time in the South have you? You don't want to be calling a good ol' boy a Yankee. However, said with a British accent and especially if only the shortened 'Yank' is used the vast majority take no offence. We know you don't know any better.

I dated a girl in Hattiesburg, Mississippi (drove down there from Denver every other weekend... yeah, nuts, but the sex was worth it ) and hung out a fair bit with a few of her redneck friends (but I guess she preferred MY redneck friend better )... it NEVER even occurred to me to call any of them "Yankees".

Hi Ian,

I had the same issue with my screen, as advised by a member of this Forum. Just grab a 4mm allen key and rotate all 4 rollers on the brackets 180 degrees. It's a 2 min job and it works, don't know why but it does. It's very easy to put on and off. I just place my hands just below the curve of the screen a slight pull towards myself and up. It used to be a pain in the arse to do, now very little effort is required.

Regards,

Tony

Thanks Tony. Like you say, can't see how it would work as they look to be completely circular but anythings worth a try, particularly when recommended by somebody that has found it works.

Hi Ian,

There is a difference with the rollers if reversed, if you have a look at the rollers you'll know what I mean.

Tony

You got lots of answers before I saw this, but they are good answers. Nah, we don't care and most people, north or south, when they heard your accent would know exactly what you were saying. And Yank and Yankee are two completely different things. A Yankee is a kind of nasty term for a northerner if you're in the south, but most "Yankees" would laugh at it today and maybe even call themselves a Yankee in the south. Yank is pretty much a term bloody foreigners use unless you're discussing "yanking" on something to give yourself pleasure (see Nabisco's post above.)

We're pretty hard to insult that way and would probably start laughing if someone used most any term like that.

But thanks for asking you bloody limey!

Tried turning the rollers round today Tony but it made no difference. Works fine if they are loose but as soon as I tighten them the screen wont go on or come off, it seems as though the brackets aren't going in perpendicular to the rollers. Triumph are sending me out a new screen and fittings set to try.

Oak, I've reversed my rollers and it helped a bit, but regardless of the roller direction the screen doesn't come off unless I grab it towards the top. It's that way for many. Pushing back on usually requires a few quick pushes. Once you have it figured out its not so bad.

Thanks mate, the new screen might not make a difference but I have become increasing bold at pulling at this one from various angles and it just wont budge. It will just about go on if you hit it repeatedly and hard with the heel of your hand but off it will not come. The strange thing is, if you loosen the screws right off it pops on and off the rollers relatively easily. The brackets just seem to go in at the wrong angle. Its not costing me anything to try another screen, so I will report back whether it makes a difference.

Wont surprise me to find that the screen is defective, I haven't had the best of luck. I had to have it recovered the first day because it was leaking water (loose pipes), parked it on a Toy Run and came back to find a scratch on the tank and went to use the Optimate yesterday but found that there was an internal wiring fault with the fitted lead to the battery (even though red was to red etc the Optimate indicated reverse polarity). Easy enough to replace but a bit annoying.

Cheers
Ian

I have the SE model which came from the factory with the removeable windscreen. However, like many others using this windscreen,I too could NOT get it off either unless I loosened the screws that hold those four little bushings in place on the chrome mounts. To make a long story short, two of the four mounting bushings, where the windscreen brackets slip into, were on backwards. In other words, the brackets on the shield did not line up with the little grooves in the bushings. The thick part of those bushings has to be facing inwards and the thin part facing outwards. And then I had to add a thin washer behind each of the two top bushings so the windscreen would line up correctly. Now she pops right on and off with very little effort. The last time I was at the dealership,I noticed another SE model on the floor which also had those bushings on backwards and brought it to the owners attention. Now whether they changed em or not,I don't know. But atleast I pointed it out to him as I'm bringing it to your attention too.So ya might wanna check em as they're probably on backwards too.Plus you may or maynot have to add a thin washer on each side.So check the mounting brackets on the shield to see if they line up with the windshield mounting bushings on the chrome mounts.Good luck.Dave!!!

Thanks Dave, I had already tried reversing them with no change (although I could see that they aligned sligtly better). If the new screen is no better I will try your washer idea.

The trick is to do what ever needs to be done in order to get the windscreen brackets lined up with those mounting bushings.Once ya get that right, the shield will go on and come off easy. Dave!!!

I just give mine a good "yank" from the top, and it comes right off. I was worried that I might break it at first, but it seems pretty substantial. It should be tight. You don't want it rattling around when you're on the freeway. You really have to give a good.... yank though. I installed mine myself, and the fit is very tight.
Now I'm from the northwest, and a "yankee" to us, is just a over-popular baseball team. I spent 3 years in Louisiana, and it's almost like a different country down there.

Well just to update you, the new screen arrived just before Christmas so I tried to fit it yesterday. Unbeliveably, for what I assume is a fairly mass produced item, one of the two bottom brackets had been manufactured too small to accomodate the roller. I even removed the roller and offered it up to the screen, definately too small. I've still to try the washer idea but I think I am now resigned to just loosening the screws when I want to remove it.

Thanks again for all of your suggestions.
