Their OS is more bullet proof, but drive are drives. Some are better than others, but after a few years any can fail.

Even the solid state drives have issue unless you ate willing to pay the price for SLC memory. Most are MLC, which was designed for mp3 playback where an occasional error does not matter.

Last count of Linux malware I'm aware of (2006) was 863. Link
He had a drive fail - they all fail, sooner or later - in fact, it's a wonder they work at all, given the tolerances and mechanisms involved.
The advice to clone all data to a backup drive is good advice, especially if it's a bootable backup. Minimum hassle and downtime, no mystery.
