Having suffered for long enough with a cheap Caberg Helmet that mists up, no matter what I do with it, I am now looking for my Christmas Present.

I would like a flip front helmet, with internal sun visor, and pinlock for the main visor.

Anyone got any suggestions what to try?

So far I am thinking about the Schuberth C3, but I am not finding good reports out there about it, especially the visor closing at low speeds, and misting / vision problems in heavy rain. Any experiences you guys have would be appreciated.

Last year, a tarmac/helmet interface caused me to consider another helmet. I'd had the Arai for 5 years anyway, and I'd been very happy with it - very comfy, good visor fit but a bastard to replace, good vision & well ventilated, bit noisy though. I fancied a flip-up and developed a lust for a C3, so I set forth clutching my pocket money. I've worn a few different helmets over the years and never had a serious problem with any; although I have learned that you get what you pay for.

The Schuberts don't fit me! They were either painfully tight across the temple or too loose fore & aft. The salesperson convinced me the Scorpion flip-up was the way to go, and it seemed to have a lot of worthy features. Big mistake. It hurt after an hour, the lining irritated my skin (& I'm not hypersensitive), intercom wouldn't fit, I hated the klik-lok fastener and the hinge broke easily. £240 down the swanny.

Mrs. Ted had decided she'd like a new helmet as well and bought herself a new silver-bike-coordinated flip-up Shoei for £280. I borrowed it (she's got a big head) and I was very impressed, even more impressed when the dealer let me have mine for £200 - he said they were last year's model - the new ones are around £320 in the UK. Best helmet I've owned.

I just picked up a new helmet earlier this year that fits all of the standards that you've listed. The Nolan N90. I have known people that didn't like Nolans, thought they fit weird, whatever. But I have had no problems since I picked it up last spring. Hot riding, cold riding, night riding, day riding, any kind of riding has been good.

Web bike world did a big review on it and named it Flip up helmet of the year last year. I have researched helmets with them in the past and they do a pretty thorough job. Check it out.

Really chuffed with My scorpion flip. Didn't hurt after an hour, the lining didn't irritate my non sensitive skin , my intercom did fit with sticky stuff, the klick lock is great for riding with the front up (and legal) and I havn't managed to break the hinge yet - but as I only paid £150 for mine brand new - I'm happy with it.

+ the visors are ultra clear - no ripples -made by the same people that make aircraft cockpit canopies. Oh -and good ventilation.

The helmet before my Nolan was a Scorpion. I had a tight spot in the middle of my forehead, but the lining was soft and the visor, inner visor, and flip up portion worked well. At the end of the day, the outer casing around the chin snapped away from the inner skeleton and the chin vent system broke off and required gluing. So, durability was the issue that closed the book on that helmet/manufacturer. Oh, and the neck pump thing never worked.

Afterall was said and done, I thought it was important that the outisde of the helmet stay attached to the inside...just my preference.

Hi Guys. I,m using the current model XR1100 from shoei with the tinted graduated visor....AWESOME....Had a TZ1 and then a TZR both were excellent but the 1100 is the most comfortable and also the quietest helmet i,ve ever used.....

After a big off in 1976 I would have lost half of my jaw if not for the shoei fullface I was using so I have always used a fullface since..

The ventilation of the 1100 is absolutely brilliant, from very cold conditions....no visor misting, to very very hot conditions nice and cool..it has 4 vents at the rear , 2 in the front plus the chin and they work brilliantly...very impressed...

Whilst not cheap I feel its worth every cent...as they say..if ya got a 20 buck head use a 20 buck helmet, cheers, Tadpole

G'day Tadpole I have a arai vector just gone back to wearing it been using the open face for a while. After hearing your story will stick with the fully. The only thing I don't like about the full face is the perifirul vision feels like looking through a letter box slot . What's your thoughts on that . Any more plans to come to the east coast?

I like the versatility of flip helmets, currently use a Zeus, but like the look of the new Shark Evoline 2 ST, very tight profile with the chin part and it folds all the way over so gets out of the wind if you want to open face for a while.

A while back Two Wheels did a review on helmets, and found very little difference between expensive and value priced helmets as far as safety was concerned.

Times 2 on the Shoeui 1 from me and 1 from the missis ,, She wanted a flip up and the shark was rated the best , but its heavy and my mates missis gets headaches with hers because its so heavy and noisy , i read good reports about the nolan 90 , but problem is unless you know someone who has them and will tell you the truth , its pot luck

But the Shouie 1100 gets my vote hot days the top vents are very good , . I only wear mine on long journeys around town and day rides i stick to my nolan with a flip up visor , but long journeys the shoui is very very comfortable

Hey, Coneye, I got a Nolan 90 this summer and I really like it. Very comfy for me and I'm appreciating the little removable chin curtain in the cold weather. A huge improvement over my HJC for noise. I still have the turbulence over the top of the SE windshield but I'm not looking for a new windshield anymore. The tinted slider works great - it does have a couple scratches from sliding up and down but they're not bad. It was treated with something or other and very hard to clean until I removed the treatment (warm water). It has a pinlock fogshield but I've never had a problem with it fogging so I've never used it. The ventilation works very nicely and with the SE I'm usually more comfortable with the faceshield wide open or cracked open a bit. It's a lot quieter completely closed so that's what I do at highway speeds, where the SE windshield sucks the most.

I thought it was a helluva lot of helmet for the money, which worked for me because I didn't have a helluva lot of money to spend on a helmet.

Get a brand that offers a PinLock visor insert and you'll not mist again.

Went to the NEC Bike show last weekend. Spent hours trying on all of the flip front helmets, although I kept looking at the C3, I just didn't feel comfortable, as it was either too loose or too tight between sizes. Tried a Shark Evoline 2, liked it instantly, fits well, and had the bonus of saving £ 120 ish pounds aswell. Enough money to buy some heated grips!!!

So anyone got any opinions on the Triumph / Oxford Cruiser Heated Grips, or any other suggestions please.

Good choice on the Shark Evoline, I have the C3 (like on the Shoei - the pinlock is ace) and it does the job fine but in the spring/summer out comes the Davida.

I would recommend heated gloves over grips because the back of your hands get very cold on long cold journeys even with heated grips.

+1 on the heated gloves. Had mine on at 0645 on the way to the NEC in freezing fog - hands were toasting.

I understand that, but the heated grips are much easier to use so even tho my first right grip broke, i'm sticking with them

I currently also use a Zeus flip, i find it very comfy but the wind noise is very loud. Ear plugs are a must. The flip i find very handy great for getting a police breath test or not removing your helmet at the petrol station. there is also a mod from Zeus for converting it to an open face unit as well.

Ps i Love my heated grips on the Storm.....wouldn't go without them now.

I've got the Roof Boxer V8. Very comfortable and I like the way the full face section not only flips up but slides right out of the way to the back of the helemt. No slide down tinted screen but my matt black version comes with a slightly tinted visor and can be comfortably worn with sun glasses if needed. There is also a new 2012 R model to watch out for with I believe some extra vents.

Dale,

Be aware that the heated grips have caused a few of us problems with broken throttles.

If you notice your throttle is 'not-so-smooth', when you twist the grip, it'd be prudent to check the plastic part that the cable ends attach to!

Oh, and 'Talk your missus into coming to Tumbarumba, too'! We'll even sing Happy Birthday to her.

I tried the v8 boxer at a dealers a month or 2 back, the assistant gave it to me in the flipped back position (no puns plz ) it felt very comfortable. then she said " now your either a v8 rider or not, you ready ? " I wasnt sure what she meant until then chin piece was pulled down over !!

blimy it seemed so closed in I had to remove straight away " ummm" she said " seems your not "
shame because i think the looks & quality are spot-on..so still looking for a suitable summer lid

I know what you mean, it is a bit claustrophpobic in a shop enoirenment, partcularly the first time you try it on but it really is fine on the road.

Don't worry Jimbo, I had my first service to the Triumph Master (Charlie) here in Victoria and that's one of the first things he does is to work his magic on the throttle

PS Still working on the other half for the Thunderbird Flocking still a month and a half to go

The grips won't leave you stranded if you prepare. Airplanes, on closer inspection, have safety wire on most nuts and bolts.
The FAA doesn't trust just thread locker or the Mfg. good intentions.

I am in the process of re-fixing my grips like the truck driver helped one of our members. Multiple wire ties like re-bar.
This is good insurance for those that haven't broken theirs, yet.
