I dont like seeing the dog leg before the muffler either... maybe a two into one megaphone, I know I'm asking a lot here lol. Maybe even something like this Cary Faas exhaust...Discuss
Go on, make it, I dare ya.
Yeah I know...I'll end up getting someone to build it

My 430 AWHP import is catless, purely for the track so I'm pretty familiar with the gains usually available by removing the cat. 15AWHP+ big noise + black soot + flames on over run/de-cel. However from what I've seen the cat on these bikes is a well thought out item that flows enough gas, well at the moment they do we'll see what their like at 10K. I guess my problem and with deference to the fine people who have make these pipes is I don't see any real performance gains yet with what I'll call a Stage 1 tune (pipes, air cleaner and download). Maybe it will take the addition of a computer to get some good numbers. If thats what it takes then that's cool but....
What if Triumph engineered a product with the 1700cc in mind or for that matter with with another 20 or 30 hp in mind. Lets look at the Harley. The first thing you are forced to do when you want more hp is to get rid of the pipes AND the cat. The cat on HD's are super restrictive...they are tiny in comparison to our cat. (Garfield V's one of those freaky hairless alien cats...meow lol. Sorry back to being serious). If you get say V&H slip ons you only get a couple hp but the real gains are from a full system...forget about cams. Check a Buell against a Sporty. You can smash another 20-30hp into a Buell before you need to change the full system...try doing that on the Sporty. What is the difference...the cat. The Harley is a compromised design, engineered to pass EPA and force owners to spend big coin to get decent gains. The Triumph Thunderbird is, as witnessed by all, a better engineered deal all around.
My second issue with the current crop of pipes is they don't look any better than what the OEM stuff is, I think Triumph kicked a goal with the shorties. Now I don't consider myself to be a style guru but I just don't dig the shapes or the way the pipes exiting the cat seem to take a 45 degree upturn into the muffler. Choosing pipes for my lowered Speedy was easy...long slash cuts from Thunderbike. They suited the Hot Rod look well. But for me, on this scoot, I really want to go with a shorty race megaphone look.
I suppose we will see a few more come out but if you look at what is available for HD the pipes are more varied in design and on the whole more aesthetically pleasing. I'm not stingy on the mods or the bling but I wont be buying any pipes in the foreseeable future.
