I am looking into purchasing a Garmin 660 , question is do I use the motorcycle mount that comes with it or does another style work better? Thanks

You'll wanna use the motorcycle mount, as it's waterproof and simple to install. Also, the 660 WON'T work in motorcycle mode UNLESS it's on the motorcycle mount. It's brain just assumes if it's NOT on the motorcycle mount, it's NOT on a bike and you won't get the motorcycle-specific features (like the nifty motorcycle icon, fuel tracking/range till empty, etc.)

I know because I've been happily-running my 660 on my 'Bird for almost a year now.

What he said. Excellent advice. Mine is centered right on my handle bars and I use it as an accurate and more visible speedometer than a GPS.

This is what I use for my Zumo 660, Its great for when you make short stops, it saves you having to take your navvi off every time you stop it's lockable . It fits around the Zumo mount

What he said ++++ I use mine often just as a speedo without the directional capacity etc. so as to avoid having to move my eyes away from the road and traffic for too long, as is required when checking out the tank mounted speedo (still the major design flaw for the 'Bird in my opinion).

Cheers, Max

You're right about needing the speed reading up higher. I'm going to mount my Zumo 660 on the 'bird. It's been gathering dust since I moved the BMW on. Thanks.

Good idea. I think the tank mount is downright unsafe in any kind of traffic. With the GPS mounted on the center of the handlebars it's easy to just take a quick glance and keep your eyes on the road. I don't remember the last time I looked at the speedometer. But, I guess the cruiser "style" demands the tank mount?

Hey all, New Tbird storm owner. Fantastic site, have learnt so much already, looking forward to learning more.
Looking at hard wiring a ubs plug for my tom tom , its not a mc model so not weather proof or anything so will be on and off constantly. Anyone know of any problems running it off the headlight main? Just to keep it all tidy and contained up around the risers. Cheers

Good morning

Well, the stock mount works but the half-ring is too short for our 26mm handlebar. I've found a shop where they sell some Inox parts. During the next weeks, I'll have further infos.
Over all, the 660 is the best Navi for bikes but that doesn't mean that is working well. Honestly, I'd love to throw this peace of crap on the next wall to spend so much money for such a bad quality drives me nuts. I had a Medion from a Harddiscounter and that device was ways better than this bloody shit from Garmin.

But as long as there's nothing better on the market..

Bye

My Garmin 500 (now 550) has been great for about 4 years and 50,000 miles. Looks more robust than the 660.

Ah, hence the reason I now use my iPhone 4 with the Garmin GPS resident map set. Mounts on the bars with a RAM universal phone cradle on a Leader Mount. Direct wire kit for the iPhone, Sena Bluetooth headsets and it all works flawlessly. Stop, pop the iPhone out of the cradle and into my belt holster and no worries about theft. iPhone screen is higher res than any of the Garmin Nuvi's or Zumo. Already had the iPhone and Sena Headsets, so cost was $150 to add the mount and direct wire kit.

Hi all

Well, the RAM-Mount sucks definitely, the threads are far too short...

That looks far better

The Ring is stainless steel (5 Bucks) and the mount lost the advertising.
BtW: I use transparent tape to protect the chrome from the handlebar

Bye

The only problem with the RAM mounts is they're not pretty with that "U" bolt around your handlebars. Functional but fugly.

I agree Daycruiser...............Samsung Stratosphere, Ram Aqua box, Sena headset............good to go! Don't even have to really look at the phone, it talks to me when I need to make a turn.

There must be 100 different ways to connect a ram mount. If the Ubolt doesn't work for you you can use something else. Their mount catalog is crazy. I love them because you can swap them out, change them around, mount damn near anything you want....

And what the hell are you talkin' about fugly Birdy.... your Garmin mount looks like it came out of the cab of a Humvee.
