Hey all,
I have a 1000miler coming up next weekend, and was just going to strap a duffel bag to the pillion. But I cam across these two from Saddleman. Multiple mounting options, and even has a detachable backrest if used on the rear seat! Sounds like a good idea for the long hauler that doesn't have a rider backrest already. My other option was for the Saddleman "tunnel bag" for the rear seat (or rack if you got one). A bit lower profile but not sure of the capacity. With the cool fall breezes starting up here, I'm thinking I'll need to pack a bit more/warmer than if the trip were 1-2 weeks ago.

If anyone's got any experience/feedback on either of these, please let me know. If not, I'll be the guinea pig for one of them and let you all know how it works out.

Thanks,
Jamie

Mate it looks like you may need a step ladder I've just completed a 2000 k run and decided to keep it simple, my gear in the travel bag was inside a dry bag and a pair of shoes in one saddlebag inside a plastic bag. We had around four hours of good rain in total and everything stayed nice and dry, so I was happy that I hadn't spent big dollars on gear.

We even struck some snow, unusual for us in September and bloody cold.

Leethal - I don't have saddlebags, and trying to avoid them. Like you pointed out, worried about the "height" of the one tailbag, so grabbed the "tunnel bag" for about $125 USD.

Looks like we'll get a bit wet this weekend, so I'll report back with info. Haven't fitted it up, yet, but it looks like it'll hook up sturdy, and give me a place to use a cargo net to hold down my full-face helmet (for when it's not pissing rain, and has lots of pockets for misc stuff.

Yes I here you re the bags, I don't like them either. The ones I bought are only smallish and don't require any frames to keep them off the paint work or wheels(thrown over the seat not under), but are handy for tools etc. The bags zip off so you leave the yoke bit tied to your bike.

I have to say that Saddlemen saddlebags are crap. There I said it. I hate the ones I own.

I have had that tail bag and it does not work as well as the Sissybar type that slips over the pillion back pad-that bag is really rock solid and you can filp it around and use it as a back rest easily. On a long trip I use a Northface waterproof duffle (amazing garage sale item for 5 bucks) on the rear seat and the sissybar bag on the rack. I know you may not have a rack or sissybar on your bike and if not then the plain old tail bag does not seem to be real stable and I would not suggest that way to go.

I have had the Sissybar bag now for 3 years and it's held up well. Some even have wheels so just take in a hotel room for the night.

So go the "tunnel" bag (the one that looks like a duffel). Packs up well, attaches easily, and 2min to take it off when we got to the hotel. Lots of storage, for a weekend...or more if you pack light, and was very sturdy when mounted. The free "dry bag", however, wasn't so dry. Did 170 miles in pouring rain on the way out, but nothing was totally soaked. Couple damp shirts on top, so "fix" is either a real dry bag, or pack stuff in a few zip-locs, shopping bags, etc. All said, better than a gym bag, but probably wouldn't spend more than $100-125USD. Unfortunately....I did

I use a dry bag from my diving days, inside my overnight bag, totally water proof. I believe Andy Strapz is now selling one that can open both ends, so you can get to those things that are always at the bottom.

I used this one Link on a overnight camping ride, overkill for just one night but it held the tent, sleeping bag. pad, extra warm clothes and a bunch of other useless crap I didn't need. Overall I am very impressed with it

Hopefully here's a picture,
