Does anyone have any suggestions on gas tank protection from jacket etc. I am under the impression that Triumph's water based paint is "soft".
I have already noticed some light scratches.

I am considering 2 routes;
1. Leather tank pad (see pic) but I think dirt would get under it an would require frequent removal and cleaning.

2. Tank pad with adhesive backing, found one for a R3 (see pic), may work but I'm not sure if bottom pad radius would be close to T-Bird seat radius.

Any other Ideas, sources for covers/pads?

Thanks
John

I too like the leather tank pad with pocket, but was concerned about the paint getting scratched up under it after seeing so many posts about the soft paint. Will definately follow this thread to see comments from people with these items.

I liked the looks of the leather pocket but didn't end up getting because of multiple posts from people that bought it and said that it really scratched up the tank. I guess you could try putting a felt backing on it but seems like if you pay close to $100 for an accessory you shouldn't have to screw with it. I am just looking for another aftermarket alternative, found this site but doesn't have Tbird specific pads

I installed the Tankslapper covers last winter and inspite of the fact that their not holding on very well (have to re-install them next winter), they do the job of protecting the paint.

Cheap and easy solution.

G'day I am considering the leather tank pouch cover as well and I believe there is a solution to the dust and scratching problem underneath. There is some clear paint protective tape it is called ICS racers tape will not pull paint off when removed it is used by NASCAR teams I believe. So my idea is to cover the section of the tank to be covered by the leather cover and there you go problem solved. I have already used this tape under the rubber pads under the passenger section of the dual touring seat . These rubber pads sit straight on the paint of the rear mudguard BAD DESIGN ! I'm thinking there will be a few people get a horrible shock when they lift there seat to find great ugly rub marks through the paint . Hope this idea helps.

If you use the tank pad you will need to protect the paint. I used the tank pad for a year and it scratched my paint so bad that I now have a new tank!

oxford make a thick sticky back protector that you can cut to the size you require. used it on the sides of the tank where my triumph gear was making speedy inroads to bare metal. it worked excellently.

Thanks all, great leads on tank pads.

Tadpole, I like the Retro pads, do you have a link or name of the vendor you bought them from? I also shot a e-mail to British Customs about the Rocket tank pad (pic'd above), they think it only says "Triumph". I replyed asking for rough dimensions. Sean's reply was very prompt and answered my question. Will pass along dimensions if I get them.

Hi Zolti, I was in two minds which to use, yours look great....what made my mind up was that the techspec pads use a special adhesive which means they can removed and replaced as often as you like (as long as the surface is kept clean) and i liked the look . (saw them on ataDudes album here), cheers, Tadpole

I had clear bra applied to my tank and front fender, can hardly see it!
Cost was $45.00, protects from rock chips and dragging stuff across the tank.

Tadpole,

I really like the Techspec pads on your tank, just want to verify that it is 62-0049-ss. Went on their website to order and it looks like a completely different shape. Did you cut yours at all?

Update

Found two options that I like.

1- Techspec offers thier material in 7.5" x13", I could trim to fit (little narrower and notched under tank. Bulk pad comes with 2 sheets 7.5" 13" for about $49.99. Could use extra for other wear areas. For some reason couldn't get to thier website this morning, no link sorry.

2- Immortal graphics makes some cool tank pads but this may be second choice due to cleaning around nooks and crannies of pad.

Ended up going with Immortal Graphix but mounted it "Y" down due to better coverage. Pattern is original British flag black.

I like the tank bib. I have one complaint. I was trailering the bikes through two days of rain at the end of August. I have an open trailer for two bikes. When I took the Thunderbird off the trailer, I reached into the pouch for something. There was water up to my second knuckle. I realized that the water had no where to go. So I am drilling a few holes for drainage.

How hard can it be? It's not rocket surgery.

Hey Zolti!
You wouldn't happen to have a part number handy for those knee pads, would ya? All I can find are America tank pads shaped much differently than yours. If there were such a thing as factory T-Bird pads, I'll bet they'd look just like that. Nice job!
Thanks! -Mike

Tadpole-

My Techspec pads are not staying on very well, used alcohol to clean the tank and a hairdryer to heat surface to 80 degrees.... still wanting to peel off. Called Techspec and they are sending another set.....Have you had any problems with your tank pads?

Thanks
JD

Hey Zolti, Im with MotorMac, do you have a part number for your knee pads? EVERYTHING is expensive in Aus'. We get ripped off so bad. Im really not too keen on buying the wrong type then trying again..

Thanks Al'
