Thank you to Monte from the site for volunteering to bring his bike in for a fitment and production of a Drivers backrest for the Thunderbird.

I have been working with a company, makers of back rest for a few different bikes including the America. I personally tested this on my America and was really impressed with it and made a huge difference on long hauls and takes care of the problem of most low back issues on Cruisers and that being slouching.

This will be for the guys who have a stock seat and want an economical answer for low back issues. I'll keep you advised of production and my personal test results which should happen within the next two weeks. You know me, (I must have been born in Missouri) you have to "Show me!" If it is anything like the America, it will be a great asset.

Just got mine in to test and it is AWESOME! Even better fit than the one I had on my America. This is the ticket for the long ride or any ride if you have "Cruiser Slouch" and a sore back! Good fit, good finish.

The backrest tube is stainless steel, the hardware is powder coated and will mount with or without the Detachable Backrest hardware and no issue with Saddlebags r saddlebag mounts (eg Easy Brackets).

I am going to shorten mine (similar to the one pictured above) so I can swing my leg over but with the Thunderbird plenty of room to slide my foot through.

This backrest passively secured sitting into the tubes of the mount. The mounts attaches to the top shock bolt, works well with the stock caps. The backrest can be removed just by lifting it out of the mount tubes, mounts stay in place.

Happy about the way it came out. Ordering up some to have on hand.

Also going to be about $150? Seems a little steep, but might be an option for me down the road. Would like some more pics if you have them, of the back and of the mounting area at least. Thanks for working on this.

Just got my own fine tuned and it is going to stay! It can actually be trimmed down to sit lower but I have it right where I like it.

Price is $135 with shipping US

Canada, Europe and Aus will calculate out and based on actual shipping.

Good one Eddy

The only complaint I have with the OEM one is the fact that you have to remove the seat, unbolt it and bolt in the plug. Easy R&R would be a bonus.

WOW! Thanks Eddy, just when I thought I didn't "NEED" anything else for the Bird, you come along with (wait for it)............... JUST WHAT I NEED.

I'm a customer, let me know when I can order one.

Next month I will be heading for Daytona for Biketoberfest and hopefully could try it out on a long weekend road trip.

I went back because I sent my Nitro's in for a different set of springs (the original ones I tested) I sold the ones I had tested with the current spring rate because they were stock length and I wanted to go back to the lower shock. I just have not put them back on because I have not been riding lately because I have been too swamped with other things, today is project day!

It was not a reflection of not liking them or changing my mind, I would post that if it were the case. In fact, I think I will go through them on right now before I get distracted.

Not adjustable, made for specific riders height in a range.

They do move you a head a little, but dependent upon how low you make the back rest. By trimming the "height" down it moves you more forward to fine tune it to where you like to sit. The higher, the further back you can push you butt back. I did some comparisons yesterday and I can still push my butt back, but then again I am short legged and I like where I end up being. You get the same effect with a Corbin seat that moves you forward too.

But I cannot give you a real quantitative answer on how far forward because it is pretty subjective. I do have a customer who is 6 ft. 2 that is getting one and I will know for certain if they have issues.

This this is a brand new item I don't have a experiential resource pool to pull from. The Thunderbird seat allows for quite the range of sitting, from what I can tell, by design because it does not cradle you like some bikes do but allows you to slide forward or back.

Going to make a video today showing the details of the Backrest because I found a little asset that I had not considered before in that I can strap a back pack to it (using the Fender rack) And it made for a secure mounting option for that. I think the same would be true with the pillion seat as a base.

I made a video up for the backrest because a member asked. Not the best but shows the functionality of it.

Hi Eddy. My pro-Tac arrived last week. it took longer to get it out off the box than it did to fit it. It really works well at taking the strain off your lower back, and your hands are more relaxed at speed requiring less grip to hold against wind pressure.

Its a pitty more suppliers don't have your understanding of a good service.

After sending some precision roll tools for heat treatment last month, they did the work and this is how they sent them back.

Hi Eddy, Used my backrest on the trip to the keys on Saturday. Went over 250 miles and spent all day just rolling down the overseas highway.

The backrest, the switchblade foot pegs, the throttle lock and the risers (all of which I have purchased from you) really made the ride enjoyable. The Bike is set up exactly the way I wanted it so THANKS for all of the neat stuff you have for the Bird.

At first I didn't think I would like the way the backrest moved me a little forward on the seat but after the first 5 miles, I was all smiles. It's simple and works as intended. It really made the ride more comfortable.

Hi folks - I know that this is an old thread, but I wanted to point out that Eddy and I are presently discussing how to get the T-Bird LT also available from Pro-Tac. I just bought my new 2015 T-Bird LT this week, and while the comfort seats are very comfortable (as advertised and thus named), I tend to slouch the same way that Eddy mentions in his video.

If any of you have additional options (other than buying a whole "long haul" seat or something), please let me know.

There is a company out there, which I found on line [I believe it's located in Louisiana], that sells rider's back rest,as well as other motorcycle accessories, for all motorcycles.I just can't think of the name of it at the moment.DUH!! The unit consists of a bracket which bolts on to the frame rail or side brackets, which the TBird also has,and the back rest itself, mounts on to that bracket.A couple years ago,I bought one for a friend of mine's wife to give to him for Xmas for his Kawasaki Nomad. So if ya go on line and shop for a back rest to fit your bike,I'll guarantee that some one out there [other then Triumph] makes it for your application."IF" I can remember the name of the company,or find the site, I'll post it.

The name of the place I was thinking of is "Cajun Cycle Accessories".However,I went to their site to discover that they are now selling HD's,hence their focus is on the HD and I could not find any rider's back rest for the Tbird. So we're back to square one.I tried!!

Thanks, Dave...appreciate the attempt there. Yeah, so far the Pro-Tac option appears to be the only one without resorting to either a custom build or something which requires cutting up the passenger seat to install a custom rest. This one at least should only require that they rework the mounting ears on the one which they already produce for the Commander. And it would then give other folks an option that doesn't presently exist, which wouldn't be there if I built my own or had a local one created.

Now, I just have to figure out logistics from my FL home to their SC location... might as well start the 'bird off right with a 1000 mile round trip road cruise, ehh?

Protac is NOT producing the back rest for the Commander. I just tried to fit the standard bird protac, it will not work.

It's my opinion once designed the same Protac would fit both the Commander and LT. I don't know that as fact but I really cant see why it would not.

Thanks, Eddy - and sorry about that info on the Commander before. My mistake as I'm still figuring out the various Thunderbird variants and what they have in common/differences. Looking forward to the backrest when it's available, and appreciate the help.

OK,

Have a Protac backrest now fitted and confirmed for both the LT and Commander.
I have paid for the confirmations for fitment and arranged for a fellow to get his fitted (for free) so now we know for sure. Will be listing them shortly.

Eddy - the original post notes the Protac backrest fits the original seat. I have the original seats, but have not ridden with them, as the rider seat seems thin and uncomfortable just sitting in the driveway, and the bike came with the Triumph Longhaul solo which is pretty comfortable. Does the Protac also fit the Triumph Longhaul solo?

2nd question - If Wifey likes riding 2-up (we have never done so, but she expressed interest when I brought the T-Bird home in Sept.), the stock rider & passenger seats will have to be replaced. Have you (or anyone) tried the Protac with a Mustang tandem seat like the Two-Piece Vintage Seat? I know I can buy the Mustang with a backrest, but If I already own and like the Protac, I'd like to be able to use it.
