| Posted : 02 Jul 2011 - 12:51 Post title : 1-up riding config...cargo options. Opinions/advice wanted. | | Hello, all. Nearing 400miles in a week on my new Storm. Thinking about cargo options. I'm going for a 1-up configuration (dumping the pillion), and not sure if I can avoid saddlebags or not (already have a set of Ghost Brackets, due to added flexibility in mounting any different bag type). But it got me thinking..... Instead of saddlebags, can I go tailbag only (maybe add a forkbag for smaller, everyday needs)
I like the factory "shaped" luggage rack (probably black), but it doesn't look like it gives much support. So thinking the wider, tubular chrome fender rack would be decent. But what do ya'll tether to? Saw a few posts where guys made up fender-bolt extensions to tie down to. So could be an option.
Are there any removable (aka - quick release) Sissy Bar options for 1-up riding? Would be nice, especially on long hauls to have a backrest. Plus, whether it be the Triumph model, or the sweet Kurakyn (sp?) with luggage racks, would give a more secure attachment, for an even larger tail-bag. But the Triumph is something like $600 USD by the time you get the brackets, the sissy bar, the pad and the rack.
Any thoughts? LeatherUp.com has some pretty nice, and inexpensive, tailbags, with good reviews...and can get a few size options. For my daily use, to-from work, would like to be able to tiedown my laptop bag, rather than backpacking it to/from work. Then, for either longer runs, or trips to the store, have the ability to pop on something with a little more capacity.
If any of you could post a pic of your 1-up (or 2-up) config with tailbag configs, I'd much appreciate it.

Givi E21s mounting to my bike At the end of the first set of photos, you'll also see my Bags Connection HD Traveller (no longer available in the US). It's a great bag, but I discovered a few quirks while on my recent 4 day trip. I'm thinking I'm gonna get the Triumph Single Seat Tubular Rack and then get a Givi E450 Monolock Top Case I feel that those 3 cases, along with a single, medium-sized dry bag will work better for longer trips.

(Re: narsisco_lopez) | | As someone that despises all forms of bags on the bird this was always a trouble spot for me. I don't like crap on my bike and don't like spending good modding money on things like this so I had a good think on it before doing anything.
I've got the bags connection HD Traveller as well and it worked well for me on my recent tour. The nice thing was a couple quick straps released was all I needed to release the bag and I could carry it like a dufflebag into the hotel. I also added small cavalry bags that held my rain gear, tools and mirrors (don't ask).
Here is my setup.
I could strip it back down to nothing very quickly with no lingering attachment points of any kind. I liked that.

The shaped rack or the tubular chrome rack? That pack looks awesome for a weekend (or longer) tour. I need to make sure my mount is "supportive" enought that I don't have to wrench down on it too much to strap on my laptop bag for work. For that purpose, I'm thinking the chrome tube rack might be best. I'm torn, cuz I like the look of the other Triumph rack (contours with the fender, and is black or chrome), but doesn't look like it's very supportive for anything more than a lunch bag. Plus not much to tie-down to.

I have logged a total of 8,000 miles using the tubed fender rack. On the trip out west even when I lost my fender bolt (backed out (lock tight) it remained stable the front has a wide platform double bolt mount. I have stacked things up high and heavy to test a couple of different configurations of luggage for long haul and short haul.
Saddle bags add a convenience element for storing things you want to get quick access to that you don't want to rummage through to get at like your rain gear etc when you are touring. I tested and like Dowco/Willie and Max Iron Rider because they have framed internal structure that allows you to stack with stability. Other brands as well do and I recommend a framed system, more stable. I did try Kuryakyn but their system seems to be more dependent upon securing to a backrest where Iron Rider can secure very well with just the fender rack.
Tying things down or using bungees can be done effectively using bungee spools along the rail and or a bungee rack. The hardware for Easy Brackets can also be used in this fashion with or witho9ut the Brackets on. Can't speak to Ghost brackets set up but may be similar.
Hope this helps. Two photo's from two different trips with different sized bags.
Iron Rider Main Bag Actually wider than the Overnight bag by 2 inches and expandable two additional inches each side. Also has the bungee spools on the rear fender and top shock bolt.
Iron Rider Main Bag and Large Roll Bag (Both 2" wider than the Over Night and Roll bag next set up below)
Iron Rider Over Night Bag with an Roll Bag and Computer strapped as well as other stuff attached to out side. Rear fender strut mounted Bungee spool and Top shock bungee spool for attaching bungee net. This configuration went 2500 miles on this test and was totally stable. The Triumph tubed fender rack is a nice platform.
Just remember to use your imagination, You can load lots of things without spending a dime! You can do most anything once...some things twice!

The ghost bracket bolts set up pretty much like the EZ's. The bracket, itself has a little more adjustability. Still like to try to stick to bungee-mount than off it comes, so I have Ghost Brackets for future-use if needed. I like both of your setups, and the big set up seems to give you a built-in backrest to boot. How much for that 2.5gal bucket-baby-carrier Man, some folks is crazy!!

I like the looks of a more "traditional" bag, although I'd give up some of the security and weather resistance you get out of the hard-bag styles. Thinking I'm down to the Triumph tube rack, but may go synthetic leather like some of the River Road bags (they got matching saddlebags should I eventually end up there). But I love the pricing on the Dowco setup Eddy mentioned. Get 3 different configs for the price of the syn-leather option.
Was wondering, though...anyone know the dimensional differences between the T-bird and the RocketIII?? The one-up rack for the R3 is pretty sweet, stands off the fender more. I know it's got the bigger rear tire, but wonder "how much" wider it makes the fender mount and if I could make a quick-release bracket which would take the RIII bracket, and fit them to the Storm's fender mounts (like the removalble sissy bar).

I love my Iron Rider case that I got from you Eddy - one of my best buys to-date. Great for knocking around at the weekend or shopping.
But for the last tour I used my GIVI top box (E450 'Simply II) and saddle bags plus the Pony bags:
*cough* Actually - I like the simplicity of the GIVI case sooooooooo much, that I have ordered the larger 55 Ltr. Maxia 3 box for the Greece trip! I just love how simple it was to take the bag off the 'Bird - and it holds MASSIVE amounts!!! Might look like a scooter - but boy, is it practical!
Here's the Maxia 3:

This is why I like you, Lee... we think alike. I really like my Bags Connection Traveller, but I'm seriously leaning towards the Givi for the simplicity and storage space for my (very delayed!) trip "back east". As you can see from my last post, I was also considering the E450, but now will have to check out the Maxia. Thanks for the heads up on that one
Obviously Givi doesn't make a bike-specific mounting kit for the 'Bird. Which mount base did you end up getting to fit on your tubular rack?

Yup - it fits the tubular rack perfectly! It was solid.
Maybe - to make things absolutely Fort Knox strong - I could always add some side supports to the rear fender bolt. But it's fine as it is.
