Well after looking into the waxed cotton a bit more I decided I really liked them and thought they would be a good addition to my bike wardrobe. What I didn't like however was the price. For the jackets I was interested in I was at a good $800-900 for a quality jacket. (or you could get a counterfeit for $500 with questionable quality) But as with most things I researched and researched options and finally found on one site a mention of a particular manufacturer that creates waxed jackets for motorcyclists not for show ponies and makes them completely bespoke, which for a shaven ape like me is a HUGE thing. Dropping lots of money on a standard fit jacket only to be disappointed by the fact that you aren't a 'standard' fit person is always a big let down. With a 'made to measure' item (so long as they know what they're doing) you get no such disappointment but instead a garment that actually fits... So, when I heard about Claymore Waxed Cotton Jackets Link I had to give it a go.

The site isn't the most informative, but the owner Carl is very quick to respond and keen to do a good job. I found him very easy to deal with. The base price of the jacket is 160 GBP (about $260) but I added full knox armor (for 60) and I did an optional beige color which cost another 15 (black is standard).

Here is the completed jacket that arrived today 10 days after initial contact (9 after payment was sent)

Sorry I didn't grab a inside shot, but it is lined with a nice light flannel lining. All hardware is brass and of good quality. The armor is knox, and all pockets are tailored to this armor, not just generic pockets so it fits in nicely. It should be noted that the armor is unnoticeable, including the backboard while on.

I really can't say enough good about Claymore and their product. If you want a waxed cotton jacket I would seriously consider them.

Oh, and Mat, this is a great deal for you.... Carl is located over in Goole, about 45 miles from you.

Great looking Jacket! Did you go for the rubber press studs as well?

I didn't as I didn't think it was needed on the shorter Mojave jacket. If I was getting one of the longer jackets I might have gotten them.

That is ONE DAMNED FINE jacket, Thatch... at a great price, too. Good find! I've bookmarked that link for when my wife allows more motorcycle spending.

I wonder if he'd consider making riding pants? Would be a great addition.

Well, that was a better alternative than having it modeled by the wookie.

Thanks, I'm pretty pleased with it. I've really gotten into the bespoke stuff lately. I found a place that I can get custom made jeans made for me for $55 a pair, completely made to measure. That's cheaper than some Levis off the rack. So, when I found Claymore, making the jacket I wanted at less than half the price AND made to measure..... there was no way I wasn't going to do that.

I didn't tell anyone else here directly about it until I got to go through the process as I hadn't seen but one review. I didn't want to suggest something that might be a ripoff, and this was anything but that.

As for pants, no mention of that online or in our discussions. That would be slick though. I am probably going to buy one of the longer coats later in the year. This one was purchased specifically for the Greece run and delivered in time for Bled so I can test it out on a shorter tour.

I'll be interested in your impressions once you've done some miles in it... particularly it's breathability and water-shedding, and not to mention, it's comfort while riding.

BTW, it's very cool he included the armor option... important feature in a motorcycle jacket!

Thats one fine jacket . Love the colour too. Nice find. Will give it a good once over if you get it on the Bled trip.
Looking at your size - I should get away with one for half the price, or two for one.

Great looking jacket Thatch.

I Have been debating a Vanson waxed cotton jacket. They are nice but for twice the price and without armor.

I have a similar problem....... nothing fits. My shoulders need 44 and my waist is 32". To get a jacket that fits for that price is unreal.

One question though. Is that an American flag on a jacket built in GB?

Fantastic bit of kit there Thatch, trouble is my jacket collection is more extensive Liberace's.

....Only £160 for a tailor made unique jacket is great value.

BTW, here are a couple more images of the jacket's construction details. The color is off because they were taken in my dark office but they still show the details.

First the double wind block zipper flaps and lining....

The under arm vents...

and just another back shot since the previous one was crumpled up on the chair....

and yes, I do have my own mannequin, but he rarely rides pillion.

Thank ya... yup, I'll be bringing it to Bled to be sure. Barring any major issues I'll be bringing it on to 'Thunder to Ouzo' as well.

As for the Kirschwasserschnapps.... well, I don't know about that, but I do have a gallon of cherry liqueur working in the basement right now. If I could find some more jars I'd have a second gallon in there as well.

Hi Domyjeans,

Well I've just finished riding over 3'000 km with Thatch while he was wearing this jacket. I was wearing my Triumph Stockwell leather jacket - which I freshly waxed in front of the fire to help the wax soak in.

What I want to say is: The jacket that Thatch has was MORE waterproof than my 3 times more expensive Triumph leather jacket!!!

It's also prone to show 'character' (read as road grime and sweat) of the road trips - which I personally like to see! It says you're a riding and not a poser.

It is very comfortable. Claymore did a great job ensuring my sizing was accurate and I got a very good fitting jacket. It is not heavy as I had the light flannel lining added because the main purpose of this jacket was for warm weather riding. You can however get a thicker lining added if you want a heavier jacket if that is your preference. I did have minimal water intrusion from the arm vent holes (my riding position probably aggravates this. A more standard riding position might be less prone to this issue) and the cuffs (both wrist and waist) have a corduroy lining that can get a bit wet, of course that might well be what keeps the water from going further. But any water intrusion was also easily rectified as the jacket also dried out exceptionally quickly. We rode through hours of rain and my jacket was always dry within a half hour to an hour of the rain stopping (assuming we were still riding) Never wet the next day.

Overall the jacket did exactly what I wanted it to do. I'm quite pleased.
