I just had to take up the offer...
They were half price...
They look like something worn by space men...
And most importantly - they fit my feet rather well!
So why not?! ... I can hear you... "But they look FUGLY!"
If truth be know, I actually bought them due to their venting mesh in the front:
... and also because of the larger protruding heal-moulding:
Fact is - these boots were indirectly purchased because I bought some new riding jeans!!!
Boots... Jeans...
What's the story here then!?
OK - the story goes: I'm vertically challenged - so my 28" inside leg proves to be as much as problem as our friend Thatch's longer legs are. Regardless of the make (excluding Hood Jeans) the shortest leg you normally get is 34". So that leaves me with a turn-up of around 6" of material...
Well these here boots - icon Field Armor - have that extra little bit of material protruding at the heal. This serves to hold the jeans up that little bit! Works rather well actually. The wifey believes this excuse - so I hope you lot can too...
REPORT Fit: Nice and wide! Great for my flat footed feet. They are a little tight around my calf muscle, but there is enough straps and adjusters to work around that. I like the straps - this allows me to apply support to specific areas and also allows a quick release and exit.
Feel: They are VERY sturdy! There's no way you can go lifting you toes up to change gear... They are very solid and feel more like a mini motocross boot.
Overall Impressions: A solid - funky - bold boot, that certainly fits my feet rather well. The venting in the front of the boot helps a little - and any day with temperatures above 30 degrees C (90 F) you are pleased to feel that little breeze going around your toes! They are NOT water proof - naturally (venting mesh) - and are not as 'silky' to walk around in as my Daytona Travel Star boots. BUT, hey! They look more: 'POW! BAM! WHATCHALIKE - LOOK AT ME' and not so much: 'Sleeping Granddad.. ZZzzzzzz'.
A pair of boot to be worn with turn-up washed jeans, a cool Racer Cafe leather jacket, chewing gum and shades in action and a lovely lady at your side....
Just my humble opinion! What's yours?

| Posted : 31 May 2011 - 07:43 Post title : Re: icon - Field Armor Boots (Re: Birdy68) | | Well they look the part Birdy. I could never use that chunky of a sole though as my foot would never fit under the shifter. (I always look for thin soles, which is surprisingly hard to find) but they look pretty sturdy and seem to be a nice middle ground between adventure and cruiser so they will look good with both bikes. Of course that inch or two of heal won't hurt on that tiger either.
I just got in a pair of Alpine Star Harlem Weatherproof boots...
and I'm still a bit on the fence with them. (of course I rode in them and ground a bit off one heel so they are mine now) The fit is good (go one size smaller) other than, as with you, my leg is a bit thicker and the ankle and upper adjustment are pretty much to their limit. I suspect as things break in this will get better. The other issue is simply one based on the ride we are going on... they are rather warm. The weatherproofing comes at a cost and I'm not sure how pleasant they will be in Greece in August. (I'm thinking the same of my new jacket) What I really want to do is bring two jackets and two pair of boots, but that would leave me room for nothing else beside a couple pair of skivvies and a toothbrush....
Anywho, boots look good and looks like you got a killer deal on them. Good job

They have an 'air' version as well that has a mesh body but otherwise the same as this. Obviously it isn't waterproof though.
Be mindful though, they do run big, I went a size smaller and it fits well.

Of course I just checked and they don't ship international (I have a 'US' address that I can ship to here so it's not actually international for me (in a strange sort of pseudo logic)). I did check however and there is a guy on ebay selling them for 109 GBP plus probably 30 shipping. But, I can understand wanting to try them on in person first. Only place I found that carries them that has a location somewhat near you is Get Geared over in Leeds but I don't know if they have everything that's in their online store actually there on site. The link for the boot on their site is Link Good luck
Oh, and don't worry about Birdy. He can take a bit of thread hijacking. Anyone that can wear boots that look like they were made for Gene Simmons to go skiing in has enough self confidence not to be troubled by a bit of hijacking.

Hey... and you have to remember the other side of the family are Italian! So all this criss-crossing-hijacking-loud-debating is ABSOLUTELY normal for me!

Of course now I just ran across the Belstaff Thruxton jacket again and I'm gettin' all twitchy... if it weren't summer I'd do something stupid today. ... (hell, I'm almost guaranteed to do something stupid today, just not order another full leather jacket kind of stupid, it will be a different stupid)

However... I've got the lower version of the Icon Field Armor boot and love it. Mine don't have the yellow bottoms, just all black. Very comfortable and are not too stiff to walk in. Because they're heavily vented, they ain't what you'd call waterproof, but I shot the living hell out of them with Kiwi CampDry and my feel stood dry in the bit of rain I saw on my big ride last year.

What I did find, was that I have to go up to a size 13 to get a pair that fitted.
Usually wear a size 11.
Asked for an eleven, toes rubbing on the front, tried a 12 and did the same, no extra socks.
Tried a 13, a bit loose, add a pair of thermal socks, fitted perfectly.
Good job they were not ordered online.

The write ups and ratings are all great and they are very reasonable. I'm pretty well set on getting them but looking for anyone to tell me a reason not to. Waterproof but breathable sounds pretty good to me.
All I've ever worn are Stewart (Tucson, Arizona) custom made horsehide cowboy boots. When a deer knocked me off the bike they took a pretty good slide and Stewart fixed them for free, and even picked up on and adjusted them for my foot, which they said they could tell had grown almost an entire size. They were only 15 years old at the time but felt like wearing bedroom slippers. Damn, maybe I'm talking myself into just staying with them?

| Posted : 16 Jun 2011 - 13:31 Post title : Re: icon - Field Armor Boots (Re: Eddie) | | I rode with Dr. Martens for years, but have moved towards more specialized boots now. I was a DEDICATED Dr. Marten wearer... until they stopped actually making them in the UK. My last surviving pair of UK Docs are actually my dress shoes... I keep 'em spit shine clean and they look brand new for an 11 year old pair of kicks.
FYI: I did my 1600+ miles of the Denver~Prescott~Denver run in my Sidi Discoverys and they were super-comfy for big rain boots. Yeah, your feet can warm up in rain boots, but not as bad as you think. Plus, I love having the support and protection they afford.
Oh, and here's my Icon Field Armor (Chukka size) boots... 2 seasons old, holding up well, more than 10K miles of riding on 'em. I'd say they are excellent hot weather riding boots... the venting lets in tons of air. Not waterproof, but I sprayed the hell out of them with Kiwi CampDry before my longer ride last year. My feet stayed dry in the 2 rains we ran into. Though, I think that wouldn't have been the case if we'd seen more and harder wet weather.

| Posted : 17 Jun 2011 - 07:20 Post title : Re: icon - Field Armor Boots (Re: Eddie) | | On 1 April 2003, under pressure from declining sales, the Dr. Martens company ceased all production in the United Kingdom,[3] with production moved to China and Thailand. With this change also came the end of the company's vegan-friendly non-leather products, which were produced since the early 1990s. The switch to Chinese and Thai production led to Solovair and Tredair boots gaining popularity amongst the punk and skinhead subcultures, as these boots are similar to Dr. Martens and continue to be manufactured in the United Kingdom. In 2007, Dr. Martens began producing footwear again in England, in the Cobbs Lane Factory in Wollaston. These products are part of the "Vintage" line, which the company advertises as being made to the original specs. |
