So, I'm a bit torn on jackets at the moment and realized that it's for a particularly stupid reason that I haven't pulled the trigger on what is arguably the best retro styled jacket on the market to day as confirmed by Motorcycle Classics Magazine (the BMG Montana shown below)

The basic construction and fit is exactly what I'm looking for and it gets high marks in most ever category. It's flexible enough for me to use it most of the year being both fully vented, armored and having a removable insulated liner.

The problem? It doesn't have a couple visual features I was looking for. Yes, silly but hell we all paid $15k + on a toy so don't be pointing fingers at me.... but by all accounts its a great jacket. Anyone have personal experience with the jacket? Thoughts?

Oh and here's one... anyone ever have any mods done to leather jackets (styling wise, not fit) I was hoping to have some contrasting striping on the jacket for both designs sake and for a bit of visibility. I just don't know if that's reasonable to do after the fact. (since the liner is in and so that it looks like it belongs and not an afterthought)

Thanks

It is a nice looking jacket.

I believe that tailors specializing in leather exist and can deal with the lining. There used to a be (might still be) a lady that would make just about anything out of leather in Saugatuck, MI. Find an upscale leather store in your town and ask them.

See if you can find an area with a high concentration of Vietnamese... there will always be a tailor among them and they'll work a bit faster and cheaper than most shops. I can just imagine what a custom leather shop charges in Germany!!!!

I know a bit about the topic, as in a past life I was the R&D engineer for a sports kite/parasail manufacturer and worked with and trained pro. sewers... most came from the clothing world.

To do the stripes you want and do it correctly, the liner will have to be completely removed first. While not a big deal, it is labor-intensive. I've got NO idea what the charge for that kind of labor would be in your area, but I'm guessing it won't be cheap!

But, here's an idea: If you DO find someone to do that sort of work on the jacket, you might get them to add a water-resistant/water-proof layer to the liner before reinstalling it... some sort of "Reissa" or GoreTex material that you can find online. Just a thought...

Either way, it's a good-looking jacket

Judging from the pics. I've seen you're pretty wooly and you would'nt need the liner anyway.

Well, I did a bit more looking and couldn't find a jacket that measured up technically to this one and had the exact look I was looking for so I went pricier and technically better instead of making a fashion decision. I'll sort the modifications later and if I am able to I'm able to and if I'm not, I'm not.

I'll give a report on the jacket itself once it comes in.

Well, I got the jacket in.... and damn is it a sweet jacket. VERY soft, VERY well constructed, SUPER nice leather and it smells like sex. Ok, not literary like sex, 'cause that would be a bit gross, but it has that incredible smell that only good leather has. The armor is particularly well placed and while you can feel it when you are sliding your arms in, it really disappears once the jacket is on. You can easily wear it anywhere off the bike with looking out of place. It's a sharp jacket.

We've had a dip in temperatures here lately so I haven't been able to test out the effectiveness of the venting yet, but I will soon. But, the best feature of all is...... (wait for it) ..... LONG ARMS! YES!! ... If you are anything like me (and God help you if you are) you are rather constantly dealing with motorcycle jackets that are made like fashion jackets, the sleeves look great when you are off the bike, but once you reach for the bars you've got arm capris. Well BMG seemed to have invested a lot in researching the fact that most riders while on a bike, reach in front of them for the bars, thus binding the shoulders up and making the sleeves too short. Through this research they seemed to have developed an ingenious way around this problem by, get this, adding longer sleeves. IT'S BRILLIANT. If only the rest of the manufacturers had the deep pockets BMG has to do this invaluable research. (and people thing there is no return on our space program).

I can't say yet how big of a season the jacket will handle but overall I am quite pleased with the jacket. Be forewarned that the jacket is a very dark brown not a black. It does look black until you put something black next to it, then it becomes rather clear it is not. Also the liner is a vest only liner. Not a bad thing, just a thing. So, in short, the Montana is a great jacket at a fair price. If you like it and you are in the market for one, don't hesitate to get one.

Well, let us know what you think when you get it in. I've been wearing it this winter as my go to jacket for just walking around. (bike is in bits right now so no riding for me) and I really enjoy it. Nice breast pocket placement as well, makes for easy phone access and it's just a good looking jacket.

Granted, there's only so much a jacket can do with the likes of me wearing it ... but here is a shot of me and the missus while I'm wearing the Montana. It shows the color well since she is wearing a black jacket.

I'm not quite as tall as you Thatch, but I'm 6'1", with very broad shoulders, and long arms as well. I feel your woes when it comes to finding jackets that have proper arm length. I tried the "montana" on at the IMS in Seattle last month, and it fit great! The arms were perfect. I will probably order one myself in the next couple weeks. Thanks for posting a pic so I can see the jacket in natural light. It looks great. Hope you get your bike up and going soon,

Chris

Well you know you're go to source for getting thing stateside there Ivan. If'n you need something you just have to yell.

Honestly, I have the original Triumph Hawk jacket which I think is the mutts, but as far as a jacket that does from bike to day out with the wife and back again, the Montana is it. I wore it tonight with the wife and family and other than the hostess mentioning how heavy it was when she hung it up, it was the perfect jacket for a night out.

Of course, having a yeti walk in for service might of had something to do with the reception.

Yes. Well, the shoulder and elbow is in. I took the back plate out. You really don't notice them at all except when putting it on. My Hawk jacket (which I really like) is a bit obnoxious to wear out as it is just so bulky, not the Montana

ugh... I don't know. I was supposed to get them today. Painter was finishing up on them and it was going to be good to go, then he tore a ligament in his knee, off for an MRI and who knows how long off ... Your guess is as good as mine at this point.

Glad to hear it. I don't want to have to disassemble the jacket everytime I go out without the bike.

And thats a bummer about the tins. Hopefully they are sitting in the shop finished and safe and sound. I'm excited to see them done.

Condition of marriage from nearly 18 years ago says 'no'. Wonder if the effect can linger that long?

More than likely that's just my "Having a nice time. What you want to take my picture? Damn it, fine go ahead and get it over with, I'll try and look pleased about it" face. I thought it more appropriate than my normal "Where the hell did all these kids come from and why am I always paying for everything?" face I normally have on.

Well, look at the bright side, as the kids age they can share their pot with you (not that I would know, mind you )

I did get my jacket, Thatch. I lost momentum on the post here, mostly because, against all odds, the sleeves were too long. It's all good though, I have a tailor that does my suits and, as luck would have it, can also handle leather. She shortened the sleeves by the 1/2" it took to get it to my thumb knuckle. Long enough to serve its purpose when stretched out to the bars, but short enough to avoid restricting my non-riding hand movement.

So, overall, SUPER pumped. The jacket's quality is as advertised. Feels good, looks good, and does indeed smell like sex. A hat tip to you, sir, for blazing the trail.

Jason

PS: Ummmm...Where the hell are these tins!?!?!
