| Posted : 19 Apr 2011 - 16:43 Post title : Motofizz Multi Tank/Tail Bag | | Well, don't hold me to this, but I THINK I've just bought my final piece of luggage for the June trip (unless something shiny distracts me )...
My new Motofizz Multi Bag... bought it from Aerostich ... All-Japanese-Made (Isn't it funny how a Japanese-Made product has now become synonymous with quality?)
As a note, some of you may remember that I swore off tank bags, but a few of my test rides revealed to me that I sure could find the right bag very handy. I've tried 2 previous tank bags...
1. Motocentric Mototrek 14 This was a really well-designed bag with a surprising amount of space and very well-built. It stood in place well, even at high-speeds. I just didn't like the way the mounting tabs/magnets were always bunching up and, even after one day's ride, I was seeing some tank scuffing. So, it went back to Fay Myers.
2. Kuryakyn GranCruise Bag What a total HUNK OF SHIT this tank bag is! In my opinion... avoid this POS like the plague! Too many problems to list, but the highlights are...
1. Magnets so weak the bag kept blowing into my crotch... even at speeds as low as 45mph. 2. PISS POOR built quality: loose threads all over, seams that looked like they were ready to blow out any minute, stupidly-designed "anti-scratch" cloth you are supposed to lay on the tank before you put on the bag that slides and blows all over the damned place! 3. Magnets/straps that did some pretty major scuffing to the tank that took me a few hours with some Mother's Scratch Remover to deal with.
So... like I said, I thought I was pretty much off of tank bags till I realized the benefit of having the RIGHT bag out-weighed the downsides. I started shopping again and ALMOST went back to my old Icon Urban before stumbling on to the Motofizz.
Yes, this bag is EXPENSIVE! WOW, is it! But, it had all the features I wanted...
1. Large Map Pocket (plus, the interior map/documents compartment opens like a book... very cool and VERY convienent!) 2. Adjustable magnet straps (they also tuck away totally into the bottom of the bag, but still offer some "stickum") 3. Bag length that's not so long it covers up my gauge 4. Tank pad and straps have a material less likely to cause too much scuffing (but, I've already accepted the fact this bike will get scuffs during my trip... I'm just gonna deal with it) 5. Expandable without being so bulky that it'll be in my way while riding 6. Easy-to-Use/Easy-to-Store Rain Cover
Plus, it's so convertible and versatile... you can separate the pieces to use the magnetic base as a stand-alone map case while using the rest of the bag as a tail bag (straps for this use are included)
All in all, I'm very happy with this new additional to my traveling luggage...

Dave!!!

Plus, I like having a bag in front of me for the things I like to have handy... like my cameras, chargers, paper maps (yep... I want paper AND my GPS!).
Again, what's cool about this tank bag is that is easily becomes a tail bag... just a few minutes attaching the straps to the pillion.

Agree with you 100% on the Kury bags. Stay away from them folks! They're shite. Zippers are absolute crap and overall low quality bags all around... Oh and by the way you're really starting to look prepared for your big trip! You must be looking forward to it!

As for the tank bag itself, I also did look araound for a while, but did not find anything. Most of them cover the instruments and that's definitively not what I want... As your pictures show, the instruments are covered quiet a bit. Especially when the bag ist packed.
One of my projects is to move the instruments to the handlebar, Rocket style. With that a tank bag may not be a problem anymore.

I use it on the right crankcase cover to stop my boot from scuffing the chrome.

I've been using back pack for several years but especially on longer day trips, my shoulders are killing me. Will pick up the the Traveller HD also for longer trips.
Bags-connection Reverse could be used as tank bag or tail bag with straps and it has 10 to 15 litres of capacity (expandable with zipper).

Leaving Denver sometime the first week of June and am heading to Birmingham, Alabama to visit the Barber Vintage Motorsports Musuem via Dodge City, KS and Tupelo, MS... my goal is to stay OFF the big super-slabs on this trip, so it's all back roads. My riding buddy from Rhode Island decided to ride down and meet me somewhere along the Blue Ridge Parkway, but I'll probably do some riding around Deals Gap and the surrounding area and then we'll both head back north along the BRP into Pennsylvania, skirt around north of NYC, into Connecticut, and Rhode Island, where I'll hang out with my family for a few days.
We'll then ride up into Maine, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia... eating as many lobsters along the way as I can!
Then, I'm hoping to follow the Canadian border into upstate New York, cross into Canada again in between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie (quick stop at Niagara Falls), cross back into the US north of Detroit, and head up into the U.P., cross the famous Mackinaw Bridge, back into Canada and ride around Lake Superior and Thunder Bay, back south into Minnesota, Wisconsin, and find some meandering route back to Denver. (The original plan was to ride straight across Canada and then come down into Washington, but I'll need to be back in Denver a bit earlier than planned)
I'll get some work done while my buddy does some sight-seeing and then we'll head to northern/central California via Salt Lake City, southern Idaho, northern Nevada with a goal of camping at Yosemite (never been there and have always wanted to see Half-Dome and El Capitan).
Then, it's back home to Denver and my riding partner will make his way back to RI solo.
At least, that's the tentative plan and subject to change and mood
