| Posted : 31 Mar 2011 - 14:48 Post title : 3M Scotchlite Reflective Adhesive ~ Cool Safety! | | So, as many of you know (and may be SICK of hearing about!), pretty much everything I've done to my bike this winter has been towards the singular goal of preparing for my 10,000 mile ride around the US and Canada this June.
My latest experiments have been, with the help of my brother and his vinyl sign shop, 3M Scotchlite Reflective Adhesive Film. The particular film/tape is black in color, so you can barely see it... until ANY light source hits it; then it shines BRIGHT like any reflective safety film/tape. Pretty cool stuff for adding a extra bit of visibility in low/poor light or at night.
See below some initial tests on my new Givi E21 side cases. You'll see my brother actually cut a few "Triumph" and "Thunderbird" logos. Each photo has a "no flash" then a "flash" version so you can see how the stickers look in normal light vs. with a focused light source...

Well, as I say, I'm experimenting right now with shapes, logos, etc. What's cool, is that you really don't see this stuff until a strong, focused light source (ie: headlights, flashlights, camera flashes) illuminates it.
From my brother's experience cutting and selling this stuff to his professional clients, text and other recognizable shapes attract more attention and are better at rousing distracted drivers out of their stupor.
I've now got a bit of reflectivity on the rear, front, and sides my helmet, some pretty reflective piping on my jacket and pants, a 1" x 6" strip of the 3M Scotchlite Black Vinyl on either side of my black radiator cover, and a pretty well-lit set of side bags (from both sides and the rear).
I just can't bare to do this big ride with one of those god-awful bright green HiViz vests, but wanted to do something to increase visibility during those early morning hours before the sun is completely up... and when some drivers have not yet had enough caffeine! Plus, it's just one more thing to help put my wife's mind a bit more at ease.
By the way, I've got spare set of alternate Triumph logos* in reflective black if anybody wants them... $5 bucks plus postage and they're yours!
*They are approx. 9 1/2" x 1 1/4" ~ the white on top is only the top release paper. The apparent "white line" around the interior text is "negative space"... meaning, there's NO material there. The outer line is NOT attached to the interior text... held in place by the rear and top release paper. To apply, simply peel back the REAR release paper so that the vinyl is still attached to the top release paper. Carefully apply to the surface, rub the vinyl into place with the top release paper still attached. Wait a few minutes for full adhesion, then carefully remove the top release paper.

i dont like the high viz vests either, luckily the triumph gear does have reflective strips, sadly not in the tbird logo i did read somewhere that dawn and dusk are the most dangerous times and if it helps wake the caged dopers up its got to be a plus and keeping the wife happier gotta be another bonus

Hey Marty,
It was great to meet you in person on Saturday... thanks for riding your 'Bird down to my hotel to meet up and I hope those reflective stickers work out for you.
As far as the Vermont Triumph Rally... it could be doable, just depends upon how long I take to ride from Denver to RI. Say, is there any info online about the rally?

Also a pleasure meeting you! Thanks for the effort in making the special delivery too. Yes, we have a site, and if you click the "link" under my signature you'll be brought there. It's the first weekend in June, Bennington, VT. It would be great to see you there.

That rally looks like it's gonna be fun. Unfortunately, I'm just not gonna be able to break free of the Denver area in time to make it there. But, I hope ya'll have a great time!

The 900 is a flip front with both p and j rating. Does yours have the blow up cheek and neck pads? . How does it handle wind noise?

My EXO-1000 has the flip-down tinted sun visor, the pump-up cheek/neck pads, and has the SNELL 2009 rating. Scorpion designed the 1000 as a long-distance touring helmet, so it's fairly light-weight and wind noise is minimal. I've worn this helmet for 8-9 hour days with no pressure headaches or any other helmet-related pain.
Take a look at the Revzilla video below... he goes over where it fits into the top, premium touring helmet lineup.

For anyone buying a flip front please note that it is against the law to ride with the front 'flipped up'. Unless you have a P & J rated helmet. Even the top helmet which I liked (schuberth c3) can not be open while riding - so if you see a police rider with one then let him know . The police have been warned about this and are fineing people for riding with it open.
The Scorpion 900 can be flipped for riding ,and also with the detached chin guard removed, can be worn as an open face with the clip on peak.
