Has anyone installed the Triumph floorboards with just the toe shifter, not the heel attachment?
Also when assembling brake side do you need to remove the brake master cylin der?

G'day mate, I removed the heal shifter on my one, I tried it for a day, hated it, and removed it. I now have a heap more room to move my foot.

When I fitted mine, I just couldn't be "stuffed" removing the master cylinder and having to bleed the brakes. I managed to fit the boards without disconnecting the master cylinder. It makes it a lot more fiddly and I guarantee you will swear at least three times!!
I would do the same thing again even knowing this.

The main thing to be careful of is the solid brake line, this will have to be "manipulated" so be careful not to kink it.

The whole job. left and right, took me around 45 minutes and that was going real slow!!

Don't forget the brake pedal return spring!!

Good luck.

Much more room without the heel shifter, can go from stretched out cruiser to almost rear sets, great on a long run. no need to split the hydraulics.

Don't like heel shift and floorboards. But, my ditto is about knowing when you can carefully ignore the Triumph instructions.
I read them, then read again to see what I can artfully skip.

I saved hours with the fog lamps by not taking the front wheel, brakes, mudguard off, then back on.

Now, I had to carefully slip the fork tubes down to re-position the turn signal lights. I jack up the bike and
lowered down the front forks assembly using another jack. I controlled the angle problem with the front brakes.
Allowing the wheel to rotate or not.

Hairy, but it worked. Set up is key as always.

I love the heel/toe shifter. I tried just the toe for the first few hours I had the bike, but now I would never go back.

I put these on mine.

I had to do a fair amount of fab work on the mounts to make them level, though.

They are a little higher and result in a little more cornering clearance. The higher leg position changes the weight distribution on your butt, which could be good or bad depending on your perspective.

I too love the heel shifter, but have a dilemma. Shoe size is 15 EE, so need the real estate for room. Solution, leave the heel shifter ON in town driving, and remove it for long trips. Also, the Triumph footboards are on the small side, compared to some other bikes. I never had a toe/heel shifter and find it is easier to shift smoothly than with the toe shifter. Not everyone shares that view, but some of us like the heel shifter, even Big Foot here.

thanks guys for the feedback..that's why I wanted more info as some seem to think the Triumph boards are too small as well as being very $$$. Anyone else use some thing other than Triumph for the boards??

The Triumph boards are huge! You wouldn't want them any bigger or they may act as wings and lift the bike off the road at high speeds!

I picked up a cheapish set off eBay. Here's a laugh. The dealer sold them because his customer didn't like them after only 70 miles. Tell you what, with the way they installed it, I would have given up on them too!

Note to those installing them: There are four plastic bushes for each floorboard. You should NOT install all four bushes into the floorboard plate. You install TWO in there, and the other two in the black floorboard mounts.

If you don't have two bushes in the floorboard mounts, you will have a really wobbly, loose, uncomfortable rattly floorboards that will not inspire confidence, and then you will sell them cheap on eBay!

Out of interest, I am running without the heel shifter. Had a bad experience with those on another bike. Damn thing caught my pants as I was coming to a stop. Nearly dropped the bike!!!

If you think the TBird boards are small, get on a Rocket next time you're at the dealer. It's impossible to get your entire boot on the left board because it is so short and the space between the heel and toe shifter is so small. After having that setup I love the Thunderbird boards.

Gonzo....when you leave off the heel shifter do you need to put something else in place(shim?) or does it go together without the piece?

thanks!

Just finished installing the boards last night, so sorry for delay.

You can certainly install it fine wout the heel shifter. That is an add-on that attaches to the toe shifter arm, which is the main arm that is connected to the shifter linkage and all the rest.

Only question I have to others, if they too have left off the heel shifter, is what did they do with the splined pin that the heel shifter goes onto? I mean, it *looks* like that pin is something I should be able to knock out of the toe shift arm, but buggered if I can make it budge.

So, at present, I have the rather naff looking splined pin on the end of the shifter arm. Might have to buy a chrom bolt cover or such to hide it. That might do the trick.

Anyone got a source for something like that. Looks like the pin is about a 12mm diameter or so.

I've done some other mods to both the shifter arm and to the brake pedal on the other side, which IMHO looks like something off a friggin TRACTOR! I've seen smaller brake pedals on industrial mining machinery, for heavens sake! (Yep, another episode of "Triumph Designers" in the works. |lol>)

Thanks,
Gonzo

Hey Kando,

Here are some pics of my floorboard install (with a twist):

On the left hand side, I had not installed the heel shifter as I think they restrict movement and can be downright dangerous if they catch your trousers when you are coming to a stop! I've also removed the stock shifter peg and installed a Kuryakyn Pilot shift peg. Pretty easy to do, just need to drill out the threads in the shifter arm with an 8.5mm drill bit. However, it did stip a little of the chrome, which I touched up with some clear nail polish to stop it corroding further. Hopefully should be OK.

On the right hand side, it was a different story. I had to do some major cutting, welding, grinding and smoothing to get this result, which is still not finished as I will need to get it re-chromed.

Why did I do it? Well, it's another one of those "Triumpg Designers" episodes where the guy that designed the brake pedal used to work for John Deer... I mean fair dinkum, I've seen smaller brake pedals on Mount Isa mining equipment!!! Harley brake pedals are less agricultural than ours!!!

So, I cut, shut and welded it up to accept a Pilot brake pedal cover from my favourite 3rd party accessory company, Kury. All comes together well with my Pilot highway pegs and ISO Wings for the lady. Love it. :)

BUT! In yet another episode of "Triumph Designers", I can report that the scraper plates on the floorboard almost COMPLETELY miss the mark! Will post up photos, soon. :)

Gonzo,
Thanks for the follow up they look great too bad there was so much extra to do to get em right. You'd think Kury and other would be putting out some accessories that fit the TBird by now.

great job!!
