I had "Mothers" car care products available to me to carry so I decided to test them, specifically the Billet Aluminum Polish. The Thunderbird's triple tree looks great out the door of the dealer but the rain and the months since have ridden it made it look like crap. I started wondering what would be a good low effort polish and since Mothers was available and I have been happy with their carnauba wax, decided to give it a go.

I was amazed! This stuff is incredible. Without any hard rubbing, just light application this stuff made the triple tree glean like chrome! Spendy for a little 4 oz. jar, but it takes very little, just a dab of it and I expect it would last a long time. This is different than their "Mag & Aluminum Polish", labeling says specifically for "billet, forged and finely cast aluminum, brass and other polishable metals the absolute finest finish available-guaranteed."

Also tested their Chrome Polish. Not abrasive like Turtle Wax Polish so I am not sure how it would do on rusty surfaces but on clean chrome, not sure how but it really makes it shine.

Sounds good Eddy! Now to ask the obvious question: will it get the oxidation spots out of the wheels?? The Mother's Mag & Aluminum Polish is not very good at that. I've used a drill powered polisher and hours of elbow grease, all to no avail. I'd pay serious $ for a polish that'll do that!

Not likely to die of natural causes. At least I hope not.

I use that on the triple tree too. I also use thier mag and aluminum or blue magic brand. Any will do, thos the billet is a finer cut and i use that as a final after using the mag& alum or blue magic to get the heavy scratches out. Also, try one of those Peak brand SPA polishing towels at pep boys i spoke about. Ut will remove even more of the scratches. You will notice as much better as it looks, you will still see a lot of scratches in the right light. The better products you use the less that will be. You can even use nitrile rubber gloves which will yield even smoother results. But all in all i find the clamp just too scratchy even with the polishing, so i think for about $140 i will eventually go with the chrome upper clamp.

The chrome polish does nothing really. It doesn't polish chrome first of all. You can't polish chrome. All you can do is clean it and make it looked deeper and less scratchy. For that try wax and then that liquid performance spray i've mentioned many times. The wax will deepen it then the LP will deepen it further and hide finer scratches to some degree. Not remove them, but hide them a bit.

By the way, engage was kind enough to send me some stuff called opti seal which is a paint sealant. It's expensive but looks really good and protects better than any wax or anything i've used. You apply it just by wiping it on then it takes 24 hours to cure. At that point i wax over it then finish off with LP and when i'm done it looks like a better paint job and very smooth and scratch free. But the best pary is weeks later you can wipe it down quicly with any detailer and it looks like it did when you first applied it. Very very good longevity. I would highly recommend this stuff, especially for those with black paint. $24 a bottle for 8 oz, but that will last years. you can do the whole tank with one or two sprays onto a applicator.

No, the billet is even FINER cut than mag and aluminum, so it will be worse at the wheels. Thats a tough one. I have used all 3 i mentioned and none worked well on the wheels. You will need a much coarser compound. Try rubbing compound. that should do a great job ad be far far easier as elbow grease goes.

By the way, i have only had a couple small tough spots like that, so i know what you're talking about but i never tried rubbing compound on them because i haven't needed to. But next time i get one of those spots i will get some. I've used it on tough metal stains before and it worked well. Tho it does depend on how deep the corrosion. But i got mine out with the mothers and blue magi and a lot of elbow grease, so rubbing compound will only be easier. How much is had to say, but it will be easier.

hey ed
if you can try it against the belgom alu and belgom chrome polish. i presently use the chrome polish for the alu and it works brill. uses a chemical reaction to lift the layers off and leaves a wax residue for protection. busters have it but cheaper at thepolishcompany

my alu is kept in good nick so i dont have the oxidisation probs. however my brother has real probs with his speedy wheels and after removing the laquer we used solvol applied with fine wire wool to gently work out the white spider legs. then applied mer to give it summer protection, 365 suggested for the winter.
